For others, it was relief that the justice system "worked" for a black man. In any case, there haven't been any notable, organized protests from black men about R. Kelly's behavior on that nasty tape - until now.
Dr. William Jelani Cobb, a Spellman College history professor and author, is circulating a petition many are citing as an overdue rallying cry to African American men; asking them to stand as protectors of the community. The petition is called, simply: Statement of Black Men Against the Exploitation of Black Women. ...

But there is no doubt about this: some young Black woman was filmed being degraded and exploited by a much older Black man, some daughter of our community was left unprotected, and somewhere another Black woman is being molested, abused or raped and our callous handling of this case will make it that much more difficult for her to come forward and be believed.
And then Cobb suggests that black men must assert themselves as protectors of black women:
This is about more than R. Kelly's claims to innocence. It is about our survival as a community. Until we believe that our daughters, sisters, mothers, wives and friends are worthy of justice, until we believe that rape, domestic violence and the casual sexism that permeates our culture are absolutely unacceptable, until we recognize that the first priority of any community is the protection of its young, we will remain in this tragic dead-end.
As a black woman, I feel my heart swell when I read this. As I see it, Cobb has thrown down a gauntlet for black men, and some are picking it up. At the time of this post, there are nearly one thousand signatures on the petition.
But then again, maybe I've got it all wrong. What do you think? Is it about time black men stand up and speak out in defense of black women and children? Or do you think R. Kelly was found innocent; so just let it go and move on?

in this day and age when all people all families are under attack . we have a song that has been playing since THE FIRST BLACKS HAVE BEEN BOUGHT HER. OUR WOMEN ARE EXPLOITABLE . BY FAMILY,BY WHITES, BY BLACKMEN THEMSELVES. I HAVE A DAUGHTER AND I THINK THAT MR. KELLY SHARES THAT WITH ME . BUT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM HAS ALWAYS TRIED TO DEVALUE THE BLACK FAMILY . THEY DIVIVDE GENDERS AND PIT THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER.BLACKMEN MEN IN JAIL ,BLackwomen are a close second . for a people to survive their has to be prodginy. fora people to move forward there has to be unity . we do so much to ourselves. when will we do for each other and stop worshiping the all mighty dollar, which rap music of today ,as well as most media compells us to obey.

I am not an R Kelly fan,but it is extremely difficult to have a trial letalone win one without a certain amount of eveidence, People say it was R Kelly on the tape, but it was not obvious or the Jury would have seen it and said "Thats Him".
The young underaged girl - who is sid to be the "vitims" says That was NOT her on the Tape - I have not seen the tape so I cant say either way , but there seems to be a Too Many "almosts", "ifs" and "maybes" to make it an open-and-shyt case and R.Kelly has money and influnce - so he was found Not Guilty. All this other stuff about Boycotting R. Kelly is stupid IMO. I dont think women should be abused, but R.Kelly did not "Create" violence against women and Boycotting him is certainly not going to "End" It.

I wish as a BLACK WOMEN, I could sign the damn petition. I was totally shocked, I was speechless about the verdict and I still am. R. F****NG Kelly is NASTY. I stopped be n a fan of his when he was on tour with Jay Z, and he went stomping off like a big baby, because he wasn't getting the applause that Jay was getting, that show's his child like mind right there, now he is singing songs, about being in clubs and poppin bottles, and being with Whore's, etc. He is just NASTY. And that young girls family should be ashamed of themselves, just like the parents in the Michael Jackson scandal. I would never sacrafice my children for any amount of money. I know they wish it would all go away, and they probably didn't want the media invading their personal lives, anybody associated with that girl would becaome a target, which wouldn't be fair at all, but that's a chance I would have taken if it were my daughter, sister, neice, cousin or whatever.

I'll sign the petition, but yet the black public support that crap on BET. Many of those young females do not look over 16 years of age in the videos. The black males are becoming more screwed up as they grow up without fathers.

I am so tired of hearing the so called outrage over the R Kelly situation. If these same outraged people had been told it was the Pope on the tape then they would have grabbed the reins and run with that mess. The prosecution had NO evidence of any crime other than a grainy video of which wasn't clear as to whom any of the participants in the video were with any sense of clarity. In addition there were just a few people who said it was the girl while the alleged victim denied it was even her. And the icing on the cake was testimony from a woman who had stolen from R Kelly, allegedly participated in a sexual tryst with him and the minor girl - and who by the way was given immunity for it. She finally came to authorities years later only after she was rebuffed in her attempts to extort money from him to prevent her from going to authorities. This is all the evidence the prosecution had after almost six years of building a cresendo for the upcoming trial? I am not impressed. If they were so certain a crime was committed then there is NO way the woman should've been given immunity. If this was all about justice then both parties should've been charged. PERIOD! These self righteous folks have run with nothing more than an assertion of it being R Kelly in the video and have passed judgement on him as if they've lived an exemplary lifetime and have received the blessing of their God to call someone elses behavior into question. I wonder if they are as critical of their own behavior! I'd be willing to bet not. They've made comparisons of his marriage to Aaliyah as evidence that he is a pedophile. First of all it's like comparing apples and oranges. If he married Aaliyah then how does it compare with him allegedly having sex with an underage girl? It shows he had tried to do right by marrying her rather than just using her as a bedmate. Young girls around the world in lot of countries are married off at age of under 11 depending on the culture and many of them are married off to men older than their fathers who sometimes have many wives. Thirdly, there are grown women who are under developed and physically have the build of a young girl. So who knows if it is a young girl or an older woman who just got shorted out in voluptuousness? No one! What it amounts to is a lot of conjecture on the part of a lot of people based on hearsay. If you choose not to buy his records it is your right to spend your money in any way you see fit. Get over it. One can only hope if they've been accused of a crime with the same pittiance of evidence that the judicial system will work for them in the same manner in declaring them to be not guilty. Now a so-called petition? Hmmmm I wonder where the petitions are when we have members of the clergy molesting our young boys and girls and then getting veil of protection from the church. I am tired of this mess. Move on to something else. sheesh

I think Wanda said it best. We should not judge. Our justice system found him not guilty and just like she said whenever the verdict isn't what we think it is then we go into a rage saying what we will not do. He will have his real day in court and until then if you don't want to support him then don't. Let it go.
