Early reviews have pronounced it funny! As you may know, Robert Downey Jr. plays a white actor who takes a role originally written for a black actor and dyes his skin to play the role as a black man. Confusing? Yes. But there is method to his madness.
Downey Jr.'s character does all this in hopes of winning an Oscar. But it's all kind of zany so I wouldn't expect one in real life Iron Man.
'Zoolander' was great so while reading about 'Tropic Thunder' the first time I laughed out loud and felt queasy at the same time.
Race Role Reversals
Robert Downey Jr. in "Tropic Thunder"
Downey plays Kirk Lazarus, an Oscar winner who transforms into a black man to portray a Vietnam solder in this film within the film.
Robert Downey Jr. in "Tropic Thunder"
The Iron Man actor tells MTV that he owes the inspiration for the character to his director dad who made blaxploitation film nearly 40 years ago called "Putney Swope."
Ted Danson in Black Face
Back in 1993 Ted Danson appeared in blackface at a Friars Club roast in honor of his friend Whoopi Goldberg.
Ted Danson in White Face
Whoopi tried to silence his critics, saying tasteless, vulgar humor was expected at the roast. "I helped plan it!" she said.
C. Thomas Howell in "Soul Man"
Howell played a white student who used "tanning pills" to be black and win a minority Harvard Law scholarship.
C. Thomas Howell in "Soul Man"
The flick was the poorly received in black communities to say the least. Some today say it's classic, but during its release it came off as mockery to the hot issue of affirmative action.
Wayans Brothers in "White Chicks"
Shawn and Marlon Wayans play two FBI agents who do a race and gender bender to go undercover and foil a kidnapping plot.
Wayans Brothers in "White Chicks"
The Wayans brothers looked, well, gross as chicks. Please don't let there be a sequel or a "Black Chicks."
Eddie Murphy in "Coming To America"
Murphy employs one of his best characters in this comedy classic as Saul, the Jewish man in the barber shop. "What about Rocky Marciano?"
Eddie Murphy in "Coming To America"
Murphy is a master of disguise comedy. And Saul in the barbershop is one of the best race role reversals of them all.
From Entertainment Weekly Online:
If you don't recognize that African-American actor standing between Jack Black and Ben Stiller, there's a good reason: He's white. In Tropic Thunder, an epic action comedy co-written and directed by Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam War film ever. Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, um, authentically. Funny? Sure. Dangerous? That's an understatement. ''If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago,'' Downey says. ''If you don't do it right, we're going to hell.''
Here's a favorite comment from various threads about 'Tropic Thunder':
James says: "...This is not Blackface. Blackface is a makeup style intended to demean us Black folks. With the over sized white lips and such. This is a white man in make up making him look black. There is nothing wrong here, at least judging by the still photo. I'm not a fan of Ben Stiller, so I'm sure there is content that would offend me if I actually see this movie. As far as Downey's role being funny, the original queation, has a lot to do with how the character is played. If it's played like Jimmy Walker in fatigues then I wouldn't find it funny at all."The protest against 'Tropic Thunder' comes not from the Downey Jr's character but the fact that Stiller's character tosses around the offensive term "retard" to insult a character named "Simple Jack" and also uses it as generic term of derision. As one blogger points out, "It must have taken a lot of courage to make fun of people who can't fight back."
WILL YOU SEE TROPIC THUNDER?

No will not see it! This is obsurd! There are plenty of African-American or Latino actors looking for work. There is no reason for this. The movie is not about a "White" person pretending to be "Black". If that were the case, then it would be OK! But if this movie is supported, Hollywood would only continue this nonsense.....

