If you tuned into every major network tonight, you saw the first ever debate between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. But what was built up to be the political "rumble in Mississippi" between the veteran McCain and the newcomer Obama, was all hype and short on delivery. The suspense of whether John McCain would show up, if he was afraid to debate, and if Obama be would ready to slay, were answered in the first five minutes.
Both men began with their prepared speeches, almost oblivious to the questions coming from PBS host and moderator Jim Lehrer. However, the themes of the night, which were foreign policy and national security, soon took center stage, with each man laying out their differences and similarities.
On the economy, Obama and McCain both agree that any bailout plan for Wall Street should include greater oversight and transparencies, and not include "golden parachutes" for executives who ran their companies into the ground. Obama would also add help for homeowners, while McCain wants loans for struggling businesses. Interesting to note was when McCain seemed to backtrack on saying he'd fire the head of the SEC. Now, he claims he would simply call for his resignation; that is, of course, because the President doesn't have the authority to fire him.
Then, it was on to the war in Iraq: a war Obama opposed and McCain supported. While Obama pointed out that the terrorists who attacked us on 9-11 are thriving in Afghanistan while we battle in Iraq, McCain asserted that the surge worked, four years into the conflict. He refused to concede that it was a war in the wrong country, or to acknowledge that the 4,000 soldiers lost and 30,000 others wounded were victims of his failed judgment and decision to support the wrong war.
When asked what lessons could be learned from the war, Obama said, "We should never hesitate to use military force, but we have to use it wisely," while McCain said, "You cannot have a failed strategy that almost causes you to lose a conflict." McCain more concerned with winning and losing, Obama with choosing the right fight.
So, were there any fireworks? Actually, there were a few when the men differed on government spending, earmarks, taxes, health care and education. There were also some when each accused the other of being out of touch on these issues.
If anything was learned from the debates, it was that both men still have a lot more to say. Hopefully, next time they will say it with a bit more fire in their bellies.

Well, I would just like to say that McCain may have been a bit cock coming to the debate, because foreign affairs was supposed to be his line of expertise, or he was under his grandparents perspective that was passed down to him that Black folks have different brains that are less intellgent than Whites and he thought he would put Obama under the table with his superior brain of knowledge what ever the reason he was mistaken and Obama showed once again he would make a far better President. Also, what stood out to me was how hospitable and confident Obama was. He came in with a great hand shake and he kept great eye contact. McCain acted like he was either afraid to look Obama in the eyes (which says valumes about McCain character and professionalism and ability to lead in these diverse times)and perhaps says a lot about how he feels about people of color in general.
These above issues may not be the most of political scrutany, but it tells ALOT about a person deep inside, in my opinion.

I want to see Obama bring the point home as to the fact that this keeps talking about victory in Iraq, while allowing our true enemy to go free, Osama Bin Laden. Keep reitering this fact, over and over and over again. Keep talking about what deregulation means. It means that the rich were allowed to rob us blind, while we had absolutely no protection, not even from the Consumer Protection agency.
I want Obama to speak more on the fact that the U.S. went to war against a country who supposedly had "weapons of mass destruction" when in fact they did not and who lied about that and why didnt we leave when we found it to not be so. I want him to talk about the high cost of EVERYTHING that cause so many not to consume, and why if the manufacturers have moved the jobs overseas because the workers cost less, but the prices we pay cost more. Stop letting John McCain lie on you and make him look at you. Dont let him treat you like a second class citizen. Fight!

Sidebar: The stage lighting (whether intentionally or not) made Obama appear darker in complexion than he is in actuality. In person, Obama has a sun-kissed, golden tan complexion. Last night, he appeared several shades darker...
Time magazine did the same thing when they put OJ Simpson on the cover when he was being tried for the double murder of his wife and her friend. The darker complexion is subconsiously linked to criminality by many whites. Time magazine had done another cover of OJ when he was the darling of media -- star athlete and aspiring actor. On this earlier cover, he appeared at least 8 shades lighter than the subsequent cover when he was being tried for murder. I am not the only one who noticed this "darkening" of Obama. Little things can be done to subliminally implant negative thought into the psyche of viewers and voters. I just wonder if this was indeed orchestrated by McCain's group of thugs. Hmm? I'm just saying.

