According to Editor and Publisher, Tennessee Tribune Publisher Rosetta Miller-Perry says she doesn't mind embarrassing people if it makes them do the right thing. The right thing to do, she argues, is vote in the upcoming presidential election -- so she's embarrassing hundreds of registered voters who didn't go to the polls in 2004.
In its latest edition, Miller-Perry's black-oriented Nashville weekly published the names and addresses of non-voting registered voters living in largely African-American precincts. A local TV station interviewed several people angry about finding their names and addresses on the list, especially since they believed they had valid reasons they missed the 2004 vote.
"The tactic is dirty," one of those persons, Terrence Alexander, told a reporter in a piece that ran on WTVF NewsChannel 5 in Nashville. "I think they should have had the decency to at least call me." SOURCE
Now keep in mind that this is all public information and anyone of us with time and persistence could compile such a list. But should a newspaper be involved in shaming people into voting? Miller-Perry is unapologetic:
Miller-Perry, who did not immediately return a phone message for comment Thursday, told the Nashville station that it "hurts" when registered voters don't actually vote. "We need to live up to the civil rights that have been given to us," she said. This is not the first time the paper has run a list of non-voting people. In a race for U.S. Senate two years ago, the list apparently encouraged registered voters to vote in the election. Miller-Perry said turnout in one district shot up to 65% from 37% in a previous election. "Sometimes when you embarrass people they do the right thing," she said. SOURCEI have mixed feelings about this one and I would like to hear YOUR thoughts.

EDITOR'S NOTE: In some other "news about newspapers." Alaska's largest newspaper backs Barack Obama! What happened to the 99.9 percent approval rating Gov. Palin had up there? Alaska's largest newspaper, The Anchorage Daily News says the Democrat "brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand." More from BET

I would like a candidate to win by a large margin. Then I know a true majority has spoken. A slim half percent win tells me that those that didn't vote could have changed things drastically.

You have the right to vote and also the right NOT to vote. Thats what we shed blood for, the RIGHT to choose. If they want a higher turn out, then mandate a choise for NONE OF THE ABOVE. If that one wins then they all have to go back and try again, and this time with their own money!

In my opinion, our gov't wasn't created to run like it has been. I think if this gov't's founders knew the way the gov't operates today, they would would be very ashamed of what it has become.

It should be mandatory to vote here as it is in Australia. There is a $50 fine for not voting there!
What is the matter with people? If you didn't vote own up to it. I think anyone who doesn't vote should be publiziced and not allowed to comment on politics.

Everyone has a right to vote or not and that is their business. How would you like it if you were required to publish a list of the things that favored McCain/Palin that you wouldn't run because you were for Obama/Biden?
If you are an honest paper then you would report the news facts, and leave you candidate support for the Editorial page. Of course you are not alone. Most of the main stream media does the same. The media has a long way to go after this election to regain their integrity!

I've always treasured my right and privilege to vote, but it's not my place or anyone else's to use it as a weapon. The whole election process this time around and it's attending BS offends me and I'm usually "offended by the offended"! I'm soooooooo tired of the whole mess.

Why does it always has to be a black or white thing.Vote for whats right for hard working American families that are trying to make a dollar stretch. We are all suffering and working our #@#$ off so we can have a good life.Vote for 4 years of peace not Another 4 years of uncertain problems that are still lurking to come.Get up and make your voice count.Vote for better paying jobs cause the cost of living sucks.Vote to have more employee rights so boss's can stop overworking their workers.Vote for more jobs so we have a greater option and can balance home and work at ease.Vote for a man who will hear you, help you, support this country.Vote for someone who will stop spilling blood of our troops on mother earths soil.Vote for the real change and not for a chance.Love us all!!!

I see a whole lot red neck joe six packers is expressing anger that the editor put the names of blacks that did not vote in the 2004 election. I give her kudos since its public knowledge. there is a lot on that list that gripe about the events that shape their lives but too lazy to do anything about it, if it take shame than so be it. Voting is a privilege that we all should take advantage of and thinking that our one single vote won't mean a hell of a think in the scheme of things. That one vote can put what ever candidate we voting for over and to a lot of dumb palin joe six packs not every black vote for a cacdidate because he is black, we like every other citizen vote for best person what ever their colorthat will make the country and our lives better
