The mayor of Jena, La., says a new song by John Mellencamp called "Jena (Take Your Nooses Down)" is "inflammatory, defamatory" and crosses the line."The town of Jena has for months been mischaracterized in the media and portrayed as the epicenter of hatred, racism and a place where justice is denied," Jena Mayor Murphy R. McMillin said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.
Mellencamp says in a note posted on his Web site that the song tells a story.
"The song is not written as an indictment of the people of Jena but, rather, as a condemnation of racism," he says. "The current trial in Jena is just another reflection of prejudice in our nation." Mellencamp adds that the song is intended to catalyze thought.
Last week, the Jena Town Council voted to create an interracial committee to address racial relations in the town.

From the John Cougar Mellencamp song "Our Country." For those of you dumb enough to make the statement that he is just trying to be an inflammatory infulence Jena Louisiana.
He is trying to inflame the hearts and minds of America and he has done a pretty good job of it for well over twenty years.
This song "Our Country" is at least ten years old. He is very true to his craft and is not some fly by night golddigger.
Expect to hear more from him. He is a great artist.

There were a lot of "white" people at Jena 6 marching for the cause of equal justice, but this is the first blog where I have read credit given. In many blogs it's "white people, white folks" as a group, but not all white folks are racists, and not all white folks are haters. My family has white, black, and red (Indian), so we grew up "color blind." We have experienced injustice, but because we were raised color blind, we just get on with life and haven't experienced as much injustice as some. After Jena 6 it's been a little different. We've had some bad comments made about our multi-cultural family and it hurts, especially when it comes from my own race. I agree with y'all that we must march together for change, because we are all in this together with the exception of some who still live in the past...in all colors.

I agree with your statement "Racist America admit to themselves that racism is alive and well and began to erase it." This "Racist America" includes all races. Remember that Jena 6 is about an unjust legal system, not about the color of skin. If everyone would remember that, we might be able to move forward with positive change.

John is bringing out what is needed the hatred and injustice that will continue to exist unless we make some deep changes for ourselves.
It's a step for positive change that one can think on, and do it as the most high states; the truth being revealed...but without repercussion it will continue.

has anyone ever heard the saying "united we stand, divided we fall".. has anyone every sat and really got into the meat of what that means.... african americans needs to stop back biting each other and come together... with the talent that most black americans have.. we can move so many white mountains.. it would be unreal....
but the thing that i see.. is that "every man is for himself".. it is crazy and when is it going to come time for us to become one.. and
MOVE THESE WHITE MOUNTAINS....
they see that black americans are weak ... the KKK said that they dont have to kill us.. that we are killing ourselves... doesnt anyone understand that they are sitting and laughing at us.... because some of us are JOKES.... we kiss white behind to help us to get by...
