Minneapolis-St. Paul -- Teen pregnancy is a problem in our society.
A recent report shows that teen pregnancy rates have gone up from 21 births per 1,000 teenage girls in 2005 to 22 per 1,000 in 2006, the most recent year for which statistics are available. In recognition of the trend, celebrities such as the Jonas Brothers and Disney dynamo Selena Gomez have grabbed headlines by taking abstinence pledges.
Helping teens resist the temptation of sex, which can result in unwanted pregnancies, is part of the agenda of the pro-life Republican party.
Yet, Sunday we learn that GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's unwed 17-year-old daughter Bristol is five months pregnant. ...
According to the Associated Press, Palin and her husband Todd released this statement: "Our beautiful daughter
Of course, the Palins' predicament is a private family matter, but choosing Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate begs this question: Is this the image that the so-called party of family values wants to put front and center?
For his part, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said emphatically, "I think people's families are off limits; and people's children are especially off limits." He said he was offended by the suggestion that his operatives spread the unfounded Internet rumors that Sarah Palin's infant son Trig, who has Down's Syndrome, is actually Bristol's.
Meanwhile, BV took the temperature of people attending the Republican National Convention in St. Paul today.

IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO OIL. MAYBE THE REPUBLICANS THINK PALIN CAN DELIVER ALASKA'S OIL TO ANOTHER NO CONTEST BID FOR HALLIBURTON (THE COMPANY THAT DICK CHENEY WAS CEO OF BEFORE HE BECAME V-P). THERE HAS TO BE AN OIL-AFFILIATED COMPANY SOMEWHERE IN THIS UNBELIEVABLE CHOICE FOR VICE PRESIDENT. THE BUSH ADMINISTRATIONS REPUBLICANS WENT AFTER THE OIL IN IRAQ; NOW IT'S TIME TO GO AFTER THE OIL IN ALASKA. EXXON MOBIL NEEDS MORE MONEY TOO. I BET THERE IS LAUNDERING OF MONEY SOMEWHERE IN ALL THESE OIL EXPLOITATIONS BY REPUBLICANS. AND, INCIDENTALLY, HALLIBURTON WHOSE MAJOR BUSINESS IS OIL PIPELINES, NOW HAS THEIR MAIN HEADQUARTERS IN THE MIDDLE EAST IN DUBAI, VERY CLOSE TO IRAQ. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE THEM TO SET UP HEADQUARTERS IN ALASKA?
MAYBE I AM TOO CYNICAL, BUT I CAN THINK OF NO OTHER REASON FOR CHOOSING PALIN AS A V-P.

Poor Blacks and Hispanics (and poor whites) have been having kids out of wedlock for years...and ALWAYS condemned for it. ++++++++++ Now a nice upper middle class white girl is preggo...and such an outpouring of empathy and understanding...from the religous right...+++++++++ Yes folks, the RELIGIOUS RIGHT is allowing for a mistake without condemnation..... If it had been some Democrat's daughter...(the slut should have kept her legs closed...and deserves to suffer for her lack of morals...AND her father/parent is an unworthy aspiring candidate for allowing it.).....

I am deeply saddened and horrified that people would take two very difficult thins that do not discriminate such as a child born with a terrible genetic disorder and teenage pregnancy that is an epidemic problem and politicize them. Just when I thought things could not degenerate any further. Good Lord, people there are babies. If a Republican suggested that a woman belongs at home because she has five children, they would be assasinated. The same about a child who has Downe's syndrome. Do you relize how sexist and discriminatory this sounds. How limiting this sounds. Does this not go against everything that Obama preaches? ...living the American dream.
And then to say that she has no family values and is a hypocrite because she had a child with Downe's syndrome and then chooses to continue her desire to serve?
Ot the family has no family values becasue her teeneage daughter got pregnant. Isn' that one of the glass ceilings that Democrats were supposed to have shattered...not to shame an entire family as lacking family values because the daugter got pregnant. Are Democrats pro-choice so they can pressure their daughters to get an abortion to avoid shaming he family.
Seeing what is going on and the hypocrisy of Democrats makes me sure why it is that I am a Repulican. Barack knows better than his supporters. You all need somone to lead you and should be ashamed of yourselves. You sexism and discrimination is pathetic.

Response to Paul E., Bill Clinton was wrong for his actions and now you want to slam Michelle Obama for being a beautiful, smart women??? Then you call Barack Obama Barack Hussein Obama!? Seems you have a misguided sense of values yourself for not respecting the man's name or his wife and you wish folks not talk about Palin??? And then you call yourself a Christian???

RESPONSE TO #18: Love the emphasis on "Hussein" Obama. I guess Barack should be flogged and denigrated for the name GIVEN TO him, but Bristol Palin should receive a pass for her IMMORAL ACT. Way to spin that one, Ann.
**** NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN! ****

Barack Obama has the intinteligence, experience,& education, to lead our country as President of the United Stateas. His choice of Biden for Vuce President shows all of the above. Barack Obama want the best for our country.
Michelle Obama- will be a first Lady to be proud of she also has the education and is a role model for the women of today.
McCain's choice for S. Palin for VP was a desperate act. Just think of Palin having to step up and become the President of the United States in an emergency .

This really shows a flaw of CHARACTER and JUDGMENT -- what parent would put their 17-year-old through this??!! I thought Palin was an understandable pick to mobilize the base for McCain, but I can't understand why anyone would accept the nomination, cover the girl up with baby blanket up on stage during the announcement, obviously to hide her belly, then let this story blow up around them?
I agree that a teen pregnancy is a private matter, but the girl's parents should be the first to respect the need for privacy. Come to think of it, the conservatives have never believed in a right of privacy!!
Once again, the Republican party shows that it expects impeccable "family values" only from its opponents. Think back on the scandalous "family values" of McCain chasing the young Cindy while he was still married to injured Wife #1; the Reagans who were estranged at one time or the other from nearly every one of their children/stepchildren, the philandering Newt Gingrich, just to name a few. What hypocrisy!
If the Palins truly believed in "Family First," the Governor would have decided to abandon "Ambition First" and declined the nomination. This is a time when a family circles the wagons and takes care of each other above all else.
