I spent most of last week in Memphis, where I paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 40th anniversary of his assassination. Many traveled from across the country, including John McCain who apologized for opposing the King Holiday bill.Hillary Clinton was in Memphis to pay her respects and speak before the Church of God in Christ Pan African Leadership Summit at Mason Temple. She also took a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum.
Barack Obama was conspicuous by his absence. Frankly, I'm bothered that Obama didn't bother to show up. Dr. King paid the ultimate sacrifice so that African Americans could get to the "mountaintop" but Obama could not sacrifice a few hours of campaigning.
Instead, he was "spreading the message" in Indiana, which holds its primary on May 6. He phoned it in, saying:
I spoke at Dr. King's church on his birthday. I was with the King family then. I obviously gave a fairly fulsome speech on the state of race relations just two weeks ago. And I think it's important to spread the message that Dr. King's work is unfinished in places like Indiana and North Dakota.Obama's absence speaks volumes about 'the state of race relations." Shelby Steele, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and author of "A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Barack Obama and Why He Can't Win," told the Los Angeles Times:
Obama is going back to the larger strategy he used up until Rev. Wright, which is to downplay race.Good luck with that. A recent New York Times poll found:
He knows if there is this backdrop of black protest and anger, the white working-class voters he is trying to pull his way are going to peel away. His whole strategy is to relieve the anxiety by saying he is not interested in race, that he is transcending race.
The survey suggests that Mr. Obama, Democrat of Illinois, may have been at something of a peak in February, propelled by a string of primary and caucus victories over Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, and that perceptions of him are settling down.African Americans remain Obama's most loyal supporters. Blacks gave Obama a pass on skipping Tavis Smiley's annual conference. But he should not be given a free ride. A point underscored by Obama supporter, Cornel West:
Mr. Obama's favorable rating among Democratic primary voters has dropped seven percentage points, to 62 percent, since the last Times/CBS News survey, in late February. While that figure is by any measure high, the decline came in a month during which he endured withering attacks from Mrs. Clinton and responded to reports that his former pastor had made politically inflammatory statements from his church's pulpit in Chicago.
I want to say that I'm deeply disappointed that my dear brother Barack Obama decided not to go pay tribute and lay his wreath for the great Martin Luther King, Jr. That brother Martin's profound love and deep sacrifice for black people, America and humanity is in no way reducible to political calculations, even for the campaign for presidency. That Martin Luther King Jr.'s deep commitment to unarmed truth and unconditional love can in no way be subject to strategies for access to political power. Hence, I have a very deep disagreement with my dear brother, Barack Obama -- in this case, commitment to truth is in tension with the quest for power.Memphis is "Blues City." Every blues lover knows you "never make your move too soon." If Obama doesn't stand with black folks as we honor an American icon, who's to say he'll stand up for black Americans if he gets to the Oval Office?

I can't believe that African Americans are so desparate for a black president that they will let Obama take them for granted. I was so shocked when the people of Mississippi gave him a huge win over Hilliary Clinton and he didn't even go there for a rally. He had appear before everyother states crowd after he won (if there were enough white folk). These people have gone through hell during Katrina, and he decided to go on MSNBC. Think about it folks when was the last time our brother Obama even acknowledged us. I refused to take back seat to anyone, and certainly not a man who is depending on my vote or shall I say taking my vote for granted. I have a feeling a number of African Americans are going to be in for the shock of their lives. He is truly a white man brother.

