Recently, proposals to ban baggy pants have been brought up in several cities, from Trenton, N.J. to Louisiana. And legislation exists in some towns that could mean fines or even jail time if you bust a sag.Laws are still pending in Dallas and Atlanta, but laws have already been passed in several other Georgia and Louisiana cities. Some places, including Virgina, have tried to pass laws banning saggy pants and been ridiculed and laughed at.
In the small Louisiana town of Delcambre, a glimpse of boxers or the bare buttocks can lead to a $500 fine and six months in jail. According to the AP, in Atlanta, a law has been introduced to ban sagging and punishment could include small fines or community work -- but no jail time.
Is this America? And what about freedom of speech? Instead targeting people for wearing cloths that they associate with a delinquent activity, maybe these activists and politicians should focus on the actual issues that are much bigger than baggy pants.
The NAACP's stance is simple, these laws are lame and offensive.
"I think to criminalize how a person wears their clothing is more offensive than what the remedy is trying to do," said former NAACP director Dr. Benjamin Chavis.
The American Civil Liberties Union clearly sees this as a case of racial profiling.
"It's going to target African-American male youths. There's a fear with people associating the way you dress with crimes being committed," Benetta Standly, statewide organizer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, told the AP.
So what are the arguments in support of this? Some school teachers say it's a fashion distraction, others say it's sloppy and letting our kids dress like this has consequences.

I was told by a man who spent many years in prison that the sagging pants trend started in prison, and it was a sign that you had been punked. If this is true I dont know why anyone would want to wear their pants in this manner !!!

Being that I am a outspoken member of todays youth i feel that its only right that I post my opinion!!I for one do not applaud the whole sagging pants thing but at the same time I do not feel that it is fair that we (and I say we as a whole) are trying to tell others how to dress (among oter things) After all this is AMERICA!! Its like the more the years pass by the more we are constantly trying to cotrol everything and everyone!!! It's just a style thats like telling those who dress gothic that their style is banned too!!

personally i think its a good thing that they started the law but i dont think their going to enforce it for every race. they may just continue locking the blacks up but not the other races becuase they figure the blacks started this sagging pants law.

It comes down to this. No one wants to see someones butt cheeks through their underwear when out in public. I know I don't. It is indecent exposure. It's like letting a female go around in public with a wet white t-shirt so her nipples can show. Its not about how you are dressing but what you are showing. Can you go out in public in only your underwear? No. Should you be able to show almost your entire butt in your underwear with your pants so low that it shows? No. I see people do it around my neighborhood and it is extremely offensive. They might as well be walking around in only their underwear. What will we allow next as a society? Who knows at this rate.

Wait it just isn't black kids doin the baggy thing it's all race's there not targeting black's only this law is about baggy pant's no matter who wear's them I'm white and see plenty of other races wearing there pant's baggy this is not cool but disrespectful to all I'm glad to see that people care but as Barack Obama has said we don't want to see your underwear the law is indescent exposure and that is what all the kids do weather we care to admite it or not it is a law and if they get caught breaking it so be it. Myself i would love it if the world didn't revolve around racism of any kind but we all know that as long as that is alive there will always be dumb laws bein made to waste time in our system so to me if we all work on the world a little at a time we can change it and i think Barack Obama is a good change for our country thanks john

i think that we should be aloud to sagg our pants, its are right! just like telling someone to F off, or giving someone the finger... i mean thats like saying girls cant where miny skirts anymore, or guys have to where a shirt everywhere they go, its stuped. maybe if the parents now days see if they just let there kids just try thing like letting them where what they want, insted of being scard. the kids start to get sick of it. i no because i have been there. i listened to rap alot in my day, i have seen it all and honestly it gets old, but if the parents keep pushing there kids away from these things out there when they get older there just goin to want to crave it, but ur probley think i didnt so why would my kids well to be honest with you more things are goin on now than when you were kids. things are easyer to get a hold of like drugs, if parents keep shelding there kids away from the real world when its comes around like drugs or anything they wont no what to do. so maybe they should get a tast of the real world, so they no what to do or to suspect. parents think sagging pants are so bad and they hate seeing it well what do you think there thinkin about you?? honestly how would you like it if your kids said one day that you cant where something you like and you where it everyday, its just not right.

I FULLY ENCOURAGE this type of behavior amongst youths. It helps to solidify the knowledge that someone will be a 45 year old loser working at a fast food restaurant when my son swings by in his corvette to grab a burger. GOD BLESS the toughest thug in the hood. Had I never got my own head out my ass, (and cut my waist length hair)I'd never have been able to study hard and to take advantage of the opportunities that now allow me to live a VERY COMFORTABLE life. Did I "sell out to the man"? Hell no!! Ask my wife, kids, friends, and some of my many employees. I AM DA' MAN!!! The HARDER you make it on YOURSELF, THE EASIER it comes to ME!!!

It's not a fashion statement, it's a cry for help. I like them wearing their pants down low because they can't run as fast and you can see trouble coming a mile away. Nothing good happens for them when they drop their pants? I'm wrong...maybe they will get a quick Clinton if the right girl comes along. You know how we do? Pull up ya pants and do the walk away. Lean back.

personally i think its a black thing. No one complains when the white kids walk around with painted white faces, green hair, and dog leashes around their necks, but saggy jeans is an issue. Come on, if the ghetto children need fashion tips just make sure it's passed on to the trailor park kids as well.
