Don't get it twisted, America is one of the richest countries on earth. Even as our financial meltdown accelerates, the global markets follow us. Our dollar is getting stronger as the greenback is still popular in a time of global instability. And yet, we as a nation, do not make feeding each and every child who lives here a priority. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA):Children as well as adults experienced instances of very low food security in 323,000 households (0.8 percent of households with children) in 2007, up from 221,000 households (0.6 percent of households with children) in 2006.

Now 323,000 families may not seem like a big number to you, but it does to me. That translates into almost 700,000 kids. I would argue that there is simply no excuse for children going hungry for lack of access to food in this food rich nation. I want our government (yes, I want government involvement here) to make sure food banks have a ready pipeline to food! We can spend $300 billion on Wall Street banks, with virtually no oversight or accountability, but we cannot fund and fill food banks?
Single mothers, blacks, Latinos and poor people are hit the hardest:
The families with the highest rates of food insecurity were headed by single mothers (30.2 percent), black households (22.2 percent), Hispanic households (20.1 percent), and households with incomes below the official poverty line (37.7 percent). It is an outrage. But you CAN help. Please donate, share whatever you can.
States with families reporting the highest prevalence of food insecurity during 2005-2007 were Mississippi (17.4 percent), New Mexico (15 percent), Texas (14.8 percent) and Arkansas (14.4 percent).
The highest growth in food insecurity over the last 9 years came in Alaska and Iowa, both of which saw a 3.7 percent increase in families who struggled to eat adequately or had substantial food disruptions.
Ninety-three percent reported eating less than they felt they should because there was not enough money for food.
Sixty-five percent of respondents reported that they had been hungry but did not eat because they could not afford enough food.
Forty-five percent of respondents reported having lost weight because they did not have enough money for food.
Feeding American - right now Kraft will match your gift. Every dollar donated means 16 bowls of food for children and families.

I am a Social Worker who is empolyed by a City and County Social Service Agency. The United States Government is one of the few nations that provide free food programs such as Food Stamp Aid, Cash Grants, WIC, and other Community Food Programs for the disadvantaged and Senior Citizens. The problem lies in the fact that a large number of Single Mothers and parents are addicted to Crack/Crank, etc. This means that Mom can be receiving over $600.00 a month in Food Stamps, she must complete her Quarterly paperwork on time and attend appointments with their Eligiblity Worker, shop for the food at a grocery store, take the food home and cook it to feed the children. If Mom or Dad are drug addicts, their main concern is obtaining money to purchase their drugs, even if it means selling their Food Stamps, etc. And a drug addicted parent will not wake up at 6:00 a.m. in the morning to prepare breakfast for their child, prepare and pack their lunch for school or have a hot dinner prepared for the children at dinner time. The problem is not that the U.S. does not provide food to feed children and their families, it is the drug epidemic that is affecting the care of children in our County today. Moreover, when you talk to these parents who cannot feed their children, notice how many of them have Cell phones that they purchase and pay their monthly phone bill charges with their children's Cash Aid monies. What's more important? A Cell phone or purchasing food to feed your children.

To the social worker...Wow, $600/mo FS??!! What state do you live in?
Nonetheless, that's such a negative/pessimistic perspective..I'm sure your caseload volume is
horrendous...But I'm certain for every addict you interview, there are 10 people that are not addicts and have legitimate employment, cash flow, & educational concerns; which will ultimately lead to 'hunger'..
Sounds like your job encounters have taken its toll on you and you're sense of compassion/empathy (the very essence of a SW) has significantly diminished..You sound defeated..
You know what they say : If you're not a part of the solution, you must a be a part of the -------- . Might wanna consider a career change..or turn off Russ Limbaugh (he's distorting your view of reality)..
Social ills (institutional racism, hunger, educational & real estate bias..ad nausea..yes, even with a Black Pres. Elect!) are quite real in these yet to be 'United' States ..Sure the U.S. has aid packages in place, as it did back when Roosevelt was Pres...People drank liquor & shot heroin back then, still there were hundreds of thousands starving & in soup lines!! Addiction is a very, very small part of the overall problem..Try not to lose your perspective..We have a lot of work to do...No one can do everything..but if everyone does something, everything will get done..madluv4u..whoever & wherever you are..

I think this whole thing is crazy. I have four children and my wife is a stay at home parent(daycare is to much for us to afford). Anyways we recently tried to get some assistince with food and cash aid and we were turned away because they say that i make to much money. WOW how is that possible. At my current employment im currently makeing $12 a hour. yeah i know i want to better myself but i also have to make a living for my family. anyways back to the point. The social worked said that i make $400 to much to receive ant type of benifits. I wonder if they take in consideration that I have to pay rent, gas, electric, car note, foodand clothing i think the system is rediculous if you ask me. so basically you have to be working at a fast food joint, to get help trying to support a family of six. WOW, yes we need Change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you read this article remember how much the Presidential candidates spent on their elections this year. Think about all the money this country wastes every year on things that do not help anyone but themselves.

To Blog #3 who responded to my Blog about me being a "Incompassionate Social Worker" - Drug addiction is not a very small problem in our Society today, but a very big problem! You would make a perfect DEA Official for the U.S. Government. I suggest you go on line and research your local County or State stats on Child Abuse Cases and how many children enter the foster care system each month because of their parents who are abusing illegal drugs. And yes, their are other parent(s) who are also addicted to drugs such as "Movie Stars" and "Professional Athletes", but their "Social Status" and money exempt them from being reported to the American Child Abuse System, (a perfect example of this would be the Ozzie Osborne Family). And yes I am angry at any parent or parent(s) who spend their money on Cell phones, Video equipment, special Cable Channels, expensive hair dress pieces, designer purses and clothes, false nails, etc., while their children are hungry or their infant is being fed orange cola and water instead of infant formula, not clothed properly to include 2 day old diapers, no electricity or running water in the home. Again, what is more important - Material Things or Food?

THE SYSTEM IS OUT DATED. THE PEOPLE WHO TAX MONEY THAT SUPPORT THIS SYSTEM CAN'T GET HELP WHEN THEY NEED IT. tHE SOCIAL WORKER THAT MADE HER COMMENT IS IN THE WRONG AND NEEDS TO FIND ANOTHER JOB FAST. SOME PEOPLE HAVE CELL PHONES AND NO HOUSE PHONES. SOME SHOP AT THIFT STORES FOR CLOTHING AND GET DONATIONS FROM CHARITIES. DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER.

My mom works in a school cafeteria. When kids come in and don't have money to pay for their breakfast or lunch, her manager makes them give the kids peanut butter on one slice of bread. They don't get breakfast at all if they don't have money. They don't get milk or anything to drink with the peanut butter sandwich. My mom is so pissed. A lot of times, she pays for some of the kids lunches. Of course, in a school cafeteria she doesn't make much, but it breaks her heart to know that school meals are the only meals some of these kids get, and they are only allowed 2 teaspoons of peanut butter and a slice of bread. Then, she says after everyone is served, they throw away enough food to feed 50 people. This is a really small town, so there are not 100s of kids struggling, but even with a few, why is all the food being thrown away? Kids will continue to be hungry is schools don't even care enough to feed them what may weel be their only meal for the day. I have went to our local paper anonomously to report this. They will be doing an investigative report in 2 weeks.
