Does this look like Barack Obama? A Utah Couple thinks so, or thought so. They may have stopped selling their odd lil' monkey doll product. They called it TheSockObama doll.
Does Curious George look like Barack Obama to you? A Marietta, Georgia bar owner thinks so.
Now what about ...
... this doll? Does it look like Obama? A German manufacturer thinks so.Now I don't know what the Germans are thinking. In my humble opinion, that little doll looks a lot more like Dr. King than Obama. My hunch is that the German manufacturers don't see that it makes much difference. Obama's black (self-identified) and the doll's black, so there. But the other two purveyors of modern day Jim Crow toys are American. And they just don't get what all the fuss is about.
I have a little empathy for the Utah couple. There aren't many blacks in Utah. And the ones who live there have plenty of stories about whites in a pre-60's era state-of-mind; of people doing things like just walking up to them and rubbing their hair out of curiosity. I sincerely believe that David and Elizabeth Lawson of TheSockObama doll infamy meant no racial offense. But they are learning that we black folks, and folks who care about our feelings, have a thing about black folks being portrayed as animals. Monkeys no less. Go figure.
BUT THERE'S AN UPDATE (6-19) the doll may not be shelved just yet, despite cries of racism from around the country. Now they are looking for a new toy maker.
For now, there are no images of the doll on their website now: just an apology.
At first, I believed their plea of "naiveté" - that they didn't understand. Now, I don't. The Lawsons know exactly what they are doing now.
I don't want to get all "grand conspiracy" on you but I think these Jim Crow portrayals of Barack Obama are examples of racism boiling out into the open. Obama's strong candidacy is triggering a lot of reaction. Think about the bar owner. Via protests outside his bar, press reports and customer complaints, Mike Norman has been made very well aware that black people find it offensive when other people portray them as monkeys. He doesn't give a care. He says black folks, and the people who care about our feelings, just need to get over it and stop being so sensitive. That's a racist stance.
In effect Norman is saying "You people don't know. I know what's good. I know how you need to feel. Because I say so."
The good news is that you can no longer buy TheSockObama doll or an Obama as Curious George t-shirt, for NOW!. The publisher of Curious George threatened to sue.

I watch MSNBC and Keith Olberman has it right every night the news channel that to me is all for others CNN and I never watch Fox News or Pat O'reillybecause it is an republican station that's why they are always haten on Obama,Pat Buchanan is to me a true racist & should not be on TV,but MSNBC do have some real people on it to watch that do give Obama praise and my man Keith is the one on the true believers of Obama their is another one to who comes on after him-can't think of his name-but the Matthews man I am not really all that okay with-but the best news is at 8pm est here on the east coast N.C. BUT we as black people already see this coming racistism will never go away maybe tone down some, but it shouldn't even exist but it does-God made us all in one image and everyone bleeds the same red blood-that will not change,I just donot feed into all this negatism-for we know what to expect for we are already prepared ourselves for all this racistism-so we can handle ourselves in a way OC-(other color) will be confused as to why we are not acting like fools because that is the way they have seen us act-so what we do is vice verser the situation and make them look foolish & stupid. At 1st I got a little warm-but then I thought"this is the nonsense we go thru everyday I am not going to feed into their ignorance- we know we have been called names all ourlives-but we are better than they are that is their fear-so don't feed off of their fears-let them choke themselves to death-for we have the last laugh.

To Quote William Ernest Henley:
"... It matter's not how straight the gate,
How charged the punishment of the scroll.
I am the master of my fate.
I am the captain of my soul."
Yes We Can!
And you better believe it!

I'm sorry, enlightened or not, educated or not; I would personnaly rip that T-shirt off of anyone that was wearing it. As far as that Aunt Jemima doll is concerned, who the hell would dare to have on in public; it is so passe.
Get over it world; we are here to stay and we are putting everything it your face; all the things that you have always know about us as a people.

I don't know why we are even giving these people any attention at all. The more we react; the more they get what they want. They want to spread their messages of hate and racial intolerance. I say we just ignore them and their attempts to show the world their ignorance. Instead, we should focus on encouraging young people to get out and vote in November so that Obama can be about the business of promoting change. We can make change if we really try and wasting time complaining about ignorance is only getting in the way!

Defy the haters, because the very fact that someone created a monkey doll to portray our potentional president shows their own personal ignorance. Really can you stop stupid people from every really being stupid? I don't think so, just as you can never really stop super intelligent people from being super intelligent. The facts always remain clear.

I think that anybody that uses that reference to a monkey or any other primate/animal of any kind from this country or any other country knows exactly what their saying and doing when they are infering to someone African American it's a RACIAL SLUR!!! If you don't know that then you've been living under a rock for the past two hundred years

I'm totaly inclined to agree with 'Jazzman',blackfolk better start opening their damn eyes cause these other folk ain't "playin"!
And as for 'Allie', I believe you at saying you don't think you're being "racist" cause you're 'Puerto Rican' and that you truly find Mr.Obama to be in resemblance of 'Curious George' and I believe that it truly "is" your opinion which you're entitled to.
But honestly dear do you really think that being 'Puerto Rican' makes you or any other person of 'Afro Latin' decent makes you immune to having the ability to be racist or bigoted?? How naive!