15 - it wasn't a 'black' thing... it was McCain's strategy to paint Obama as inexperienced - not black. His handlers told him to pound the point home and he did... ad nauseum. Fortunately, Obama did a fantastic job of deflecting the tactic. He was poised, knowledgeable and very presidential - more so than McSame who stammered, made fun of his age and couldn't look at the camera or Obama. He seemed shifty and uncomfortable to me.

TO BE HONEST BEFORE I REALLY KNEW OR HAD HEARD OF OBAMA, I LIKED JOHN MCCAIN. I HAD EVEN THOUGHT OF VOTEING FOR HIM. BUT I ALSO AGREE THAT IT MADE ME FEEL INSULTED THAT HE KEPT SAYING, "SENATOR OBAMA DOESN'T UNDERSTAND" OR "HE DOESN'T KNOW THE MEANING OF WORDS". HE HAD BETTER CURB THESE REMARKS IN THE NEXT DEBATE OR THE RACE CARD IS GOING TO HIT THE FAN BIG TIME!!!! OBAMA DID A GREAT JOB ALL AROUND AND I SAY THAT HE WON BIG. NEXT TIME JOHN LOOK AT YOUR OPPONENT AND NOT AT YOUR SAME COLOR FRIEND WHO WAS THE MODERATOR AS IF YOU NEEDED TO SEE A FAMILIAR FACE!

MCCAIN WAS LOOKING AT THE MODERATOR LIKE WHITE PEOPLE USED TO DO BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN THEY WERE IN THE COMPANY OF BLACK FOLK. HE NEEDED RE-ASSURANCE THAT HE WAS NOT ALONE WITH THIS BLACK GUY!!!

Barack Obama showed the American people and Republicans that he is ready to lead this great country of ours out of turmoil and restore our standing around the world and to keep the United States safe. He also showed great character and a willingness to connect with the American people. To say the least for John McCain, he seemed so disconnected, angry and unsure of himself and he also stuttered too. For a man that is supposed to be so well versed in foreign policy Obama made him look like a "Clown". Also for anyone watching the debate did you all notice how they shook hands with each other in the beginning and how McCain was all smiles versus the end of the debate when Obama told him good job and he couldn't even extend the gratitude. "McCain A Very Angry Man."

Jeff__________________________ If blacks want to look to someone why is it always the loser? Obama is a empy suit.
Jeff to respond to your comment please don't group us as one. We all do not think alike and for you to even suggesst such a thing just shows you have no character whatsoever. That is your opinion of Obama and my opinion to you is and what does that make McCain? "A Walking Dead Suit". Dude you made me go there. Ignorance Breeds Ignorance. Because you certainly don't sound like a college graduate to me.

McCain as the expert on Iraq HAD NO VICTORY in Debate ONE. OBAMA the "newbie" in WORLD AFFAIRS kept grand daddy McCain in CHECK AND OBAMA flicked from his shoulders with strong comebacks the tired phrase of McCain's mealy-mouthed "you don't understand"!
McCain positioned himself as America's grand daddy and kept saying, "you know me" and I got a "record". I was amused by the grand daddy tale of the "bracelet" McCain lingered on. Obama clipped him immediately afterward with not only his bracelet but the name of the fallen troop whose bracelet he received from the surviving mother. Obama shut up old grand daddy Mc Cain to close the bracelet tale by stating firmly that no fallen hero dies in vain.
It was good too that Obama stated that McCain behaved as if the war in Iraq only started 2007, the surge!
McCain continually outrightly bold-facedly lied on Obama positions and Obama forthrightly and strongly corrected the McCain lies.
The grand daddy McCain tried to tilt the debate by old soldier me-ing it and 35 year old friendships and lies, lies, lies, and the mealy-mouthed repetition of "you don't understand" to Obama WHEN CLEARLY it is grand daddy McCain who understands the 21st century so very insufficiently__what he did and what he thought and where he was 35 years ago are no strategies for confronting what America must do in this 21st Century at home and abroad.
I listened only, I would not subject myself to watching McCain lie through his teeth and trying to mealy-mouth Obama __ a candidate more than the McCain match and not hiding behind introducing tiresome, repetitious verbal "slurs" and "lies" as debate tactics against the opponent. Yes, grand daddy McCain, we "know you" and how you cling to your vp to raise a crowd and spew lies and smears in ADs on Obama to raise your poll numbers.
