If you'll remember the story, Joe Horn, a 61-year-old Pasadena, Tex., resident spotted two burglars breaking into his neighbor's home in Nov. 2007. He dialed 911, but despite being warned to stay in his home, he declared that he has a right to use deadly force to defend his neighbor's property and that he was going to confront the robbers. He does just that and then shoots them in their backs, killing them. A huge controversy ensued over whether he should stand trial in the deaths of do RiascosDiego Ortiz, 30, and Hernan Torres, 38, both Columbian immigrants.
Yesterday, a grand jury cleared him of all wrongdoing. Score another one for the gun nuts.
On Tuesday, family and activists called the killing "premeditated murder." ...
I'm not defending the two men who robbed the neighbor's home of about $2,000 in jewelry and cash. But was this worth their lives? These men were not armed, and they posed no threat to Horn, although he claims that they came into his yard.
But if you hear the 911 tapes, Horn was warned to stay in his home and let the police handle the issue. He ignored the dispatcher's orders and if you listen to the tapes you'll see that he had every intention of killing those men.
Even though Horn has expressed regret over the incident, there are supporters who swear Horn should have sawed the men's heads off and impaled them on a lamppost at the edge of his driveway. These are the people who I lose sleep over.
These are the people who love guns far more than they love anything else and are waiting for their chance to kill someone, and far too often they are looking for a nonwhite in order to get their chance. For example, the 1992 killing of Yoshihiro Hattori, a 16-year-old Japanese exchange student in Baton Rouge, La., who simply rang the wrong doorbell when looking for a Halloween party. The homeowner, Rodney Peairs, opened fire on Hattori, mortally wounding him. Peairs was later acquitted under a Louisiana law, similar to one in Texas that allows people to shoot burglars if they feel threatened.
Here's my question: If people like Horn and Peairs -- who are white -- can shoot people they feel threatened by, why is it that John White, a Long Island, N.Y., man -- who is black -- gets a jail term for defending his home when he thought a mob was coming to harm his son, which also resulted in a death.
None of the losses of life are right. The deaths are senseless, and could have been avoided if cooler heads had prevailed. But in Horn's case, he had no intention of calming down. He took the law into his own hands and now, with a Supreme Court gun decision having just passed, every firearm freak in the country will feel emboldened.
Well, here's what I have to say to them: a person who would shoot someone because they feel a gun empowers them is a sociopath with a murderous mentality. It has nothing to do with self defense, it is the mark of a weak person who would feel castrated without having a gun somewhere in their vicinity.
Point blank: If you actually love your gun, you're a punk. It takes a man to preserve life. It takes a weakling to snuff it out.
Horn, by his own admission, is an eternal victim of his weak moment.

I guess they would still be alive if they weren't there robbing the place and back in south america where they belonged. I wouldn't care if they were white, black, or any other race or nationality, if my state had a law like that and I saw someone robbing my neighbors house I would try to stop them and if they threatened me I would shoot. If you're not a criminal you don't have anything to worry about.

As a resident of texas, and gun owner, I must say the responce of the public to a man defending his neighbors property as it were his own stuns me. Should we, as law abiding, tax paying get up and go to work people simply lay down and let ourselves be robbed, because it's unseemly to shoot a person of color, illegal alien douchebag? What if the family being robbed would have been black? Does that change things? The reality is, if you don't want to get shot, don't break into homes in texas. Us white folks are inhumane? Good lord, people of color have such a steller record of humane behaivior. Black tribesmen sell other Africans off as slaves and it's white europeans fault. One black guy gets his ass kicked and you burned down your own neighborhood. Good thing korean business owners had a gun or two lying around or there would have been no place to buy forties the next day. One big black dude kills his white wife and another white guy and gets his black ass arrested and it's racism. Anytime a mexican or a african(american) gets caught it's blame whitey. Well, in Texas, whitey got a gun, and knows how to use it.

I find the reference in blog "White folks are so inhumane, it makes my skin crawl" a sign of a very stupid uniformed person.
This just shows how racist, mean and generalized haters some people are. You made a grand statement of how all us white folks are so inhumane.. Most of the world greatest crusaders of social justice and peace are white. The best allies blacks have in this world are liberal left leaning white people. Obama had massive white support and pulled many right leaning voters into his camp...
Maybe you forget that without White support Civil Rights would have failed.
What if the shooter was black and two men killed were white? Would your heart bleed mercy for those men then? What if the men were black and the shooter was black? Would that change every thing.. The issue for you is race and blind empathy because they were brown skinned. Do you believe All brown skin people are helpless victims that have no mind of their own because us 'evil' white people made that way? It should also be noted those two men were in the US illegally and breaking our laws.. It amazing how anyone could have such compassion for men who show no respect of of our laws or show mercy for their victims. My view here is you lust for revenge, violence and just want to pick a fight with whites.... Get a brain!!!

