Look, I already know dozens of you are going to try to tear me a new one for this post, so I'm ready for the negative backlash, the accusations, the curses and the declarations that I'm going to hell.
That's cool. Not the first time, won't be the last.
Anyway, this wire story about gays in Jamaica coming under attack freaks me out. I mean, it is 2008, right? Not that I'm dissing Jamaica, but since when does a modern republic turn a blind eye to an egregious hate crime, like the murder of a human being for being a homosexual.
In fact, since when does a modern republic keep a law on its books that says it is illegal to be gay?
But we're looking at a culture where some of the most popular dancehall artists, like Buju Banton and Elephant Man write vehemently anti-gay lyrics, where gay activists are murdered for speaking their minds, and where even police will join a gay hate crime.
So the call has gone out for Jamaican authorities to protect gays and lesbians from such violence, but activists and the gay community itself on the island fear that their call will not be heard because of an overwhelming homophobic sentiment. In fact, despite 68 percent of all HIV/AIDS transmissions occurring between straight sex partners in Jamaica, a majority still blame the disease on homosexuals.
The activist group Human Rights Watch in late January released a report called "Jamaica: Hated to Death" which categorizes the violence and discrimination that has traditionally victimized gay people there. It's really unimaginable to think that you live in a country where at the whim of a a self-righteous mob you can be killed, like the victims in the report, just on suspicion. It's not really that far a throw from the Salem Witch Trials.
In fact, to tell you the truth, violent homophobia is more extreme in some places than others depending on where you go, but throughout the black world, it's pretty safe to say it is a norm, and a pointless one at that. People use the Bible to justify hatred for gays and lesbians, calling it an "abomination" (Leviticus 18:22).
However, at the same time, so is eating any seafood that doesn't have scales (Leviticus 11:10); and apparently God also doesn't dig getting tattoed (Leviticus. 19:28); shaving (Leviticus. 19:27); or vegetable gardens (Leviticus 19:19). The Holy Scriptures even tell you to kill yourself for overeating (Proverbs 23:2).
And if you want to be really literal about it, the verse from the Bible says: "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." So technically speaking, lesbians should be off the hook.
Okay, listen ... I know about half of you reading this are pissed off, and the other half are praying that lightning struck me the second I finished writing this. But this isn't about offending the religious. It's just that personally I'm big on another Biblical passage which I think is far more important:
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (John 13:34).
No I'm not a Bible thumper by any stretch, but if I would ever cite the Bible as philosophy, then a commandment of love for my fellow human beings would trump anything referring to gay sex, getting tatted up, or eating at Red Lobster.
So Jamaica, where we Bob Marley taught us "One Love," where Peter Tosh called for "Equal Rights" and where we understand we must utilize "all de herbs of de herth," show the rest of the world that you practice what you preach.

As a Jamaican, I have to say that I agree with the content of this article. I am ashamed of my own people for being so ignorant nd narrow-minded. Even if God says that homosexuality is wrong, it's not up to us as humans, especially not one specific group of people, to judge anyone because of who they choose to love. That's God's right and his ONLY. I am a Christian , and yet I would never hate someone or dump them as a friend just because they're gay.

Marknyc common knowledge would tell you that you can't own another HUMAN BEING = HUMAN RIGHTS. Human Rights is a GOD giving right. Banging your buddy in the butt is not a GOD giving right. IT A FILTHY PERVERTED DESIRE AND ONLY A RETARD WOULD WANT TO PLAY IN SOMEONE'S BUTT. Earl if you were a true christian, then you would know that homosexuality is a sin (GOD'S LAW). YOUR STATEMENT " TO JUDGE ANYONE BECAUSE OF WHO THEY CHOOSE TO LOVE. THAT'S GOD'S RIGHT AND GOD'S RIGHT ONLY" IS ANOTHER RETARDED HOMO COMMENT. YOU ARE SAYING THAT WE SHOULDN'T JUDGE YOUR PARTNER IN CRIME THE CHILD MOLESTER. YOU ARE ALSO SAYING THAT HE HAS THE RIGHT TO LOVE LITTLE CHILDREN SICK, SICK EARL. EARL READ YOUR BIBLE ROMAN'S CHAPTER 1.

