After the votes were counted in the 9th Congressional District Democratic primary election, Cohen's closest challenger, attorney Nikki Tinker, was singing the blues. In a rematch of their 2006 primary race, she found out that Cohen still was not someone to be, well, tinkered with. Cohen handily defeated Tinker 79 percent to 19 percent.
In a racially-charged campaign, Tinker tried to link Cohen to the Ku Klux Klan. She also released an attack ad that many believed used racial code to smear the Jewish Cohen as anti-Christian.
Tinker's race-baiting attracted national attention and widespread criticism. Barack Obama, the de facto head of the Democratic Party, said in a statement:
These incendiary and personal attacks have no place in our politics, and will do nothing to help the good people of Tennessee. It's time to turn the page on a politics driven by negativity and division so that we can come together to lift up our communities and our country.Indeed, the community came together in Memphis and kicked Nikki Turner to the curb – again. In declaring victory, Cohen said:
It says Memphis has come a long, long way and that people who were counting on racial voting to prevail are thinking of a Memphis that doesn't exist anymore. The people of Memphis are more sophisticated voters that deal with issues and someone's record and not simply race. They are also dancing in the street in another music city. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sent to jail yesterday for violating the terms of his release bond. Kilpatrick faces perjury, obstruction of justice and other felony charges stemming from an affair with his former chief of staff.

"Memphis Race Baiter," guess that sums up the authors opinion. Another racist article.

Actually Q, this wasn't your traditional article on race. Here was a young black woman using race against an older white man. Normally the situation would be reversed. Memphis rejected her and her tactics handily.

I'm in Memphis and I'm black. Tinker was a dirty fighter and that turned me off about her. Cohen has proved what he can do and all she spoke about were the problems...no solutions or remedies. This is not a racist article. The girl thought her blackness would win her the election. It was very obvious to us and it didn't work. Get it together Tinker. This is 2008. We want the right person in there...white or black.

I agree with Mr.Leo. I am an afrocentric man. But Ms. Tinker in a televised debate had no clear problem with Cohen's voting record. She basically ran an 'I am Black, and I am Christian' campaign. She never had a platform other than waiting on the porch as a child looking for the postman to bring her grand mother's Social Security check. Now that I type that out that is actually an insult; as if we need a congressman to help us get checks. (iknow that Soc. Sec. is an honorable thing unlike Welfare) I am 41 for over 30 years in Memphis (TN -9) we had either Harold for Sr 20 years or Jr. 10 years. I honestly dont know how to judge them as congressmen. I would love to have a Black Representive in this district, but i want a GOOD QUALIFIED Black person, not someone who shows up every two years to run. Put out a record this time TINKER

Nikki Tinker should start a campaign to win a city council or a school board seat and work her way up the political ladder, she should'nt rely on the fact that Cohen is white so go after his seat.We can't afford to say that here in Tenneesse with 2 white *REPUBLICAN* U.S. senators. Shelby county (largest in TN.)could'nt even push Harold Ford Jr. to a win a U.S. senate seat. See we Afican Americans here in Memphis are ununited and somewhat silly at times so she was just letting everybody in on our dirty secret. Our people are best at shooting, robbing and killing so thanks Nikki great job on saying things that don't matter.

Nikki Tinker should run for a city council/school board seat and work her way up the political ladder instead of going after Cohen seat just because he's white.Tinker just let everybody see how silly some of our people are focusing on "bad white America" actions instead of working on ideas of trying to stop our people from killing and robbing each other. Cohen has worked very hard in our community and should have pulled in 100% of the vote.

White U.S. Rep. Bob Brady of Pennsylvania, like-wise represents a predominately black district in Philadelphia. And black voters have like-wise rejected appeals by black candidates for that seat solely along racial lines.

As a black Memphian, it was sickening to witness the "usual" political propoganda regarding race/religion. As an educated member of our society, I make my choices of candidates just as I make my personal purchases. I tend to buy based on quality, reputation and perceived longevity of use. I acknowledge the "swagger" of Ms. Tinker, but perhaps this was fruit ripened before its time. Mr. Cohen has not only been a positive staple in the city of Memphis, but a leader among leaders. I hope that Ms. Tinker will join forces with Mr. Cohen and work to collectively unite the city. Perhaps Ms. Tinkers true claim to fame is yet to come. Let's stay focused. goodtimein901@aol.com

While I don't live in Memphis, I vigorously supported Nikki Tinker over Steve Cohen, not only because that district is predominantly black and should be represented by a black, but because we need all of the black representation that we can get in Congress. And Memphis is the only area in this state where it's possible to elect a black Congressperson. Also, Cohen is Jewish, and therefore totally opposed to Jesus and Christianity. Which far too many blacks are not even aware of. Perhaps you all can take on the subject of the Jews hatred, or dislike, of Jesus. If you all are not too "chicken" to do so, as just about all media across this nation, black, white and otherwise. Jews don't believe in the trinity, nor the virgin birth, the resurrection, or the second coming. And in Israel they are known to often spit on Christians, and when coming into the presence of a cross and a Christian house of worship. But, then, you aren't going to step forward and talk, nor even whisper, about any of this either, to put forth the truth to black people. So they'll have to wait on the book that I am in the midst of writing. - - - Rev. George Brooks of Murfreesboro, TN. (615) 494-9056
