A new magazine about race and ethnicity issues launched this week and the magazine's creator says the Jena Six case inspired her to create the publication.

RiseUp, based in Kansas City, Mo., is expected to reach 4.3 million people, getting inserted in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and eight other Sunday newspapers each week.

"I started RiseUp because I wanted to provide a readily accessible tool to help us solve some of the problems we face as a society when it comes to race relations," founder Janice Ellis said. ...

Janice Ellis"What struck me most was the Jena Six case and how high-school children were using some of the most hateful symbols in our history in this day and age to hurt one another. That proves that there is a real educational gap around race and what we hold in common," Ellis told Newsweek.

In the first issue, the magazine covers weddings and celebrating ethnic heritage;closing the racial divide and future issues will focus on education and the election.

Ellis told Newsweek that the overall goal of the magazine is to celebrate race and ethnicity and help us better understand our differences; to celebrate our commonalities and build a great foundation to bridge the gaps that divide us.