Much love to you and to all reading this. There is another war being fought here. It is a spiritual battle for our souls. The bible gives us over 600 laws or commandments; the 10 commandments are a summary of those. Learn all of them NOW!! They are direct instruction from your Heavenly Father to save 'yo black a__' from the trap that the enemy has set for you!!! Pray for inspiration, divine guidance, before reading the scriptures. For misinterpreting can be fatal "As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood... wrest as they do also the other scriptures unto their own destruction"2Pet 3:16. For example, Prov 23:2 does not say "kill yourself for overeating", it says if you are prone to overeating,(or 'you know you like to pig out') and you are sitting before 'rulers', "put a knife at thy throat, don't let it happen..." so you CAN'T overeat,(always read the sentences just above and below for greater clarificaiton; you will see that this is not to be taken literally) in other words(Nor do I in any way advocate violence against any group of people). Neither does Yah have a problem with vegetable gardens (Lev 19:19 means don't let unlike animals, cows with horses, mate, dont' intermingle fruit or veg seeds, like apple pears and some of the other "new mixed seed fruit" you see at the grocery stores). It is the truth that will make us free. It is best to get at the truth in scripture no matter what the subject matter or how close it hits to home; there is good reason not to eat fish that don't have fins and scales, there is good reason not to get tatoos, shave the corners of your beards, lie with males as you lie with women, wear mixed woven garments or eat man-made fruits. Using all herbs IS good unless it goes against the law of the land, "render unto Cesar that which is Cesar's...." What Yah says in scripture, all of it, old and new, is for the good of HIS children. Homosexuality, gluttony, lust, are spirits of error no matter how good it looks, feels, smells or tastes. They are NOT for your own good. Remember, the enemy DECEIVED Eve in the garden over what seemed like eating a harmless peice of fruit. The enemy, satan, simply told Eve that what Yah said was not fair or sensible or true. It worked then and it would still work now if it had not been for Yah. "If it were possible he would deceive ther very elect". Yah said the greatest commandment is to love; How do you know when you love Him? "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandmenst are not grievous." I John 5:2,3.

Puerto Rican gay guy here with a black boyfriend. We would never entertain the idea of going to Jamaica. Lots of horror stories about the disrespect that gays recieve there. We'd rather spend our beautiful green money on a vacation where money talks and bullshit walks. Let the Jamaicans keep their heads in the sand over being prejudice against gay people. Our God is not a vengeful one, maybe they think theirs is. Who cares???

I think that this was a great article. Most of us ("us" being all conscious citizens of the world) need to work on accepting each other. Homosexuality is not a mental illness and homosexuals did not create the AIDS virus; it is simply an aspect of nature. Love is beautiful, whether it be heterosexual love or otherwise.

God welcomes all, and please don't try to use the Bible to justify bashing gays. Remember that many people use the Bible to justify slavery.

There is no excuse for attacking someone just because they are gay. I dispise homosexuality and consider it a sin against God but that doesn't mean I hate or dislike homosexuals. The Bible teaches us to hate the sin but love the sinner. Both my nephew, neice and surrogate daughter are gay. I hate their lifestyle but love them. You can love someone while still hating what they do.

If talking about biblical commandments and events, "thou shall not kill" is a commandment yet people kill or be killed everday. It is wrong to kill and no-one has a right to take someone's life no matter how different that person may be. Sodom and Gomorrah destruction was God's doing not mans. Man cannot heal man hence Jesus having to come and cleanse. He brought a new teaching that we should love one another, forgive one another - we are all have come short of the glory. So who of us can judge another?
God be the judge, the teacher, the healer, the instructor and deliverer for all.
Now Jamaica is a beautiful place. Some people do hold like most a religious conscious but not all are subject to it. Singers can sing all they want about gays and still show no respect for the woman in their songs.
As far as I am concerned there will never be another Moses.
The end times are among us.
