Whether is was the $20,000 grant to build a replica of the Great Wall of China in Bedford, Ind., the multimillion-dollar study on drunken fish and rats, or the $107,000 devoted to studying the sex life of quail, the government and private groups find a lot of silly ways to spend money.
So when I read that the Kellogg Foundation was awarding $75 million over five years to undo the effects of racism on children in poor communities, I cheered the efforts of the Michigan-based nonprofit.
Through the "America Healing" initiative, nearly $15 million will be doled out to 119 neighborhoods in 20 states and Washington, D.C., to help document and alleviate the problems of black and brown children dealing with the problems of racism.
I can already hear the nonsense conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and others will spew over the grants. To them, racism is something that exists only in the warped heads of minorities looking for handouts. For them, racial discrimination in this country, if it ever really existed, ended in 1865 when the last slaves were freed in the United States.
Thankfully, the folks at Kellogg don't care about advancing the agendas of conservatives and instead are looking at how racism affects children today.
Is it a coincidence that black and brown kids are overrepresented in just about every negative statistic in the country, ranging from poverty rates, unemployment, dropout rates and incarceration levels?
No doubt, black people have to take responsibility for the problems in the black community. If we want to address the issues in the best manner, though, wouldn't it be good to know some of the root factors and causes behind the numbers?
Even though it is private money that Kellogg is handing out, I hope it is careful about where the funding goes.
While the grant has great potential for teaching us how racism hobbles minority children, it also has the potential of being exploited by poverty pimps more interested in writing a slick grant proposal and collecting a few bucks.
Even if a few dollars are wasted along the way, it is a noble move by Kellogg.
What is more worthy of study, American racism or the love life of quail?

Jamesnpost your one sick RACIST mf!!!!SICKENING!!!! Look MF take your sick frat boy ass off this site!!!!!! As a matter of fact most of the comments made by whites regarding this article have been stupid and or racist. I swear the more I read the posts on the news websites it's clear to me that there's no hope for the end of racism in this country or the world. Most white people are so full of hate against Black people. But most of you don't have the courage to say it too our faces, You hide behind web sites, talk shows and jokes. Or scream reverse discrimination or racial preference when we call your asses out! Scary we have to deal with your sick asses as our employers, teachers, physicans, law enforcement, military etc. It's a testimony of our strength that we have survived. Black people HAVE TO BE STRONG to battle with this kind of EVIL!!!!

I like the idea of this initiative, but it's hard to judge, since the article is quite vague on just what the money will be going toward.

Desperation.. Kellogg's trying to raise the price of their stock by supposedly promoting anti-racism in their advertising. Time to enforce celibacy in advertisers. We have to stop them from reproducing NOW !!

You CANNOT, repeat CANNOT, throw money at something and expect it to change attitudes. Respect is earned, not bought, not legislated. It is perfectly normal for people of different races to be wary of each other. The most racist folks I know are anything other than white. Also, thanks to the media for continually whipping up feelings of victimazation in this land where opportunity is still open to anyone.

Some of the comments on here are exactly why we need privatized funding for this very reason. I hope many will find it therapetic. I am white and grew up in a very small minded community and was taught many bad narrow minded ideals. Thank God I met some really amazing group of diverse friends in college who enlightened me. Clearly many of you who have commented are white people who have never walked into a classroom or boardroom and been the only white person in the room. Yet this happens to people of other races in the US all the time. Clearly you have never asked yourself why McDonalds commercials with only black people on them are only shown at 2 am. Open your minds people...Im just sayin...
