'Saturday Night Live' cast non-black actor Fred Armisen to play Senator Obama during its presidential debate skits. I think he does a fine job, but part of me wonders whether SNL producers should have found a black actor for the role.
Over at Citizen Sugar, they've asked a pertinent question: Is this black face? Or is Armisen as "race neutral" as Obama seems to be -- thus making him perfect to play the candidate that seems to transcend race. I am not sure. First 'Tropic Thunder,' now this. It seems that race-bending is all the rage in 2008.
I haven't seen it because I do not watch TV, but it sounds hilarious to me! SNL has a history with race bending performers notably Maya Rudolph who was obviously bi-racial (black/white) she used to tear up the white female characters and celebrities she depicted. Even so, Obama is bi-racial so at least one part of his indentity is a in play. Let's lighten up, people!
Tha answer is simple. It's not black face at all. Black face is black face. It's black paint with pink lipstick, grinning teeth, and incoherent speech. Fred's not doing any of that. Simple as that.
Personally, I don't have a problem with it because, well, he's good at it. In the past he's also portrayed Jesse Jackson and Prince, and he does a number of hispanic characters also. I don't believe in hiring someone specific for that role, and if Tina Fey hadn't been a regular I'm betting they'd have never asked her to come back to play Palin. You have to admit Armison is good.
I don’t like Fred Armisen as Barack Obama on Saturday Night Live. And not because he’s white. He just isn’t very good at portraying the junior senator from Illinois.
And if Obama does win the election, a feat that, by all accounts, looks like a strong possibility, then it means, barring any unforeseen events, that we’ll likely have to put up with Armisen’s thoroughly underwhelming impersonation for the next 4 years - those who watch SNL anyway. Bleh…!
Is he really the best person they’ve got to get the job done? If so, then a search should have been undertaken to find someone more convincing, because he’s certainly not - especially when compared to Tina Fey’s almost dead-on Sarah Palin impersonation.
Granted, Obama doesn’t really have any quirky characteristics that would make him a more entertaining figure to caricature (a good thing IMHO), but I’d like to think that an astute performer may find some ways to exploit all possibilities (black or white).
It's comedy people, Tina Fey is dead on Sarah Palin Lucky for SNL. He does a fine job for SNL. Lighten up you are acting like you know Who? Then you will turn around and talk about how they are responding are you doing the same thing????
I found the skit funny. I don't watch SNL so since I don't know what Fred Armisen really looks like, all I saw was an actor who had the physicality of Sen Obama, so I didn't have a problem with his impersonation.

I think it highlights the lack of diversity on SNL. One black actor and one latino actor in the whole cast. Come on!!! That's why I watch Mad tv.