This puffy, rosey-cheek, trigger-happy idiot should be put behind bars. He shot those two men in the back in cold blood. He was TOLD to stay inside of his home, but ofcourse Ol' Big Bad Bart had to PROVE how big and bad he was and defend someone else's property! He did the right thing by calling 911. That is where it should have ended. IF those criminals came into HIS yard with the intent to rob, then and only then should he have blown them to smitherines! But, as usual this rosey cheek, trigger-happy Bart felt "threatened" and therefore given the red light to commit murder, and let off the hook for it.
So typical...

Good lord, people of color have such a steller record of humane behaivior.
(And, ofcourse people of "no color" have been the epitome of humane behavior all over the globe. Afterall, every place on earth they have treaded, they didn't leave a trail of murder, rape, disaster and confusion on whatever land they stepped on)
Black tribesmen sell other Africans off as slaves and it's white europeans fault.
(OLD argument used by Whites that don't wash for the educated. Slavery in Africa was designed as such: A more powerful tribe who conquered smaller tribes took the conquered tribal people as slaves, yet the conquered tribes were not forbidden to marry, to live as FREE men and women within the confines of the more powerful tribe and they were not castrated, burned in oil, hung, raped, etc. Their children were not torn away from their mother's breasts and sold away. The only thing a conquered tribe was not allowed to do was to leave and return to their former tribe. There is no history of inhumane treatment of human beings as slaves that can match that of slavery in America. Try again..)
One black guy gets his ass kicked and you burned down your own neighborhood.
(IF Black people could have come to YOUR neighborhood and burned it down, they would have. Just like how YOU would come to our neighborhoods and bomb and burn down our homes and churches for hundreds of years, remember? KILLING countless African American people, men, women, and children. Remember? Ofcourse, NOTHING would happen to YOU for doing it? Remember? The 'mob mentality' only protects a privaledged race of people who are actually 'mobsters', remember? Just think how peachy it would have been if Whites who believed their slut was raped by "Black Joe Brown" across the tracks took out their frustrations by burning down THEIR OWN neighborhoods and left "Black Joe Brown" and all other males who looked like him alone? After all, they already KNOW that "Black Joe Brown" wasn't guilty to begin with...remember those type of situations?)
Good thing korean business owners had a gun or two lying around or there would have been no place to buy forties the next day.
(Good thing the country feed store down the street had enough tobacco to go around for the mob after they came back from the woods watching INNOCENT "Black Joe Brown" hung and burned alive from a tree with his scrotum stuffed in his mouth.)
One big black dude kills his white wife and another white guy and gets his black ass arrested and it's racism.
(One big white dude kills his black mistress and another black guy she'd rather be with and gets to go back to his trailer and cuddle up with his white wife)
Anytime a mexican or a african(american) gets caught it's blame whitey.
(If the shoe fits, wear it. If it don't, keep on stepping.)
Well, in Texas, whitey got a gun, and knows how to use it.
(Well, not only in TEXAS, blackey has a gun NOW, and knows how to use it....and get this....WILL use it. I bet that scares the hell out of you, huh?)

You're right, John White should have been acquitted. Did he appeal? I would hope he appealed and the appellant court overturned the conviction. It certainly sounds like a justified shooting to me.
Oh, for the record. I'm a white gun nut, just the kind of person you so obviously hate.

Dearest Jen, In Texas, I have the RIGHT to protect MY property AND that of MY neighbors. Joe was completely within his right to blast these two illegal invader criminals straight to he//. I love the personal responsibility conferred by these laws. No one begged these illegal invaders of our Country to become thieves. Justice was served.
PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE AMMUNITION

I have mixed feelings about your position. Let me first establish my own by saying that I am a Texas resident and a gun owner. While I am in agreement with the current self defence laws in place here, (the Texas Castle doctrine)I also agree with your belief that Joe Horne should not have shot those men. Mr. Horne, or anyone else for that matter, should have the right to defend ones property or that of ones neighbor, but where Mr. Horne commited the error and arguably a crime is when he left his own home to confront the robbers. It would have been one thing had he been over at the neighbors house sitting or spending the night or what have you, but after calling 911 he should have left the task to law enforcement professionals instead of going outside to confront them. Despite all of this however, the shooting of those men still might have been justified if those men were brandishing a weapon or charging at him or doing anything that would have put his life in emminent danger. As it turns out though, the two men were apparently shot in the back....I dont really see how two fleeing robbers posed such a threat to a man armed with a shotgun. In the unfortunate case of John White I dont think you should be so quick to pull the proverbial race card. Any perceived diparity or racial inequity could likely be attributed to the different laws in place in New York in regards to self defence and firearms possession. Remember the case of Bernie Goetz where although he was aquitted of anywrong doing aside from illegal weapons possession (the incident was determined to be a self defence senario)he was still successfully sued in civil court by one of his assailants. (the jury awarded the kid 43 million dollars in damages) I think Mr. White had every right to defend his house and child from that racist mob, and that little prick who got shot shouldnt have been lunging at a man with a gun, but I dont think he was convicted because of a black versus white issue.( especially in New York were everyone there is SO smart and SO progressive...haha)Unfortunately for him he didn't take into account NY's less than friendly attitude towards firearms possession before walking out of his house.
