It was out with the old and in with the new on Friday, in Motown, as Ken Cockrel Jr. was sworn in as the temporary mayor of Detroit. The 42-year-old Democrat "officially" became the city's chief executive at 12:01 a.m. Friday. Cockrel, a former newspaper reported who was also president of the city council, has also hired a former federal prosecutor to be his deputy mayor along with picking a police chief.
"This is our time for hope and also for renewal," Cockrel said. "It's our time to breathe life back into the city."
The difficult task now for Cockrel is getting residents to once again trust their city government.
Detroit can now put the former mayor's Kwame Kilpatrick's scandals behind them, which include the sexually suggestive text messages to top aide Christine Beatty and perjury among many other charges.
"From this moment on, the past is the past," Cockrel said after the ceremony. "Because of the events of the past several months, it's critical that we find closure, mend our wounds, treat our bumps and our bruises and heal as a city."

Thank the Lord I dont live in Detroit. Funny how cockrels cronies in the media helped him attain mayorship. Kwame wasnt perfect no man is. He was being punished for his ignorance, arrogance and lying on the stand. Detroit didnt stand up for integrity, they sat down and let someone remove him, instead of removing the person they so overwhelmingly voted for. cockrel has been planning and scheming for the longest, and hopefully he will get what he gave. No man, and I mean no man is perfect, they , we all have faults. When you vote for someone to be in an office its your vote, not for a governor to come over and take over. When the black community decides to take over their own destiny , then and only then will they have integrity, honor, and respect. When your underhanded your repaid in as such. But good luck detroit, lol.

Originally from Detroit, that city will forever remain as "my home town". I grew up not far from the Motown home on West Grand Blvd...later moving to the 7 MI and VanDyke area (not far from Osborn High School).
Although I worked for three decades as a Humanitarian Aid Relief Coordinator and Educator for First responders...this allowed me entrance into numerous nations across four continents: it was my time growing up that formed my world view. I wrote much about this on my blog. One post in particular titled "An Awakening to A World of Injustice"...will let you know about the teachers I was fortunate to have in Detroit. I learned at age nine: Every life touches every other life. This is a truth, I wish everyone would hold within their hearts.
Detroit now has a brand new start! Yet, my heart aches for the folks that were there in the midst of this turmoil and scandal. Did it give our beautiful city a bad name across other parts of our nation? Yes, it did. Thankfully, many of us former Detroiters are spread all over the nation and could stand up and say "Don't count us out!"
Just as Senator Obama has had as his campaing slogan from the beginning..."Change"...true change came to our beloved Detroit and it was BEFORE election day.
May God's wisdom and favor cover Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr and his administration and his family.
Kindest Regards,
Michelle
