Barack Obama is garnering praise for upbraiding black fathers. With his Father's Day speech, Obama is being hailed "as a centrist voice of moral authority, a position that resonates, not just in the African-American community, but among voters at large."
Fact is, Obama follows a long line of African Americans who have spoken honestly about black father absence. Black organizations, including the National Urban League, have called attention to black fatherlessness; in 1999 Morehouse College convened a Conference on African American Fathers. ...
In 2003, Rep. Danny K. Davis launched a year-long dialogue on the "State of the African American Male." I attended the kickoff event in DC, where hundreds of black elected officials, community leaders, academics, activists and concerned citizens came together to strategize and propose solutions to, among other things, the decline in the marriage rate and father absence.
And lest we forget, more than a million black men stood on the National Mall and pledged to improve themselves "spiritually, morally, mentally, socially, politically and economically" for the benefit of themselves and their family.
So the black community has not been M.I.A. or AWOL in addressing this critical issue.
Truth be told, the congregants of Apostolic Church of God were not the intended audience. Obama used their pulpit to reach out to white voters:
White America can't resist liking him for his words. For them, such a message was deeply satisfying to hear. It took them off the hot spot, even if only for a minute. It was an echo of all they hope is true -- that any man, no matter the odds against him, can pull his socks up and get with the program. It was a respite from helplessness. At yesterday's forum at the Paley Center for Media, I asked Dr. Ronald Walters, a senior staffer with Rev. Jesse Jackson's 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns, whether it was fair to characterize Obama's speech as a Sister Souljah moment. His response in a word, yes.
Dr. Walters told me Obama "uses the black community every now and then as a way to deal with another constituency." He added:
I'm sick and tired of Obama using the black community as a way of deflecting his real interest in conservative evangelicals by focusing on moral responsibility instead of dealing with corrective public policy.Good question.
If he's going to be that specific about one side of the equation, where is the specificity about the other side of the equation, the public policy side? Where is the black agenda?

26. #22, you done lost your "DAMN mind"!!! You made a little sense in #21 until the smart part. Let me put a bug in your ear, first off, PRESIDENT Obama was not delivering from a political stand point. He was addressing an issue that has become a serious problem among the black community in which he is absolutely right. It takes a man with dignity to relate to his culture about this unfortunate epidemic even while in this trying stage of his life. But you would know this by raising eight black children right? And as far as other black men being worthy and capable, this is only the beginning, and we are going to start with PRESIDENT Obama. AMERICA is going to make that determination, now go houlihoop with that!
---------------------
you really need to re read the post; I was merely responding to the orginal post; I am not black nor do I have eight kids! If you have a problem with the response thereafter then reply accordily and I will read and give thought;the same way I give thought to Barack Obama who I support for right now

Obama can't please everybody! Look at the big picture and follow his strategy to be an instrument of change. His run for the White House has opened up discussions on race and other issues that have been bottled up for years since the civil rights movement. His comments on father's day were right on point. As African Americans we must not be afraid to confront the demons in ourselves that hold us back as we press forward for equal opportunities.

So now that Obama speaks truth about our shyt we get offended. NEGRO PLEASE!!!!!! Truth of the matter is, many brothers ARE NOT TAKING CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN, bottom line. So now Obama's throwing the Black community under the bus? Naw, man I don't think so. I didn't hear the speech in it's entirety, but if I'm not mistaken he said Black men were ACTING like boys. If it's you he's talking about step up adn take care of you seeds, if it's not you then great. Here's a thought for the naysayers: IF IT DON'T APPLY, LET IT FLY.
Furthermore, if she good enough to screw, then she should be good enough to marry. My brothers (especially the younger ones) have this so-called "PIMP" mentality. But even a pimp takes care of his women. And ladies, you should be more selective about who you choose to give it up to. If he's not taking care of "lil" JO JO, what makes you think he's gonna take care of your baby. We just need to stop accepting being somebody's baby daddy or baby momma, and start being somebody's HUSBAND or WIFE. It's really time to stop playing house and start buying one for our families. Well, that's just my opinion.

I can understand why you crabs and adversaries are glad that a Black won the nomination... I can also understand why we never had a Black nominee before. If you would clean your ears out and listen you will find out that the man is for change. There were times when the man had to be both Black and White. But no you crabs and adversaries don’t want change, it might make you somebody other crabs in a barrel pulling him down and the devils adversaries. seeking to and fro to devour him. And you are surely pleasing the enemies. In order to deal with your negativity he would have to get down in the gutter with you crabs and adversaries. Be proud that finally God has sent someone to do the right thing for all. Where are you all going to be on the day or reckoning? If he was White you would not be belittling him. I bet you all voted that Known and documented alcoholic and Crack head George W. Bush.

Now Obama is running all these commercials only showing him with his white mama and grandfather. Right after he made that supposedly caring Father's day speech. Someone should tell Obama that whites cant get him elected and at the endof the day, he can not start trashing blacks, Muslims and others to kiss white folks butt. He has already lost my vote. Don't start nothing want be nothing. We've been polite to him but all this pandering and trying to please white foks gonna leave his half-african butt right on the door steps of the white house. Blacks gonna be just fune without him.
