Don't let anyone say that African-Americans don't give back. In fact, more and more historically Black Colleges and Universities are finding that they can tap their alum for gifts to their alma maters.According to USA Today, Calvin Tyler wrote a check to Morgan University to the tune of a $1 million this year. Morgan, like other publically financed black schools, is faced with shrinking budgets.
Baby boomers who have prospered in the post-Civil Rights era say they are comfortable enough and their families taken care of, so they want to help others.
And black colleges, realizing the weath in their communities, as other colleges have, are encouraging them to remember their schools in life insurance policies and in their estate planning.
"Most of the public HBCU's (historically black colleges and universities) are just embarking on fund-raising, and in most cases, we really have to educate our alumni because in the past, say, 10 years ago, they really weren't solicited on a regular basis," Cheryl Hitchcock, vice president of institutional advancement at Baltimore's Morgan State said in USA Today.

Great article. We are at an important time for our HBCU's history. We hope that all those who know children will begin introducing HBCUs early vs. later!

Oh, this is so wonderful to hear!! What an importance cause to support. It's sad that when a topic is as serious as this, no one's on the site. I suppose it's just too positive to be entertaining, huh.

As a Graduate of an HBCU and a professional fundraiser I am very happy to hear that the giving back to our schools has increased! And not just from the folks who have become very wealthy..ie Willie Garry to Shaw and Earl Graves to Morgan State!

I think it is wonderful that alumni are giving back. I did not graduate from an HBCU, but my hope was that my 3 children would. However, my daughter went to Tougaloo in Mississippi for one semester and the conditions were deplorable. My first thought was, if they graduate such a large percentage of the state's professionals, why aren't they giving back. My 2 sons are graduating this year and I am not pushing them to attend an HBCU after what we experienced with my daughter.

I am a proud graduate of Tougaloo College. I did not attend the college for the buildings. I went there for what they had to offer and the offerings were too numerous to count. Sorry about your daughter's experience. She missed out on a most rewarding experience.

Giving back also means giving time, contacts, positive promotion, and other valuable resources that will sustain the quality and excellence of the HBCU. HBCU's will be continually important as people of color receive one-to-one training without regard to race or creed and become successful, self sustaining members of society. Yet, HBCU's must provide excellence in leadership, instill pride and demonstrate man's humanity to man in caring and nurturing environments.

Way to go, something positive to read about and comment about. One of the biggest regrets I have in life, is that I didn't attend a HBCU. There were plenty to chose from in my area, Virginia Union U., Hampton U., Virginia State U. Norfolk State U and last but certainly not least Howard U. What a rich tradition to grow up around and not participate in....my loss big time.....

that is wonderful that he is giving to a HBCU. Being that I attend a HBCU,Florida A&M University(FAMU) myself, i feel that the alumni should give back to the school that gave them their start. And if there are any alumni from FAMU that should happen to read this comment, know that your school needs your support now more than ever.
