Early reviews have pronounced it funny! As you may know, Robert Downey Jr. plays a white actor who takes a role originally written for a black actor and dyes his skin to play the role as a black man. Confusing? Yes. But there is method to his madness.
Downey Jr.'s character does all this in hopes of winning an Oscar. But it's all kind of zany so I wouldn't expect one in real life Iron Man.
'Zoolander' was great so while reading about 'Tropic Thunder' the first time I laughed out loud and felt queasy at the same time.
Race Role Reversals
Robert Downey Jr. in "Tropic Thunder"
Downey plays Kirk Lazarus, an Oscar winner who transforms into a black man to portray a Vietnam solder in this film within the film.
Robert Downey Jr. in "Tropic Thunder"
The Iron Man actor tells MTV that he owes the inspiration for the character to his director dad who made blaxploitation film nearly 40 years ago called "Putney Swope."
Ted Danson in Black Face
Back in 1993 Ted Danson appeared in blackface at a Friars Club roast in honor of his friend Whoopi Goldberg.
Ted Danson in White Face
Whoopi tried to silence his critics, saying tasteless, vulgar humor was expected at the roast. "I helped plan it!" she said.
C. Thomas Howell in "Soul Man"
Howell played a white student who used "tanning pills" to be black and win a minority Harvard Law scholarship.
C. Thomas Howell in "Soul Man"
The flick was the poorly received in black communities to say the least. Some today say it's classic, but during its release it came off as mockery to the hot issue of affirmative action.
Wayans Brothers in "White Chicks"
Shawn and Marlon Wayans play two FBI agents who do a race and gender bender to go undercover and foil a kidnapping plot.
Wayans Brothers in "White Chicks"
The Wayans brothers looked, well, gross as chicks. Please don't let there be a sequel or a "Black Chicks."
Eddie Murphy in "Coming To America"
Murphy employs one of his best characters in this comedy classic as Saul, the Jewish man in the barber shop. "What about Rocky Marciano?"
Eddie Murphy in "Coming To America"
Murphy is a master of disguise comedy. And Saul in the barbershop is one of the best race role reversals of them all.
From Entertainment Weekly Online:
If you don't recognize that African-American actor standing between Jack Black and Ben Stiller, there's a good reason: He's white. In Tropic Thunder, an epic action comedy co-written and directed by Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam War film ever. Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, um, authentically. Funny? Sure. Dangerous? That's an understatement. ''If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago,'' Downey says. ''If you don't do it right, we're going to hell.''
Here's a favorite comment from various threads about 'Tropic Thunder':
James says: "...This is not Blackface. Blackface is a makeup style intended to demean us Black folks. With the over sized white lips and such. This is a white man in make up making him look black. There is nothing wrong here, at least judging by the still photo. I'm not a fan of Ben Stiller, so I'm sure there is content that would offend me if I actually see this movie. As far as Downey's role being funny, the original queation, has a lot to do with how the character is played. If it's played like Jimmy Walker in fatigues then I wouldn't find it funny at all."The protest against 'Tropic Thunder' comes not from the Downey Jr's character but the fact that Stiller's character tosses around the offensive term "retard" to insult a character named "Simple Jack" and also uses it as generic term of derision. As one blogger points out, "It must have taken a lot of courage to make fun of people who can't fight back."
WILL YOU SEE TROPIC THUNDER?

GO SEE THE MOVIE BEFORE MAKING A JUDGEMENT!!!
One of the things I hate about this country is how quickly we judge. As a country we say things like "I'm grown" and we make uninformed decisions.
The INTENT of his Robert Downey's character is to poke fun at Hollywood's obsession with narcissim and fame. It's not about being 'black face' because his role isn't to be a caricature of post-modern Blacks.
THIS IS NOT BLACK FACE.

Personally I find many of the roles Christ Tucker plays to be something akin to black-face. Is it better when a black person plays a stereotype?

All you over sensitive holier-than-thou farts who think this movie is going to have a negative impact and is tied up with some 'rascist movement from the past' are all suckers.
Learn to use your own mind, don't like it? Don't watch it, it's that simple, it's a MOVIE.
As for the 'retard' comments in the movie: see above.
If you have seen a movie with these guys in it before and slap an 'R' rating on it, what would you expect?

i agree with number 13.
i also think it is stupid to call someone a moron because Ben Stiller is a democrat. We all know that no matter what political party you belong to you can still have opinions and lifestyles that may not coincide with the rest of the members of said party. There are homosexual republicans and racist democrats.
Speaking of homosexuals, no one seems to get sensitive over the negative portrayal of homosexuals in cinema. I recently watched an older movie called "Mannequin" in which there is a black homosexual man who goes by the name "Hollywood"
He was a completely NEGATIVE portrayal of a homosexual man. But was there a huge hullaballoo concerning this? I don't believe there was.
The truth is that we all kind of need to... get over it.
Ben Stiller didn't use the n word or portray Robert Downey Jr. in black face being whipped while he picked cotton.
he portrayed an actor making a movie.
and on top of that.
BEN STILLER IS JEWISH.
I know, like I said earlier, just because you belong to one group doesnt mean anything but honestly... do you think that Ben Stiller, a jewish man, would go through all the trouble of making fun of black people because he's racist?
i think you are all looking way to deeply into this.
get over it.
now.

Actually, I really admire this actor and his work. He has proved to be very talented and worth of the roles he has received until now. I am sure that he will receive the Oscar one day. He just has to work harder and have faith.

Al Jolsen in blackface almost 100 years ago singing "Mammy" made "White Chicks" necessary.
The point here is would it have been possible for Murphy, Chappelle, or even Spike Lee to have existed 50 years ago? For those who are mindless enough to have to think on the answer, you do have plenty other things in your life to deal with, and you better get busy.
What can be accomplished if no-talented asses like Downey jr. And Stiller think that using racial strife as a marketing ploy is a good thing to do.
Five years from now when the racial situation in America has worsened because we haven't the good sense to quit fucking with the character traits which are indigenous to others unlike ourselves, who will we blame?
Not these guys, you see they are never on the frontlines of anything, or ever in the position to have to pay anything for the advances over which they constantly take advantage.
However, they will always figure out a way to collect from those advances. Remind you of anyone?

The aforementioned gentlemen were using the strife they have witnessed and experienced to send the message about how it feels to be on the receiving end of racism. Therefore they hope to affect a message to us all about the pain and suffering caused when we allow race to be used as a qualifier in a de-mockery.
A mission they are qualified to undertake because of their life experiences and the experiences of their ancestors. Downey Jr. and Stiller are hereby fudging their respective resumes and preaching to the choir, for profit.
