Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Sarah Palin went head to head in their first and only vice presidential debate in St. Louis on Thursday, clashing on the economy, energy issues and foreign policy. Here, the candidates greet each other at the start of the highly anticipated showdown.

The debate at Washington University in St. Louis marked the first meeting of the vice presidential candidates. "Can I call you Joe?" Palin asked Biden, who approved.

The stakes were particularly high for Palin, who has served as governor of Alaska for less than two years. Polls show the public has become more skeptical of her ability to handle the vice presidency. Palin made only one obvious stumble, when she twice referred to Gen. David McKiernan, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan, as "Gen. McClellan."

The pressure was less intense for Biden, a veteran of more than 35 years in the Senate.

The economy quickly took center stage, with both candidates weighing in on the financial crisis and the bailout bill awaiting congressional approval. "The economic policies of the last eight years have been the worst economic policies we've ever had," Biden said.

Palin said one way to gauge the economic times would be to attend a child's soccer game and listen to parents. "I betcha you're going to hear some fear," she said.

Later, the tone became more heated when the topic turned to the Iraq war. Biden said that he and Barack Obama will be the administration to end the war and said John McCain had been "dead wrong" about the conflict. "For John McCain there is no end in sight to end this war -- fundamental difference," he said.

Palin countered that Obama's exit plan was essentially "a white flag of surrender in Iraq" at a moment when victory was "within sight." She also said Biden had once supported McCain's view of the war.

Palin got some bad news just before the debate, when an Alaska judge threw out a lawsuit filed by Republicans seeking to stop an abuse-of-power investigation aimed at her. Here, Palin looks on from the side prior to taking the stage.

Jaime Mazi: 182. Bottom line Senator Obama has been in the Senate for one year.NOT READY NOT READY NOT READY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------WENDY: Sen Obama has been in the senate since 2005 to the present (3 years), and has 20 years in the Legislature. In his first year in the U.S. Senate he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included
1. Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law,
2. Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law,
3. Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
4. 2007 Government Ethics Bill, became law,
5. Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
So you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jaime Mazi: I am african american and refuse to do what most african americans are doing giving him my vote based of skin color alone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WENDY: So you say you’re African-American, but I surmise you’re not. No one is twisting your arm to vote for Obama. But listen up, the majority of African Americans are simply voting their CORE, which is Democrat! African-Americans have been voting approximately 90 to 95% Democrat since Roosevelt. Now here you come along and accuse African-Americans of voting based on Sen. Obama’s skin color without knowing FACTS. Shame on you!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jaime: Even with John MCCains age he gets my vote based on experience alone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WENDY: What “experiences” does McCain have? News Flash, being a POW doesn’t qualify as experience.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jaime: I warn America please don't allow Obama to convince otherwise.Obama not experienced enough to get america out of this mess of the last eight years of george bush.CHANGE CHANGE CHANGE NO MAVERICK MAVERICK MAVERICK will bring change for all americans.John MCCAIN has my vote.
Jaime Mazi
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WENDY: You sound like Palin with all that nonsense. Obama has plenty experience. You gave you opinions based on feelings and not on facts. If you’re going to judge someone, measure them right, child. Here are some facts.
Barack Obama
Occidental College - Two years
Columbia University - B.A. Political science with a specialization in international relations.
Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude
(COMPARE TO JOHN MCCAIN)
John McCain
United States Naval Academy - Class rank 894 of 899
Sen. Obama has been educated in history, international relations, world languages, cultures, science, Constitutional law and civics. These are issues a president should know, not to mention he was the president of Harvard Law Review. As stated above, Sen, Obama specialized in international relations. To keep it simple, he has a educational grip on FOREIGN POLICIES.
Now, what exactly are McCain’s experiences?

I think she held her own, and it was a match...However, I wish the McCain Camp would do something about her hair...It's hard to stay focused on what she's saying when her "bangs" get tangled in her eye lashes, and keep bouncing around. Can't someone fix that?

191. Most of you sisters out there are acting like crabs in a barrel. Finally, a presidential candidate has had the courage to pick a woman as a running mate and all I see on this site is hate whitey and opposition to Gov. Palin pouring out of bleeding heart white liberals desperate to show they can vote for a half white who thinks like them. Your're pathetic! If that opportunist Obama had any cajones he would have picked Hillary and been a shoo-in. Rather than eat humble pie he chose to fall on his sword and now he is at the mercy of voters like me and I assure you he can wait till hell freezes over before he get votes from "Blacks Against Obama" like me. I had planned to vote for my beloved sister Mckinney, but my having a mentally challenged child in the family and Gov. Palin promising to be the tip of the spear in dealing with such matters in a McCain Administration, since she has such a child, she won my heart and my vote. In the debate Gov. Palin touched on all matters of the economy, fuel, both wars, and foreign policy. What yall want in a 90 minute debate, a darn Ph. D. dissitation? And to all you nay sayers out there talking about she cut some corners well thats the mark of a savvy politician. Stop nit-picking the bottom of the barrel. Gov. Palin has brought new energy to national politics not seen since the days of Huey Long and later with Harry S. Trumen. She is truly a politician of the people and it will be the people who will carry her into the head of the executive branch as VP and maybe even to the presidency. The polling booths in November will leave a "politically castrated" Obama standing small. Gov. Palin is the kind of woman I've been waiting to see debut on the American scene. I predict the future of American politics belongs to the hands of this woman who has appeared out of the colds of Alaska.

I don't think Obama is quaking in his boots since "Blacks Against Obama" will not be voting for him. Oh, well, the 22 votes from your little group (it's too small to be considered an 'organization') can't hurt Sen. Obama too much. For heaven's sake, you don't even have a website!

Uh, if "Blacks Against Obama" is a legitimate group, why don't they have a website? It’s not a very organized group--poorly orchestrated, to say the least. Surely there's a Kinkos or a print company in your neighborhood that can print-out professional signs for your group--not some handwritten messages on scrap paper. Then again, money is hard to be had when you’re not funded by any real support.
