Whether is was the $20,000 grant to build a replica of the Great Wall of China in Bedford, Ind., the multimillion-dollar study on drunken fish and rats, or the $107,000 devoted to studying the sex life of quail, the government and private groups find a lot of silly ways to spend money.
So when I read that the Kellogg Foundation was awarding $75 million over five years to undo the effects of racism on children in poor communities, I cheered the efforts of the Michigan-based nonprofit.
Through the "America Healing" initiative, nearly $15 million will be doled out to 119 neighborhoods in 20 states and Washington, D.C., to help document and alleviate the problems of black and brown children dealing with the problems of racism.
I can already hear the nonsense conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and others will spew over the grants. To them, racism is something that exists only in the warped heads of minorities looking for handouts. For them, racial discrimination in this country, if it ever really existed, ended in 1865 when the last slaves were freed in the United States.
Thankfully, the folks at Kellogg don't care about advancing the agendas of conservatives and instead are looking at how racism affects children today.
Is it a coincidence that black and brown kids are overrepresented in just about every negative statistic in the country, ranging from poverty rates, unemployment, dropout rates and incarceration levels?
No doubt, black people have to take responsibility for the problems in the black community. If we want to address the issues in the best manner, though, wouldn't it be good to know some of the root factors and causes behind the numbers?
Even though it is private money that Kellogg is handing out, I hope it is careful about where the funding goes.
While the grant has great potential for teaching us how racism hobbles minority children, it also has the potential of being exploited by poverty pimps more interested in writing a slick grant proposal and collecting a few bucks.
Even if a few dollars are wasted along the way, it is a noble move by Kellogg.
What is more worthy of study, American racism or the love life of quail?

Mmmmm, why are all these white people angry with Kellogg's over a grant? Stupid is as stupid does.
I'm the mom of two young children. Guess what, I still cry at night thinking that my children are going to have to grow up in this messed up world. These days I don't feel safe with my children out anywhere, from blacks or whites or other.
Why, because everyone of all colors are so consumed with the hate and anger they think they're justified to feel. Hate makes for stupid, dangerous and ugly acts.
As a human living on this planet watching, learning and seeing just how low we all are in each other's estimation is sicking.
I'm disgusted by some of the stupid mindless and truely hateful comments I've read from whites on this subject on this board.
Listen up all you back bitting hating people of all colors, if you haven't yet noticed this whole(that's the white world, the black world, the brown world and whatever shade you want to fill in the blank with)is in big trouble and it's only going to get worst, not better.
The time will come and it's not far away, where the people of this world better work together to try and stop it. Or none and I do mean none of us will make it at all.
God help us.

After a while of hearing minorities constantly play the victim it becomes tiring. No money should be spent on studying racism in America. I also find it quite impressive that the great majority of black people(such as the author) have Rush Limbaugh classified as a racist. Since you guys disagree with his opinions he is a racist? is that the name of the game. Unlike most blacks, Rush has the best interest of America at heart

Wrong, Rush has his "own best interests at heart", he doesn't give a damn about you either. Remember that!

Racism is so ugly and awful. Black America has come a very long way. Unfortunately, racism will probably always exist in some form. People just need to see that we are all human, nobody asked to be born the race or nationality that we are. Everyone needs to try showing some LOVE to one another!

I hope they stop by the home of Tom Davey. He's on Facebook. This moron blamed President Obama for MTV/VH1 to gay people and teens getting pregnant. I'm not lying. I have the racist rants to prove it. He hurls he n-word around even called the President on. Accused me of liking it rough because I supported the healthcare bill. It gets so much worse. And why? Because he thinks that it's President Obama's fault that the 8 and 9 yr olds were gyrating like they were making money and I told him that he was laying the blame in he wrong place. And his pic...omg...talk about a true racist.

It is true that perceived racism hobbles minority children. Clearly, we blacks are as intelligent, ambitious and competent as any other race, yet we continue to tell our children that they cannot succeed without government intervention. That doesn't empower children. That breeds a sense of entitlement and insecurities, as these children become convinced that they can't make it on their own. This is a bunch of hogwash, which Kellogg has done simply to make themselves look more compassionate. If they gave a damn about kids, they would put that money towards educating all children or creating programs that would allow kids to compete for education scholarships. Or they could toss that money into helping single moms better make ends meet by cleaning up parks or offering after school care for kids.
