I spent most of last week in Memphis, where I paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 40th anniversary of his assassination. Many traveled from across the country, including John McCain who apologized for opposing the King Holiday bill.Hillary Clinton was in Memphis to pay her respects and speak before the Church of God in Christ Pan African Leadership Summit at Mason Temple. She also took a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum.
Barack Obama was conspicuous by his absence. Frankly, I'm bothered that Obama didn't bother to show up. Dr. King paid the ultimate sacrifice so that African Americans could get to the "mountaintop" but Obama could not sacrifice a few hours of campaigning.
Instead, he was "spreading the message" in Indiana, which holds its primary on May 6. He phoned it in, saying:
I spoke at Dr. King's church on his birthday. I was with the King family then. I obviously gave a fairly fulsome speech on the state of race relations just two weeks ago. And I think it's important to spread the message that Dr. King's work is unfinished in places like Indiana and North Dakota.Obama's absence speaks volumes about 'the state of race relations." Shelby Steele, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and author of "A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Barack Obama and Why He Can't Win," told the Los Angeles Times:
Obama is going back to the larger strategy he used up until Rev. Wright, which is to downplay race.Good luck with that. A recent New York Times poll found:
He knows if there is this backdrop of black protest and anger, the white working-class voters he is trying to pull his way are going to peel away. His whole strategy is to relieve the anxiety by saying he is not interested in race, that he is transcending race.
The survey suggests that Mr. Obama, Democrat of Illinois, may have been at something of a peak in February, propelled by a string of primary and caucus victories over Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, and that perceptions of him are settling down.African Americans remain Obama's most loyal supporters. Blacks gave Obama a pass on skipping Tavis Smiley's annual conference. But he should not be given a free ride. A point underscored by Obama supporter, Cornel West:
Mr. Obama's favorable rating among Democratic primary voters has dropped seven percentage points, to 62 percent, since the last Times/CBS News survey, in late February. While that figure is by any measure high, the decline came in a month during which he endured withering attacks from Mrs. Clinton and responded to reports that his former pastor had made politically inflammatory statements from his church's pulpit in Chicago.
I want to say that I'm deeply disappointed that my dear brother Barack Obama decided not to go pay tribute and lay his wreath for the great Martin Luther King, Jr. That brother Martin's profound love and deep sacrifice for black people, America and humanity is in no way reducible to political calculations, even for the campaign for presidency. That Martin Luther King Jr.'s deep commitment to unarmed truth and unconditional love can in no way be subject to strategies for access to political power. Hence, I have a very deep disagreement with my dear brother, Barack Obama -- in this case, commitment to truth is in tension with the quest for power.Memphis is "Blues City." Every blues lover knows you "never make your move too soon." If Obama doesn't stand with black folks as we honor an American icon, who's to say he'll stand up for black Americans if he gets to the Oval Office?

You can get stuck in who voted for or against a holiday and the jobs will go IN THIS FLAT ECONOMY OF EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND WORKING ON AND THRU THE WEB... TO COUNTRIES OUTSIDE OF THE SHORELINE.
Listen to the economic plans of a solid Presidential candidate. Hillary knows and can fix this economy. She can get us to a running start.
She has treated everyone with dignity and respect all her life. I am neither black nor white and I feel plenty included in her campaign WITHOUT REFERENCE TO MY COLOR!! THANK YOU!!

Senator Obama was where he needed to be. Most of the people in Memphis know about Dr. King intimately. The group he spoke to in Indiana were a lot less exposed, and needed to hear the unvarished truth about the miracle that was Dr. King.
Frankly, I am concerned that too many of my "brothers and sisters" have only begun to endorse the Senatator after a whole load of White liberals stuck their necks out for him ! And as for the reverent Jesse Jackson...where is his endosement - he's still uncommitted. I have always thought him an opportunist and his fence sitting till he's sure of the winner, confirms this. He can barely contain his jealousy and ire that it's not him in the presidential role.

I, like previous respondants, feel that Obama DID NOT need to show up in Memphis. He should have been doing what he's called to do "going about this business of his campaign".
Only question I have is whether or not Ms. Clinton or Mr. McCain has ever "made" an appearance in any of the previous ceremonies hallmarking the Reverand's assasination?
Further more, how dare Mr. McCain stress the fact that he is 'sorry' he voted against Rev. King's national holiday. How timely is that apology? It's right up there with Bill Clinton's "timely" apology for establishing grossly unfair sentencing laws for cocaine distribution...

