Does this look like Barack Obama? A Utah Couple thinks so, or thought so. They may have stopped selling their odd lil' monkey doll product. They called it TheSockObama doll.
Does Curious George look like Barack Obama to you? A Marietta, Georgia bar owner thinks so.
Now what about ...
... this doll? Does it look like Obama? A German manufacturer thinks so.Now I don't know what the Germans are thinking. In my humble opinion, that little doll looks a lot more like Dr. King than Obama. My hunch is that the German manufacturers don't see that it makes much difference. Obama's black (self-identified) and the doll's black, so there. But the other two purveyors of modern day Jim Crow toys are American. And they just don't get what all the fuss is about.
I have a little empathy for the Utah couple. There aren't many blacks in Utah. And the ones who live there have plenty of stories about whites in a pre-60's era state-of-mind; of people doing things like just walking up to them and rubbing their hair out of curiosity. I sincerely believe that David and Elizabeth Lawson of TheSockObama doll infamy meant no racial offense. But they are learning that we black folks, and folks who care about our feelings, have a thing about black folks being portrayed as animals. Monkeys no less. Go figure.
BUT THERE'S AN UPDATE (6-19) the doll may not be shelved just yet, despite cries of racism from around the country. Now they are looking for a new toy maker.
For now, there are no images of the doll on their website now: just an apology.
At first, I believed their plea of "naiveté" - that they didn't understand. Now, I don't. The Lawsons know exactly what they are doing now.
I don't want to get all "grand conspiracy" on you but I think these Jim Crow portrayals of Barack Obama are examples of racism boiling out into the open. Obama's strong candidacy is triggering a lot of reaction. Think about the bar owner. Via protests outside his bar, press reports and customer complaints, Mike Norman has been made very well aware that black people find it offensive when other people portray them as monkeys. He doesn't give a care. He says black folks, and the people who care about our feelings, just need to get over it and stop being so sensitive. That's a racist stance.
In effect Norman is saying "You people don't know. I know what's good. I know how you need to feel. Because I say so."
The good news is that you can no longer buy TheSockObama doll or an Obama as Curious George t-shirt, for NOW!. The publisher of Curious George threatened to sue.

I'm tired of black people eating complaining about how they are mistreated and profiled. They happen to be one of the few races that live up to their atereotypes.

Your own ignorance is held in your op-ed pieces here. Spelling, punctuation, proper grammar, these are signs of the educated. Look at your uneducated, sourceless, information lacking opinions above and see where you have brought yourself. Check out your problems as a society and wonder that it's not the white man that is holding you down, it's your own self. I am a white male who has been racially separated via my education, my looks, financial aid, scholarships for school because my mother is uneducated and through careers that I have had. I have many diverse friends and I have noticed that we can overcome our differences by communication, respect and common love for our brother that bleeds red, not black not white, not chinese, not green. Our differences can make us stronger but it takes an attitude of giving and not taking from those who try to help us. Look at your own society and stop giving support to young girls and their love for booty dancing, unhealthy eating, morbid obesity, lack of exercise except for spreading their legs to have another child out of wedlock. Teach them that only through education will they prosper. Turn off MTV and go outside and play. Take twenty dollars that your spending on Jeezy cd's and put it in the bank. Start taking back your culture and your people will follow. There is no reason that there should be this much division over people when there is not a one of us that was held is slavery anymore. We all have the same opportunities in the land of the free. I didn't spend my last five years defending freedom to see it be taken away from selfish, ignorant niggars. Niggars are white, black, asian, hispanic. It depicts of ignorance not of race. Know your history or your doomed to repeat it. By the way, the jews were the first recorded people to be enslaved for more than a thousand years. So when you think you have it bad, remember someone else had it worse.

I have never been more offended then when folks think of a sock monkey as rascist! It has never been that to anyone! It was only what we poor people did when we didn't have to money to buy our kids Christmas presents. I love sock mokneys myself and have one I've had for over 30 years and enjoy him because the folkart makes me smile.