Banning Bill O’Reilly – The Patriotic Thing to Do
As some of you know, I’ve interacted with Bill O’Reilly several times on his TV and radio shows. I have also had the “pleasure” of interacting with Sean Hannity, host of Hannity and Colmes, another show on Fox. Rush Limbaugh, the ex-drug addict, is another member of the Right Wing Axis of Ignorance, consisting of individuals who use their platforms to socially terrorize people of color.
We are all affected by this and confront this hatred every day at work and at school. All of us know what it’s like to deal with that racist, sexist SOB who worships Bill O’Reilly because O’Reilly validates his racism. This person may be our boss, our co-worker or some other entitled, yet ignorant individual who has not been educated on the racial history of our nation.
Today I woke up angry. I was angry because I thought about what Hannity, O’Reilly and others have done to this election. They’ve worked to bring the worst out in the American people to attack Senator Barack Obama, who has run one of the classiest, most intelligent and conscientious campaigns in American history. The moment that America was on its way toward making a breakthrough in its addiction to racism, the hate mongers from the Axis of Ignorance came marching in to remind America that Obama was just a black little boy.
Bill O’Reilly needs to be taken off the air. Either he is ignorant, racist or represents the interests of racists. Either way, I continue to be insulted by the fact that this man feels comfortable attacking and disrespecting people of color. The type of racism that he and his sidekick Bernard Goldberg bring to the table is nothing short of the same old stuff that we’ve been dealing with for the past 400 years. We also can’t forget Juan Williams, the “Eternal Happy Negro” who conspires to provide black (not African-American, for he is Panamanian) validation for these racist viewpoints.
Among other things, O’Reilly has mentioned the idea of “lynching” Michelle Obama over controversial comments and stated that Hurricane Katrina victims deserved to be abandoned to die by the Federal Government. I can only imagine what would happen if someone said that the 9/11 victims deserved to die…….a black host making that kind of comment would be taken off the air IMMEDIATELY. I personally continue to fight these issues when I am on TV, but there is a point of disbelief one reaches when you see someone get away with one hateful sentence after another from networks that truly don’t give a damn what black people think. We are invisible, irrelevant and disregarded by many of these shows.
Personally, I am tired of it. I am tired of the unfair attacks on Senator Barack Obama, which represent the consistent, racist double standard of Fox News reporting. These individuals are consistently validated, even though they are far less educated, far more inflammatory and much less conscientious than Jeremiah Wright, the man they were licensed to demonize this past month. My skin shudders and my stomach turns when I hear any of them speak, and I do all I can to avoid turning to that channel. I have done a lot of interviews with Fox News in the past, and I don’t fault those who still do. But personally, I just can’t stomach them anymore.
I ask those who believe in American honor and decency to ignore this network. Disregard the analysis, don’t respond to O’Reilly, Hannity or any other racist who says something you don’t agree with. Kill the Devil by starving it of attention. Don’t even watch Fox so you can “see what the enemy is thinking”. Just let them go and focus on a positive and productive future of the country that was built by your people.
If you are so compelled, you may want to email Fox News (email addresses are below) reminding them that this behavior will not be tolerated. If you want to get something off your chest, please email us at info@yourblackworld.com and share your views on this issue. We also have another page at this link (http://yourblackworld.com/bill_oreilly.htm) that allows readers to vent on this issue. I know you’re hurting, and I believe that if we stick together, we can fight the demon. Additionally, ideas for change and fairness in American media are welcome from anyone who wants to send them to us.
Here are some email addresses and phone numbers for producers on Fox News. Even Bill O’Reilly’s address is included. If the spirit moves you, you may choose to email or call one of the producers for the O’Reilly Factor and tell them how you feel. The O’Reilly Factor should change its name to “God Damn America”, for O’Reilly is damning our great nation by enabling its addiction to racism.
Sincerely,
Dr. Boyce Watkins

This whole election process is a shame. I hear the canidates say the same thing over and over. I feel like Im being played with a two sided quarter. Barrack Obama is just a man. The man is running for president...and you want him to validate his ethniticity by attending MLK event when he just spent time with family and gave a speech a couple of weeks ago. He isnt obligatted to go to every black event in the United States. Stop trying to satisfy your need for him to be the way you want him to be. The race is close, in probably the most significant vote in ages. Let him run his race. Barrack is not "Black" Hillary is not "White" wake up America we are dealing with imperfect human beings, stop trying to expect perfection from your leaders...it will never happen. Look at the heart and soul of what he says...Evil has no Color, Good has no color. Once we stop labeling each other and judging people off our expecations the world will become a better place. And all of you black people still mad about slavery...GET OVER IT!!! Everyone has an opportunity to become somebody in this country if you follow the law, work hard and position yourself strategically for sucess. Your skin color does not dictate your future...your decisions do. Stop passing blame to others...if you want to be there for King, be there and appreciate the man, and stop trying to bring other people down. JClemons.