People need to quit tripping, We African Americans has turned the tables in making fun of " white people " in movies and in stand up comedy..
The movie featuring Morton Downey Jr, displaying a militant black man in the military was funny..David Chappele and Eddie Murphy makes a kill'n in spoofing white folks in comedy sketches and in movies..If folks are offended they have a choice..Number one, turn the channel, and don't pay to go to that particular movie..
At times we as African Americans are total hypocrites when it comes to " political incorrectness" and issues regarding society. We will call a white person out in a heartbeat, but let a white person flip the script and we will call them racist and insensitive.Ben Stiller had the right to cast a character of a black man, being played by a white man. And Morton did a great job, if I didnt know him, I would have thought he was "Black " from the south "Louisiana " with his "southern slang"...lol..
And in this case we are talking about entertainment and the right to express yourself either in music, motion pictures, or any other art form regarding entertainment..Where are my fellow bro's and sista's in protest when millions of CD's are recorded daily by Rap artist calling one another n**ga's and our women b*tches?..If it wasn't for those words I mentioned.
Rap music would simply disappear and rapper's would probably be singing in the choir..lol...One of my favorites is when Dave Chappele acted out as a blind racist black man who thought he was white..He killed the role with accuracy of how a racist white man would act back in the deep south at a klan rally...
Stereotypes are what they are, sometimes true, sometimes false, but nevertheless when it comes to comedy the gloves comes off..Richard Pryor did this, Redd Fox did this, and every other great Black Comedian/Actor did this without reservation..
Chill out everyone an appreciate the fact we have the right to express ourselves..
Much love...

I commend the person who wrote that Ben Stiller may be a closet racist I found it perculiar how he thought Mary having a black step father was funny in "Something about Mary" then the black face in " Zoolander." He thinks black people are funny as many whites do probably because of sell outs like certain comedians and scared little boys acting like gangsters on all their videos and in everyday life. To that idiot Connor if your people were discriminated against and targeted for extinction like black men are and your community and jobs completely taken over or had other races invited into the u.s. to be take over by whites, mexicans, koreans, and so on, you'd be sensitive too. If your people have been called lazy soo much that many employers won't hire black men and rather hire whites , asians and mexicans over blacks you'd be very sensitive my ignorant friends. And a shout out to all the sell outs who never defend black peoples honor, soon you will see your the only ones left with only a hand full of blacks left on this earth!!

like robert downey said in the article, if they did it right and it is funny, then they will be ok. if people hate the movie, then they are screwed. i don't have any problem with people of different races playing another race, provided there is a REASON why they are doing it. and it is done right. but yes, this is going to boost their sales because people are going to go see the movie out of curiosity, to make up their own minds about it. tom cruise and nick nolte are in it as well, in supporting roles....it's either a hit or a miss, and time is going to tell the story.

I saw the movie yesterday and felt that it was funny. I am a Black woman and I did not find it to be offensive. I consider myself intelligent and open minded. I always enter without preconceived notions. It was silly and made fun of several different topics. I thought Tom Cruise was funny also. With these times in which we live we deserve a good laugh.

Hmmmmm... I love Robert Downey Jr. But I don't like it when a white actor plays a black one, there's something really unsettling about it!
But to answer the question... I probably will not go see it, I'll wait for DVD!

I will not see the movie because there are so many good Black actors looking for work. Insead Ben Stiller decides to have a white actor play a black role?!?... In addition, Robert Downey Jr. was on the Regis and Kelly Live show on friday to intro this film. His said playing the role was "Crazy" and "Disgusting". What does that mean? Plus, has anyone ever since Ben Stiller play a role with a Black actor???

This issue has been blown way out of porportion! There are so many important things going on in our world and people want b**** about a movie. I'm a black girl and I have watched many movies that made fun of white people that I thought was funny. I don't find it neccessary to get but hurt because they died a white man's skin black. It's just good comedy. I don't think that no one should be trying to post comments unless they seen the movie and truely got offended. The white people didn't get offended about the black comedians playing white people. So just eat some popcorn and enjoy some comedy, and don't be so hostile, GEEEZE!

I have not seen the move. However, there seems to be a great deal of disparaging us as individuals and our opinions and perceptions, as oppose to making comments about the movie. Being honest, and hopefully this will not offend anyone, isn’t it rational to judge a movie AFTER it has been seen? Wouldn’t it make more sense to say with certainty a movie is supporting racism or an actor is racist, once you know definitively? In my humble opinion, people in general expend far too much energy voicing emotional opinions rather than doing homework getting the facts and THEN with substantiated evidence formulating an opinion; for or against anything.
Do I think this movie is racist or promotes the degradation of the black people? No. Do I think Stiller took a BIG chance? Most DEFINITELY. However, if the movie is entertaining, and the fine line of genius was walked, honestly I can only say that is the mark of a GREAT acting. It is like walking through a minefield and getting to the other side unscathed. Was it luck? Could be; but remember there are times you only get lucky ONCE.
These are my opinions. I don’t mean to offend anyone; if I did my apologies. Make it a great day.
