As a black man Barack Obama has to walk a very thin line.
As discussed on NPR News and Notes, it will be tricky for Obama to maintain a Presidential posture and take hard Presidential stands while still existing as the "cool black friend" that some voters now have in their minds.
If Obama appears too strong or starts snarling like John McCain, he is likely to be perceived as arrogant at best and threatening at worst.
So here, as if on cue, a reporter describes Presidential hopeful Barack Obama physically "intimidating" Senator Joe Lieberman:
"While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.
Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances."
You're getting this, right? What the hell is "slightly intimidating?" Is the reporter suggesting that Obama is so unruly and his arguments so weak that he would need to physically intimidate Sen. Lieberman, on the Senate floor no less, to make his point? And think about it. One person's intimidation is another one's enthusiastic exchange. Who decides what is intimidating? Lieberman gets to decide in this case and he didn't say it. Of course, the article later goes on to explain that both Senators attempted to keep everything congenial. But I have a problem with words like "backed into a corner" and physically "intimidating" unless they come from the person experiencing those actions. If Lieberman felt physically intimidated he needs to say so, otherwise the reporter is out of line.
Now some folks say that this little dust up is good for Obama. From that standpoint, standing up to Lieberman means that Obama is strong enough to withstand the right-wing attack machine and lead the country in troubled times. I'm just not so sure that the majority of voters will be made to feel more reassured than afraid by media reports like this.
It's going to be a long bumpy road to November. What do you think about this?

The road was long a bumpy when Hillary was in the race. She was running like a Republician and attacking the same way, so this won't be anything new for Obama, he's heard it all before.

Obama has to remember that everyone that says to him that they are for him is not. He has to stand up for himself and I believe he can do that. Obama is inspired with God’s blessings. He has done an excellent job of handling himself and others.

The correct word in this item is 'ARROGANT", and that is exactly what describes HUSSEIN OBAMA. Along with many other words, tell the world he cannot speak his own mind, he has to tell things other people have said, this entire run for the whitehouse. I do wish I could find even "even" one reason to vote for him, the only thing I can say is HE SCARES ME HALF TO DEATH! You vote for him and WE ALL SUFFER!

Obama has written many books in his own words, and there isn't anything arrogant about him, he has more class in his one finger than Hillary and McCain have in their entire body. Speaking of suffering what do you call we are all doing in the Bush campaign we are in a recession, amd people are losing their jobs, and homes everyday, but people like you voted for him what does that say about you.

desribing obama as "arrogant" is classic white racism (i am white by the way).
words white people love to use (preferably when blacks are not present) to describe black males are:
-arrogant
-cocky
-strut
-smirk
they're all used to obliquely criticize any balck male who shows confidence beyond his "place".
and many whites don't even realize it...it's ingrained deep in the culture. and that is tough to root out.

I am going to post something that will be taken the wrong way but I hope it will make you THINK. I am surprised that considering the differences in Black culture compared to everyone else, that it hasn't been suggest that all Africans be put on a reservation like the Indians. But wait a minute...hasn't AOL put you on a reservation already with "Black Voices"? and haven't the politicans done the same with "Black History Month" and the NAACP? Aren't you being seperated from the rest of us constantly? You have been put on a reservation and if I were you I would not be happy about it. Think about it.

Truth, I will rarely comment after my posts are up, but your comment is so insulting that I am compelled to lay it out for you. I was a network news producer for more than 10 years and have won three Emmy awards for my work. I am a graduate of Yale University with a degree in Economics. I am honored to write here at AOL Black Voices because in addition to the infinite number of places people of all hues come for information, AOL Black Voices is one of the most prominent. I write here because I want to write here - I have turned down other invitations from other sites.
Question?Do you ask the sportswriters if they are on a reservation? Do you ask the medical writers if they are on a reservation? Do you ask the financial writers if they are on a reservation? Your version of truth and mine are very different realities.
But I do agree with you about Black History Month. Black History IS American History and should be taught as such. Thanks for reading.

TO: Marge and Truth. Thank you for writing your comments. Your words help me to understand the minds of some white folks. Why don't you just come out and say what you really mean? "Who does that uppity Ni@@er think he is? Why won't he just stay in his place?" I hope you realize that God is the ruler of this world and if Obama wins or loses, it is Gods decision not yours.

First of all let me say that as a black man i am extremely proud of Barack Obama and the courage he has in trying to change the course of this country. Now to address the dumb, ignorant, uneducated, racist comments made by people like Marge and Truth. You two must be some of the dumbest white people in the country. Marge, how can you live in this country in these times and say out of your ignorant mouth that "He scares me half to death". There are far more things to be scared about other than an educated, articulate, sucessful black man running for president. Bush or McCain should scare your ignorant a$$ to death if anybody. People are homeless, jobless, and broker than they have ever been. Not to mention gas is 4 bucks a gallon. That should scare your racist a$$. I bet your the type to be scared to death just by passing a black man on the street. So if a black man was about to take control of this country im sure your shaking in your racist boots. I laugh at idiots like you all the time. Your the same racist that looks at me funny not knowing that I have more knowledge, sucess, and education than a lot of your peers. Now to Truth. Anybody with some common sense would know that after what blacks have been through, that naturally we would like to be separated from whites in various areas. Whites seperate themselves from minorities all the time. Comparing Black History Month and the NAACP to a reservation makes you an idiot. Black History Month is here to remind our present and future generations about the accomplishments and stories of our ancestors. If not for Black History Month we would have limited knowledge of anything that has taken place in this country to our people. Even with Black History Month, we still dont get a fair recollection of people and events that have happened and changed a whole race of people. Not to mention we have it in the shortest month and teachers in schools only teach us about the same 5 black people. How would you feel if whites were ever subject to what every other race of people on this planet have been subject to. You would want some organization such as the NAACP to raise issues and fight for your equality. You should put yourself in the shoes of somebody that is not white so you can see what it takes for us minorities to survive in this country.

To all the people Who say their afraid of wezzzzz!!!
Thank you Blackman, I'll hold your mule so that you can tell them some more real truths, "Opps", but they didn't give us that either. We don't have to justify our selves anymore one man did that a long time ago on the cross so that we could be free now today this is a wake up call for all those who are not on his side,( Jesus ). The last commandment he gave was to love one another as he has loved us. If you don't get it then you will be gone or left behind. All of this is a movement. When the Spirit of God is moving he is testing our hearts Whose on the Lords side. God wants his people ( the Body of Christ ) to be ready when Jesus comes back to get the Bride. It is bigger than anything anyone can say, check out your bible, about the time Moses was hearing from God. All of the complaining and mummuring people God delt with them immediately. You can not stop the change. If you are feeling guilty about the way that the black people have been treated by all means say that. And you or anyone who feels guilty about what they have said or done to any black person only because they are black, that is not right, and that is not Godly. Repent and appoligize and tell the truth what are you afraid of, black people are not the ones that are cutting up human flesh and eating it. We don't have long tails, we love you. If you love God you love black people no getting around it. How can you say you love God who you can't see and your black brothers or sisters are all around you who you can see? You don't know the God that I Love and serve. Can't we all get along? Yes we can! Be Blessed