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is calling on President George W. Bush to boycott the opening ceremony at the Olympics this summer.
First reported on the Drudge Report, Clinton's call for a boycott specifically cites China's reaction to recent violence in Tibet and inaction in Darfur.
"The violent clashes in Tibet and the failure of the Chinese government to use its full leverage with Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur are opportunities for Presidential leadership," Clinton said in a written statement.
"These events underscore why I believe the Bush administration has been wrong to downplay human rights in its policy towards China. At this time, and in light of recent events, I believe President Bush should not plan on attending the opening ceremonies in Beijing, absent major changes by the Chinese government."
Set to begin on August 8, 2008, the Beijing Olympics have been surrounded by controversy ever since the International Olympic Committee awarded China the Games.
The harsh crackdown by the communist nation against recent protests in Tibet have only intensified calls for boycott.
Clinton did not call for an outright boycott of the Olympics in general, targeting only the Opening Ceremony.
"Americans will stand strong in support of freedom of religious and political expression and human rights. Americans will also stand strong and root for the success of American athletes who have worked hard and earned the right to compete in the Olympic Games of 2008," she said.
Clinton's call makes her the first presidential candidate to call for an outright boycott of the opening ceremonies although other prominent U.S. politicians including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have urged Bush to consider such action.
"I think boycotting the opening ceremony, which really gives respect to the Chinese government, is something that should be kept on the table," Pelosi, D-Calif., told "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts in a recent interview. "I think the president might want to rethink this later, depending on what other heads of state do."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced she will not attend the Olympic Games. Pelosi, meanwhile, has been outspoken in support of Tibet, the site of recent crackdowns on human rights demonstrators by the Chinese government.
In her interview with "GMA", the Speaker continued to denounce China's rule over Tibet and expressed regret that the communist nation would play host to the summer games.
"I don't think China should have gotten the Olympic Games to begin with," Pelosi told GMA. "I had a resolution in the Congress which was very popular, and bipartisan support on it. But they did get them with the promise that they would open up more and have better respect for human rights and freedom of expression. They have not honored that."

Senator Obama is hoping to win the black vote by a coincidence of pigmentation alone. He has not taken the action necessary to prove that he will stand up for us and actively, not just passively/arrogantly represent us.
He declined to make the trip to Memphis, he declined to appear at the State of the Black Union - giving his patented response for all his shortcomings..."I am campaigning."
When he was state senator in Illinois he claims he "didn't know" that 11 of Rezko's rundown slums were in his district, most of them populated by black tenants. When he came from Hawaii to Illinois he joined TUCC as a way to solidify himself with blacks so that he could have a chance to win election. Senator Obama uses his blackness and by extension blacks as a stepping stone to higher office. He has yet to do anything tangible for our community. That he is given a free pass from the bulk of the black community is disgusting. We must hold ourselves accountable.

I hope you know why I posted that news item here..but in case it is unclear, I want to lift something that is so consistent with her repeated message.

It is the first part of her message that is impressive to me. She considers all people as dignified individuals to be treated with respect.
Now THAT is reason to have real HOPE. She has delivered on that truest hope of all humankind. For RESPECT and DIGNIFIED treatment at all times.

Senator obama presents some real concerns. He attempted to present himself as a religous person however he supports abortions and not supportive at all of Christian values. He attends a church that is making a mockery of the name of Christ. Obama feels that he should be more generous of taxpayer money yet in looking at his personal income tax returns. No folks he is a con artist. A fake. No experience no paying his dues. Lies and shaky character as shown by his efforts to appear a supporter of Rev Wright but at same time blaming everything on his grandmother. Walke up brothers and sisters

Sorry that you are bothered. Just another complainer, seeking something, anything to whine about. Has John McCain been in attendance to anything MLK prior to this? How many times has Obama visited the King family members that you are aware or not aware of?
There is much more going on in our world for one to get flustered and bothered about.

Why didn't Obama attend the King Anniversary? Why didn't he attend the event for the Katrina victims? Is it because he has the majority of the black votes locked in. Or maybe he doesn't care. Remember Obama has Kenyan ancestry not black american. Kenya is where his heart is at. He just need you for a little while.
