Now that America has finally elected a black president there is a movement afoot to take away the significance of this moment. I was riding along the turnpike the other day and I struck up a conversation with a token booth worker, who I've talked with for the last fifteen years driving this route.
"So we have a black president, huh?" I said to him as I handed him my ticket and money.
"Why do people keep saying that?" he said. "His mother is white! So he's not just black."
"Okay. But he's still black," I said.
"So Tiger Woods is black, too, I guess," he said, chuckling.
"Exactly. He sure is."
What's very curious to me is that before November 6, America was very clear about the blackness of Barack Obama. ...
I've watched a whole bunch of people who never identified with the black community (like a couple on-air people at CNN) who are now all of a sudden black. And I'm watching a lot of white people who may not have considered the idea of a black man leading their nation now attempting to deal with it by de-blacking President-elect Obama.
Well, too late. The die has been cast. Barack Obama is black and there's no getting around it. And it's not my issue, it's one this country established long before anyone of us were even a thought.
The notion was that whiteness was pure and any drop of "black" blood would taint its purity, thus the one-drop rule.
This rule was particularly handy during the Jim Crow era when blacks were forced to sit at the back of the bus, drink from "Coloreds Only" fountains, and couldn't eat, sleep, dine or be educated alongside whites. There had to be a definition of "blackness" during those times to know who had to be excluded. There had to be distinct separation of the races.
Several states-Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and Utah-adopted the one-drop statute as law. They even refined the definition of blackness to be either one-sixteenth or one-thirty-second black-meaning if a person had a great-great-great-grandparent who was black, then that person was black.
Think of how ridiculous that is. But that was the law of the land in America and accepted in states where it wasn't a law. It wasn't until 1967 when the Supreme Court banned interracial marriage in Loving vs. Virginia and declared the Racial Integrity Act illegal.
So yes, Barack Obama is black, despite having a white mother, despite having white grandparents, white great-grandparents, etc. He may be a cousin of Dick Cheney's, but he's a black man in America.
And now that he's president I find it funny how many people are trying to claim him. I find it interesting how many times I'm hearing about his white heritage -- as some sort of, "See he's not so bad...his mother is white!"
I'll say it again. Barack Obama is black. Sorry, but you can't have him now that he's president. You can have Clarence Thomas as a consolation prize.
We all have a black president. Accept it. Embrace it.

I think Obama is just human, color is a issue only when you are mean. If people would think before reacting the world would be in a better shape. Look at yourself before you point fingers toward someone else. Some people love their dog more then human so what a world. I pray that everyone get alone and stop the violence. Grow up.

Obama isn't Black. He is white. He was raised 100% by Whites but now that he is president, Blacks want to claim him....It is a little too late.

With All Due Respect May I comment (thank You) President Elect Obama was born through the channel of a caucausian woman for 9.5 months he was pretty much reared by her during his formative years; then he was rearer further by his caucasian GrandParents for the rest of his formative years. He was also reared (Educationally) by Caucausian Schools Hawaii, Harvard etc. So in essence he is not black; because someone wise said "as a man THINKEST in his Heart so is he." So blacks who are enamored with his color get over it and accept the man for who he is and that is a man for Humanity. Thank you for Reading these few words.

I have a dream, that one day all three of my children will one day, grow up in a society where they are not judged by their race, but by their character. Dr. M.L. King.
Apparently we're not there yet, as no one seems to care about the character of B.O.

It funny that this issue never came up with Governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson. Governor Richardson claims to be hispanic although his father is white. Its ok for half white & asian person to claim being asian. Its ok for half white & hispanic person to claim being hispanic. The only bi-racial people in the world are a mixture of black and white. Funny, yet sad. Salma Hayek is always referred to being hispanic, yet her father is lebanese.

When the republicans say that they hate big government it's because they don't want the states to have their decisions contested by the federal government. Whenever Blacks fought for anything it would be from the support of the federal gov't help that they would win because the states were ran by the people doing the dirt so republicans hate "BIG GOVERNMENT" or oversight. When schools were first integrated the Black students had to be protected by federal troops because state cops were in on the BullSht. That is the hate for BIG GOVERNMENT by republicans. When you hear conservatives “BIG SPENDING” democrats o liberals they hate social programs that are paid for by the government (programs for parolees Day care) needed to fix all they done to us. There are a few celebs with these views and yahoo and a site called "The Daily Standard listed them. These are people we support but have views that affect us in a bad way. Here are those celebs being listed because when they have $2300 to donate to republicans to when the White House and push agendas that hurt us it's like we are paying to hurt ourselves when we watch there shows on TV or in the movies and buy their music. I personally won't be doing that for any of them you can choose for yourself.

We are not reading a book where one could judge the book by it's cover! It is strange how Obama separated himself from his Father in his TV story of himself and how he claims he is a Christian. Twenty years with Rev White, his wife who is not white nor is his idea of the rich giving to the poor. His sisters, wife, children and soul are black. He was lucky to have learned so well from whites how to think and talk, but he is far from being all that. When he starts dealing with terrorist, boy is he going to screw this country up more.

Obama doesn't need to be white or black, but he is going to try to undermind this government and most likely cause alot of trouble.

@ Ahmad
If we went by your standard, then any black child adopted by a white couple would be considered white and we ALL know thats not true and problematic at the least.
