Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Sarah Palin went head to head in their first and only vice presidential debate in St. Louis on Thursday, clashing on the economy, energy issues and foreign policy. Here, the candidates greet each other at the start of the highly anticipated showdown.

The debate at Washington University in St. Louis marked the first meeting of the vice presidential candidates. "Can I call you Joe?" Palin asked Biden, who approved.

The stakes were particularly high for Palin, who has served as governor of Alaska for less than two years. Polls show the public has become more skeptical of her ability to handle the vice presidency. Palin made only one obvious stumble, when she twice referred to Gen. David McKiernan, the top U.S. general in Afghanistan, as "Gen. McClellan."

The pressure was less intense for Biden, a veteran of more than 35 years in the Senate.

The economy quickly took center stage, with both candidates weighing in on the financial crisis and the bailout bill awaiting congressional approval. "The economic policies of the last eight years have been the worst economic policies we've ever had," Biden said.

Palin said one way to gauge the economic times would be to attend a child's soccer game and listen to parents. "I betcha you're going to hear some fear," she said.

Later, the tone became more heated when the topic turned to the Iraq war. Biden said that he and Barack Obama will be the administration to end the war and said John McCain had been "dead wrong" about the conflict. "For John McCain there is no end in sight to end this war -- fundamental difference," he said.

Palin countered that Obama's exit plan was essentially "a white flag of surrender in Iraq" at a moment when victory was "within sight." She also said Biden had once supported McCain's view of the war.

Palin got some bad news just before the debate, when an Alaska judge threw out a lawsuit filed by Republicans seeking to stop an abuse-of-power investigation aimed at her. Here, Palin looks on from the side prior to taking the stage.

MAVERICK. Can she say anything else?? The United States holds a great number of nationalities and diverse cultuires who do not use and may never have said the word "Maverick." Negotiator, problem solver, but maverick - give me a break. If I hear the word maverick come out of her mouth one more time, I will scream. Sarah Palin is just plain old boring. PLAIN PALIN!

I believe she is a token, she walk like one , talk like one. And I believe she will run out and the true Palin will come out. We need change, not people that will do anything to get ahead.

She (Sarah Palin) is a national joke, white people can be such under preformers and still get good reviews by some. The world is watching America and they see what we are doing. How could you compair Sarah to Joe? America you can win an election and still lose the world, do what you will. After 8 years of George Bush, how could you even think about putting republicans back in power? See the movie W.

Did anyone notice Palin resembled a Chatty Katty doll or a robot - she was programmed, ducked and dodged many questions. That betcha and golly was over the top. She has multiple personalities. If she was forced to answer questions, she would have exploded. I felt she was treated special (like a girl), the questions should have been made to answer and Biden shouldn't have felt he had to tiptoe around her cutesy cutesy, which is what McCain was banking on. The fact she came on the stage guaranteed she'd win, since she made a fool out of herself, the campaign and republicans alike. Presidential and factual hands down Biden won the debate.

Palin is an insult to educated, sophisticated women everywhere. It is painfully obvious from last night's debate that she not only doesn't have foreign or domestic policy skills but she is also ignorant of such policies. The folksy attitude was ingratiating and demeaning for someone playing to the world stage. I can imagine foreign leaders mockery as I write this. She didn't address any issues directly or respond to any questions intelligently and with pertinent information. Biden, on the other hand, was articulate, informative, sophisticated and astute. His responses to the situations in Darfur were impactful and insightful. Her responses to the economic crisis was anything but. My vote is for Obama/Biden team. We need educated men to clean up the mess that "six-pack Bush" has gotten us into!

The fact that Sarah Palin hunts and kills treasured American wildlife shows she is not able to represent a country which needs to be compassionate and humane of all living creatures on this planet. It is shameful that shooting ALaska's native wolves from aircraft is happening, as all other states have banned it, but Sarah Palin pushes for the kill. Where is the peace and humanity of Martin Luther King legacy? Certainly not with killers of wildlife. Wildlife needs protection, especially the dying polar bears, which Palin wants hunted by law. And beluga whales off Alaska are clinging to life as Palin pushes to kill them in order to do offshore drilling. Don't think that human beings are the only ones who live and deserve rights on this earth. Animals, fish, birds and all environment need your protection, NOT destruction, as Palin pushes for.

AND, before I forget, in regards to Obama not having the experience to run the Oval Office, what experience was necessary for Ronald Reagan, a former Hollywood actor? What experience was necessary for Bush, a self-confessed "C" student who smoked marijuana and partied? Obama is a Harvard-educated lawyer with a record of political and community activism. Why is it always that a Black person, no matter how qualified, is considered "less than" by whites with far less qualifications, like Palin? She has an undergrad degree in journalism from a state university...she cannot hold her own with the true professionals and that's why they won't allow the news media a chance with her. Her interview with Katie Couric was a joke and the comedians are still writing dialogue on it. Vote for Obama/Biden!!!

I watched this debate, and yes Sarah didn't come off as stupid as I thought she was, but she didn't answer a lot of the questions that were asked of her, it was as if she thought she was in control of the debate and could do whatever she wanted to. Maybe she is friendly, maybe she is like the average joe, but I could say that about a whole lot of people including myself, my brothers and sisters, my friends and I surely wouldn't want any of them to be running for the vp. It's one things to like somebody because they are like you, but I wouldn't want to vote for somebody to put in the White House like myself or my friends and they are all likeable people. I think Sarah tried to be a little joker a couple of times, I thought this debate was suppose to be serious. Now on the other hand, Joe Biden was as serious as he could be, he even had an emotional part that took me by surprise and I thought that was nice to see a man do something like this, show a little emotion, but did anyone noticed that Sarah Palin, just looked at him and went right on into something else. Now that is a sign of saying, but not saying, whatever.
