Does this look like Barack Obama? A Utah Couple thinks so, or thought so. They may have stopped selling their odd lil' monkey doll product. They called it TheSockObama doll.
Does Curious George look like Barack Obama to you? A Marietta, Georgia bar owner thinks so.
Now what about ...
... this doll? Does it look like Obama? A German manufacturer thinks so.Now I don't know what the Germans are thinking. In my humble opinion, that little doll looks a lot more like Dr. King than Obama. My hunch is that the German manufacturers don't see that it makes much difference. Obama's black (self-identified) and the doll's black, so there. But the other two purveyors of modern day Jim Crow toys are American. And they just don't get what all the fuss is about.
I have a little empathy for the Utah couple. There aren't many blacks in Utah. And the ones who live there have plenty of stories about whites in a pre-60's era state-of-mind; of people doing things like just walking up to them and rubbing their hair out of curiosity. I sincerely believe that David and Elizabeth Lawson of TheSockObama doll infamy meant no racial offense. But they are learning that we black folks, and folks who care about our feelings, have a thing about black folks being portrayed as animals. Monkeys no less. Go figure.
BUT THERE'S AN UPDATE (6-19) the doll may not be shelved just yet, despite cries of racism from around the country. Now they are looking for a new toy maker.
For now, there are no images of the doll on their website now: just an apology.
At first, I believed their plea of "naiveté" - that they didn't understand. Now, I don't. The Lawsons know exactly what they are doing now.
I don't want to get all "grand conspiracy" on you but I think these Jim Crow portrayals of Barack Obama are examples of racism boiling out into the open. Obama's strong candidacy is triggering a lot of reaction. Think about the bar owner. Via protests outside his bar, press reports and customer complaints, Mike Norman has been made very well aware that black people find it offensive when other people portray them as monkeys. He doesn't give a care. He says black folks, and the people who care about our feelings, just need to get over it and stop being so sensitive. That's a racist stance.
In effect Norman is saying "You people don't know. I know what's good. I know how you need to feel. Because I say so."
The good news is that you can no longer buy TheSockObama doll or an Obama as Curious George t-shirt, for NOW!. The publisher of Curious George threatened to sue.

He does look like curious george lol.
Come on folks lets see the humor in it instead
of getting bent all out of shape. I think Obama
is going to be a great president but I still can't
stop thinking about the uncanny resemblance he has
with curious george. Curious George is Cute.
And by the way I am Puerto Rican so I am not being
racist, just my opinion.

If we as black folk think for one minute that things are going to lighten up because of Barack Obama's nomination, then we might as well give it up now. Barack Obama is not here to save us, but to WAKE US THE F**K UP. He doesn't say "YES I CAN", he says, "YES WE CAN". The opposition to his candidacy is a given. All of us need to do homework on John McCain so we can CLEARLY see how warped and out of touch he is. McCain is dangerous. He is caught up in a time warp of being a POW in Viet Nam. He is in dire need of anger management counseling. He is a loose cannon with NO clear leadership skills. He fip flops his position on issues at the drop of a hat. Just check the man out on You Tube. If you thought Bush was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet if McCain gets in office.

There is so much ignorance still 'showing its dirty head' in the world's most developed country that I am amazed that many see/consider us as powerful nation.
These folks probably haven't read a book since they graduated from the 6th grade, and have not travelled where the literate of world have made a mark. As those in Kentucky and West Virginia, they are proud of their lack of knowledge and probably hold tenaciously to the idea that 'earth is flat". As a nation, the world is looking on through cable and the rest of the new media. This time around they are seeing the 'warts' and all.

I AM TIRED OF THE NASTY NEGATIVE ATTITUDE THESE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY HAS SHOWN TOWARDS BLACKS IN SOME TYPE OF INDIRECT WAY AND THINKS THAT IT GOING TO GET THEM FAR, WE ARE READY FOR CHANGE AND WE ARE LOOKING TO MOVE FORWARD, THE TIME IS COMING TO AN END THEY KNOW IT SO THE FEAR IS THERE IN MANY OLDER NEGATIVE WHITES, , THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE CHANGE THATS COMING AND IM GLAD NEITHER DOES THE GOVERMENT, SO WE AS A RACE WILL RISE ABOVE ALL OF THE FOOLISHNESS WITH OR WITH OUT THEM, I SUPPORT CHANGE AND WISH OBAMA GREAT SUCCESS WITH CHANGE AND MY PRAYERS FOR TAKING A STAND LIKE DR.KING AND SO MANY OTHERS HAVE IN THE PASS, GOD WILL PROTECT HIM FROM THE NASTY ENEMIES OF THIS COUNTRY.

Racism is alive and well in America, always has been and always will be. Just think of people who would have no job without racism,
Da Reve Jesse, Da Rev Al, Louie Farakhan, Da Rev Wright, KKK, and on and on.
WAKE UP AMERICA RACISM IS A HUGE INDUSTRY IN THIS COUNTRY

This is surely negetive however we are going to IGNORE
this and move on, we are proud and we are not going to feed into something that tries to bring us down.
If anything it makes us to be even better at whatever
we do to achieve what needs to be achieved.

well its no suppise, racism still and will always exist. White america has and will be forever racist, as long as whites fear blacks and othere races due thier ingnorances, this is the reaction to be expected. so lets not for a mintue kid ourselves into thinking that racism had lessened.

You better give a rats azz about the mindset's of the racist individuals who find it necessary to further degrade and discriminate against a race of people. If you have 1 in a thousand who hate a people, you got problems. And don't tell me these people don't know what the heck they are doing and you want me to beleive it...you might as well sell me that Bay Bridge. Ignorance still seems to rear it's dangerous and ugly head. We need to stamp them out. As we march into the future with a fresh start, a new face and a promise of change we do so aggressivly but continue to look over our shoulders for that 1 in a thousand who will not conform to change. Remember he is a threat.
