As a black man Barack Obama has to walk a very thin line.
As discussed on NPR News and Notes, it will be tricky for Obama to maintain a Presidential posture and take hard Presidential stands while still existing as the "cool black friend" that some voters now have in their minds.
If Obama appears too strong or starts snarling like John McCain, he is likely to be perceived as arrogant at best and threatening at worst.
So here, as if on cue, a reporter describes Presidential hopeful Barack Obama physically "intimidating" Senator Joe Lieberman:
"While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.
Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances."
You're getting this, right? What the hell is "slightly intimidating?" Is the reporter suggesting that Obama is so unruly and his arguments so weak that he would need to physically intimidate Sen. Lieberman, on the Senate floor no less, to make his point? And think about it. One person's intimidation is another one's enthusiastic exchange. Who decides what is intimidating? Lieberman gets to decide in this case and he didn't say it. Of course, the article later goes on to explain that both Senators attempted to keep everything congenial. But I have a problem with words like "backed into a corner" and physically "intimidating" unless they come from the person experiencing those actions. If Lieberman felt physically intimidated he needs to say so, otherwise the reporter is out of line.
Now some folks say that this little dust up is good for Obama. From that standpoint, standing up to Lieberman means that Obama is strong enough to withstand the right-wing attack machine and lead the country in troubled times. I'm just not so sure that the majority of voters will be made to feel more reassured than afraid by media reports like this.
It's going to be a long bumpy road to November. What do you think about this?

First, let me address JACKO: AS A BLACK MAN, you just
showed how ignorant you are. Obviously, you are part of the white machine not Obama. You want some politician with at 30 years or more of experience. If you had read or followed Obama's history from childhood, you would never make such a stupid statement. It's unfornunate, but this political world has been controlled by white men forever. He would not have won the nomination without whites or any other race. Most jeaslous black people of other black people, only see him as a true politician who is mixed, if he selects an all black cabinet, which is naive to began with. Believe me, his cabinet will be comprised of all races which is the way it should be. Having 90 years of experience doesn't always work, I realized that after being in Management for 25 years.
I am a 58 year old black female that grew up in Memphis in the 60's, when restrooms were labeled "colored or white" and so were the water fountains and no such thing as going to a "white" restaurant. I marched with King during the Sanitation strike and there were alot of whites marching right along beside us. Just like whites, blacks must stop steotyping whites. This melting pot is growing and has a long way to go but let's not slow down the progress.
As for Obama being mixed, no one has the choice of whether they want to be born and definitely has no control of picking what color their parents are going to be. Just as you had no choice of whether you wanted to be born or not. It is time for this racism of blacks between each other over the color of their skin. Remember, this melting pot started when the white masters raped their black slaves and yes, some of them got pregnant. So stop being stupid and silly.

KAYLE: you are one of the cowards that put your racist hatred out on the internet. I don't usually wish bad things on anyone but YOUR day is coming, because GOD is watching and with all your hatred, God is going to show you what happens to people like you when their heart is hardened and when something terribly awful happens to you in the near future, think about this day that you incited more hatred.

lawsond as a black man I applaud you for standing up with and telling the truth, if all people black, white, or what ever race, would do the same then people like marge, woud'nt have a platform to spout that crap out of their mouths, that they do, and by the way all people that, dont tell it like it is, are a bigger part of the problem than, the ones out front that live it, and practice it every day meaning rasist remarks, and actions,

I strongly feel that this country need change, and I am very happy that Hillary finally had to end her negitve campagn. I dare her think that because she is white that the table would had turn for her.Hillary was force to pass the torch to a Black man and that ate her up, then she was force to ask her 18 millin voters to support Obama. This country is so racist and it is so sad the racism is taught.I hate when certain white people feel that that have higher rights and every thing belongs to them only. This campaign has showed how divided America still is.It is GOD'S will that Obama win this election and no one can stop it.All whites are not bad people but when yo have the large numbers that still have hate in their hearts things stay the same.Praise the Lord the Kingdom has come to clean the White HOuse and change the name to The Presidents House.

I'm so tired of ignorant people stating ignorant comments (he's arrogant, he's the anti-christ, he's black)! Who cares what color someone's skin is as long as they are looking out for EVEYONE'S welfare and will use judgment before rushing this country into situations? I know one thing for sure: this election seasonhas brought out the most childish, racist, ignorant people I have ever seen in my life. It's like someone removed the woodwork and like roaches, they just scurried out! I, for one, can't wait until the day when Sen. Obama becomes President Obama!

To Marge and Truth: The both of your posts are ignorant, condescending and stereotypical of whites who feel when "Negroes" are strong, educated, self assuring and confident, it threatens you in some way so you label these "Negroes" as arrogant, cocky, intimidating. Blacks like this must be kept in their place and brought down. Some whites have so much racism, hatred and bigotry inside of their hearts and souls....a hatred which is so deeply ingrained inside of them. When they are now confronted with that racism, they try to pass it off and make excuses for it but those excuses do not fool black people. As for the "reservation" statement by poster truth........It is obvious you were asleep in history class. It wasn't to long ago when blacks liked my grandparents and parents and other relatives in South Carolina, lived under the racist caste system called "JIM CROW." Blacks in the deep south under law where separated from whites. They could not attend the same schools, colleges, or any other public institution despite the fact that blacks paid state and federal taxes for these establishments. Movie theaters, buses, trains....they were all segregated. it was not until these laws were found to be unconstitutional, when these laws were taken off the books. So if blacks are separated now, it is by choice, and it is so that we do not have to read ignorant, racist, stereotypical comments from whites like you!!!!! It was whites who think just like you who implemented the segregation laws in the first place because it is people like you who have always felt that you were superior to blacks! Then you have the nerve to make the statement that you posted???

Don't form an opinion of White men based on NPR. You do yourself and us a disservice. I do not feel intimidated by Obama, my problem with him is that he is a left wing Socialist.
