It seems that the controversy swirling around Barack Obama's former pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright just won't end.
In the May 12th issue of 'Newsweek' magazine, the focus has turned from the Democratic presidential candidate to talk show Queen Oprah Winfrey. It would appear that while Winfrey has parlayed her gift of gab into a lucrative empire, she didn't appreciate the inflammatory tone of Rev. Wright's speech while she attended his church.
Winfrey, a transplant to
But it only took Winfrey two years to pull up stakes, only attending services there infrequently until the mid 1990's.
So what cooled her warm and fuzzy feeling? According to the article, written by Allison Samuel, it was Wright and organized religion that made Winfrey weary.
And while Wright has gone on media blitz blasting his former high profile parishioner, Barack Obama, he remains oddly numb on Winfrey. She turned her back on the church too. She seems to have disagreed with his message, so why the silence when it comes to her?
Perhaps Wright realizes that he captures more of the spotlight by hurting the presidential aspirations of the only African American to come eerily close to the White House. Maybe, he suffers from the "crab in the barrel" syndrome, where it is easy for him to think nothing of trying to hold a black man down if it means getting his own day in the sun. Or, maybe he is enthralled by having his largest audience ever. Finally, it could simply be that Wright is glad that he gets to share his thoughts with the white media over issues that have haunted him for decades.
Whatever the reasons, it is clear that Winfrey determined that she was getting the wrong message from Wright and the church during her years there. She was smart enough to cut her ties before they could become the ties that bound her career. Unfortunately, it took Obama too long to see the difference. One can only hope he can shake the Wright shadow and take the right message with him to the White House.

I agree 100% with poster #11... The good Rev Wright didn't start this mess the good ole boys club did... And I strongly feel that the Rev was speaking his heart, Folk dont have to agree with everything their minister or pastor says, and if it bothers you then don't go back... Freedom of SPEECH we all have it and does the REV WRIGHT, and he also has the RIGHT to defend his name and statis.. I don't think he intended to hurt Obama.. I think Obama has lost focus of his own desires in this race, and now I think its a black against woman dem thing.. and it's sad... I too will be voting for Obama but I do have to say I am very discouraged with his campaign already...

First off, who cares if Oprah left the church. She has lost her mind. Dabbles in Scientology and New Age witch craft, and then when she said that Jesus was not the only way to salvation I about fell out of my seat. The woman must have sold her soul to the devil!!All that success and money and she credits none of that to God....that's blasphemy in itself. She forgets that what the Lord giveth, he also taketh away. Maybe that's why she can't find true love.
Second, I'm still on the fence about Rev. Wright. He said a lot of things that were true or almost true. As far as the AIDS comment, some believe that it started from an experimental polio vaccine given to African children. I'm sorry, those so-called green monkeys have been in Africa for centuries and no one else popped up with AIDS. I believe that he should have delivered the message in a different way or just waited. He knew his comments would affect Obama's campaign. But he did try to distance himself from Obama, he said that he was not Obama's spiritual mentor, that he was just his pastor. He went on to say that if Obama won the election that he would go after him. Funny, I heard not one station catch those words. Futhermore, I have neither heard not one station talk about the Clinton connection to Rev. Wright.
Crab in the bucket syndrome is here and contagious as he11. First Tavis was/is hating. Mad because he felt that Obama snubbed him. We all know that if Obama would have shown up for that convention that he would have no where near gotten as many white votes. He recognizes that the inbreeding hillbillies have different priorites that the educated caucasian. The hillbilly is scared of a black president with black friends, or deep ties...they are afraid that ni66as will take over the country. As a black woman I expect Obama to do nothing more for me than my white community. He shall and will be a president for all the people. But I feel like any person especially a black person, to make up excuses on not to vote for him because of silly stuff like the way his name sounds, or him being possibly a muslim, Rev. Wright, or the "bitter" comment, flag pins, etc...Defiantly have the crab in the bucket syndrome.

From Blacks4Barack...TIME 4 ACTION !!! Thanks to USA Today, it was reported that The Clintons have resorted to racial divisiveness. Hillary stated, basically that her campaign caters to the hard-working Americans, White Americans! That statement has sparked much concern from both blacks and whites (even Hillary supporters) across the country. The desperation of The Clintons is not only exposing their deep rooted prejudice, seperatist sentiment (remember Hillary was a proud 'Goldwater Girl'...Goldwater was a seperatist and against the civil rights act of '64), but becomes even more destructive to the Democratic Party and the developement of unity in America. This final racist tactic is just proof that NOW is the time to end this campaign. Contact the DNC and every SuperDelegate that you can....let them know that HILLARY SHOULD STEP DOWN....NOW !!!!......to save the Democratic Party....and the Re-Birth of America !!! Call the DNC at 202-863-8000.

P.S. We had heard that Tavis was a part of this site (BlackVoices)...and based on the fact that this site never discusses the ills of the Clintons....this site does seem under Tavis control.

Rev. Wright is not the issue, change in The White House is the issue and I don't think Sen. Obama/Pres. Obama will be taking Pastor Wright with him. So a good change will come.

Wow, I'm for sure dumber after reading all this. The gov. gave us aidS? Rev Wright has the right idea?
And Wright is racist, just like Jessy Jackson is a racist. I wish you all would realize they are as damaging to you, as our red neck racists are to us.
We all need to follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest men to ever live in the US. Dr. King
AND OBAMA'S ONLY PROBLEM IS HIS VOTING HISTORY, AND HIS LACK OF EXPERIENCE. NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE VOTING ON JUST THE COLOR OF SKIN.
That being said, I still guarantee if Hillory was the 1st decent white person up for election. We would be the same way:) Congrats in 08!

Mr. Obama is a man that makes his own decision. His decision to attend his chruch was his right. Mr. Obama is a logical man with the ability to take information that is helpful to him and reject issues he agree with. Just because someone attends a particular church does not mean they carry the same ideas. It just mean that they are happy being in the house of the Lord. One question, why isn't the whole church being questioned about not leaving the church. I am certain that they did not agree with parts of the Rev. ideas.

Mr. Wright is just another example of why christianity is not a religion that is suited for blacks. Christianity has been one of the social wedges in the black community, and christianity has believers that are some of the most hypocritical people i know. The last comment that was made by cheryl does have some validity. p.s..........Islam is also not a religion suited for the nubian! Because these religions were forced upon us in order to control us and drive us away from each other. Mr. Wright has fell victim to his own vanglorious ambitions, similar to alot of black pastors. Maybe if Mr. Wright would remember who he serves, then just maybe his attempt to deify himself will reside.

It is the media that keeps trying to keep a connection between Obama and Rev. Wright at the forfront of voters minds. Obama has already denounced his comments and moved on. Because the american public is ignorant of media ploys it continues to have conversations about Wright instead of focusing on Obama's platform. It is the major media outlets in america which gets presidents elected. First Obama had to prove he wasn't muslim, by yelling at the top of his lungs I'm Christian, Rev Wright has been my pastor for 20 years. Then the media went back 5, 10, and 15 years to take excerpts from sermons, taken out-of-context to portray Obama's pastor as unpatriotic, and the american public fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Maybe Oprah left Wright's church because he began to preach against fornication and shacking up with someone who is not your husband as the bible of which Rev Wright preaches calls this behavior sin, and everyone knows that Oprah is shacking up...just a thought.
