A new magazine about race and ethnicity issues launched this week and the magazine's creator says the Jena Six case inspired her to create the publication.
RiseUp, based in Kansas City, Mo., is expected to reach 4.3 million people, getting inserted in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and eight other Sunday newspapers each week.
"I started RiseUp because I wanted to provide a readily accessible tool to help us solve some of the problems we face as a society when it comes to race relations," founder Janice Ellis said. ...
"What struck me most was the Jena Six case and how high-school children were using some of the most hateful symbols in our history in this day and age to hurt one another. That proves that there is a real educational gap around race and what we hold in common," Ellis told Newsweek.
Ellis told Newsweek that the overall goal of the magazine is to celebrate race and ethnicity and help us better understand our differences; to celebrate our commonalities and build a great foundation to bridge the gaps that divide us.

In order to solve a problem you have to identify it. Is this magazine going to be about white racism against blacks while the racism that latinos dish out against blacks is overlooked. Thier culture is very racist against blacks and not much is said about it. Its like they get a pass and are allowed to act disparingly and racist towards blacks and it's o.k. so long as they aren't white. As if being disrespected by whites is the only kind of disrespectfulness that should not be tolerated. Anyone else notice more and more, the racism being exhibited by young hispanic adults and even hispanic children towards blacks?

I agree with this comment about racism against Blacks
from Latinos. It's really bad. I understand why so many Black people are against illegal immigration. But
it's like they have to put us down to get favoritism
from whites. This really needs to be addressed in this mag. But I'm sure whites are behind this whole
mess.

There is some racism coming from latino's but not all out. They have a problem dealing with racism from day to day also, I have spoken to a few, Puerto rican people are not exempt from racism nor mexicans. Here in Orlando Florida it has been different. People socialize, somewhat;now and then something is said to another out of contex. But first as the better man I try to give respect to those that could be weak and obsorbent of the negitive things that occure here in America, hoping to pass respect on; form that point it is all up to them. I might not be around when that person opens the door for someone at the next store or gas station, hoping that my lil deed rubs off on him or her, lest they disrespect someone and get an ugly response. I'm trying to pass the good shid around
everybody have a toke!,,nssst! nssssst!

People please understand that certain people were breeding like animals in order to upset the natural thing against blacks and whites. This started around the 30s and 40s,when whites felt they were were losing, they imported these buffers(our obstacles).Black people have a lot to learn about who is our friends and who,s not.Overthe span of many years I have witnessed doctors(non black) encouraging black women and girls to have abortions, while telling latinos have as many kids as you want. This is a different kind of genocide, butthats whatit is.

Ok yes people come from different ethnic points ,people are different, yes ,yet racism has eaten its way through all ethnic, social , geographic, and financial backdrops to now become a subtle yet very concrete weapon against people who are considered šnot from hereš i live in europe, and i have seen whites against blacks , whites against latinos, the latinos in turn against blacks, here in spain they will quickly tell you oh we are very new to this immigration thing,so evryother day they commit seeminly simple but very powerful crimes against people of different colour all in the name of ah` we dont know how to handle this, after 30 years of living with the so called immigrants what excuse would you now profer? as your reasons? and we arent even going back to the fact thatthey spanish people too where immigrants to countries like argentina, venezuela e.t.c.not too long , ago i wish wecan have the opportunity to buy this magazine if only to bridge a little gap!!

In just reading some of the comments it is clear that there needs to be a dialogue on cultural divides, I hope this one works to allow communication to succeed in opening minds. Good Luck Ms. Ellis!
