The tragic and public death of teenager Abraham Biggs brings to light two social phenomena that continue to be poorly understood: the threat of suicide and how to prevent it; as well as the so-called bystander effect, which is exaggerated by the detached nature of communication via the Internet.
Many might see those who talk about killing themselves as just crying wolf, but there is a clear way to differentiate between those who truly intend to follow through from those who haven't reached that breaking point.
Biggs had a plan: a well thought out, calculated strategy carried out in front of a wide online audience. A professional would have known that his suicide letter posted on another site, a Webcam set up and history of depression were clear indications that he meant business.
Unfortunately, the basics of suicide prevention aren't common knowledge to enough members of the public.
Often times we see ourselves as being helpless to influence someone in such dire need of help. However, asking the simple question, "Do you have a plan?" can save someone's life. Anyone planning suicide needs swift and professional help and should be under that kind of care until they can be stabilized....
Morton M. Silverman of The National Suicide Prevention Resource Center, in
Most suicide prevention specialists would want to intervene before suicidal planning emerges or before planning "goes too far."
Of course this does not address the most powerful contributing factor to Biggs' untimely death, which in my opinion is the bystander effect.
The term bystander effect refers to the phenomenon in which the greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in distress; it was a phenomenon made famous by the Kitty Genovese murder.
With so many people watching Briggs online, no one even bothered to alert authorities until 12 hours later, probably assuming that someone else would take action first. Perhaps they felt communicating with Abraham directly online might steer him away from overdose, but again, Biggs needed the help and supervision of professionals.
As discussion of mental illness continues to be a taboo subject within the African-American community, we should not be surprised to see more cases like this in the future. The only way to change this will be by removing the stigma about mental illness, educating the public about recognizing warning signs and realizing that you, as an individual, can save lives.

Life is so very precious, no one should have urged this young man to commit the act of suicide. This particular incident could have been prevented. "First Aid is the temporary and imediate care given to a person who is injured or who suddenly becomes ill". There is policy called the "Duty To Act, which means there is a legal obligation to give aid or perform emergency care" (First Aid For Colleges And University 7th edition pgs.3-5 (1999). It was stated that Biggs was a college student. Most college students are require to take these courses, so someone watching this tragic ordeal, obviously had taken a first aid class. is Someone should have offered him words of comfort. We have some very cruel minded people these days, anything goes for thrills and excitement. Mr. Biggs was only 19, and had just developed half of his brain. It takes fifteen years to develop half of the brain, and another fifteen to develop the other half. So, sometimes real maturity does not begin until the 30's, or early 40's. Iam studying for a Master of Science in Counseling. Blacks do seek mental health, as they should, simply because of the inadquate resources to pay for such services. I plan to open my own clinic, when I graduate. And I will make it my mission to see anyone, who needs counseling services. Someone mentioned that he could have been saved, by someone comforting him and calmly speaking to him in positive affirmations, this is absolutely true. Biggs was seeking peer approval when he committed this act. It is fact that young adolescents seek peer aproval, rather than parents, so his peers helped him to finalize his decision to end his life. Only an immature individual would have cheered him on. Youg adult need to seek advice from their parents and other family members, regardless of the situation, concerning serious situations. "People considering suicide are overwhelmed with hopeless. They feel that things cannot get better and that there is no way out of their difficulties. This is depression in the extreme, and it is not a state of mind that somone can is easily talked out of. But most suicidal people do want help, however much they may despair of obtaining it." (Annotated Instructor's Edition Psychology/ Sixth Edition, pg.553). "Adolescents account for 12% percent of all suicide attempts, and sucide is the leading cause of death among adolescents, after accidents"(Weiner,1992). A life may be saved.
Sending heartfelt condolences to Abraham Biggs's family.
Sincerely,
Charlotte E. Henry

Smiling at you but within I cry, I cry
hurt, feeling anguish, and pain
not always understanding why
laughing, performing in life's game
to ask and need help is considered weak
so in silence i hide my hurt, in silence
i hide my pain.
smiling, but within i cry, i cry
they see it on my face but not once
do they lend a hand no one is asking
why?
i could be in a crowded room but i feel so all alone,
by passers, associates, but no love to call my own
how can one understand what i do not understand myself
tears falling falling living with a heavy heart
trying to be strong , trying to smile, but slowly falling apart
i may be smiling , ive learned the art of "pretend"
i may be smiling but im crying within ....
im crying within .

it's always a loss when you have someone so young who feels so bad they dont want to doe they just want te pain to stop and the feel so helpless, they just really need someone to be there , and help them feel better about themself, many think it's a sign of weakness to cry or be emotional but it's not it takes courage to express yourself,
people should really watch the things they say , you never know what one is going through or what they have been through , i hated to hear about this that someone felt this helpless that they took theor own life...and it was known that he was feeling this way , well he is in Jah's hands now

YOU KILLED HIM. HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE--YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR FAMILY, STRANGERS. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM--ESPECIALLY HOW YOU TALK TO PEOPLE. STOP KILLING PEOPLE WITH YOUR WORDS AND ACTIONS

For someone to contemplate suicide means there is a mental issue somewhere. To take your own life is a crime. It is against the law, it is against nature and it is against THE ALMIGHTY GOD. That young man was crying out for help. He wanted someone to help him, to talk him out of it, If he meant to carry it out he would not of done it in front of the camera's. I think he wanted attention as well and he secretly hoped that some of the people looking on would have called for help to come to his door sooner. I am dealing with a family member that is bipolar also. Walking on eggshells all the time letting them have their way because any little thing will set him off and he starts tearing up stuff. If he is on the phone and someone on the phone make him mad same thing. It is a mood disorder that cannot be controlled. His medicine did not work.He stopped taking it. He has been shifted to family member to family member and now splits his time with me and two other relatives because i said this would be better than the burden being on just one person all the time. The people that egged Mr.Briggs on should be ashamed of themselves. HOW WOULD THEY LIKE IT IF SOMEONE DID THEIR FAMILT MEMBER LIKE THAT. YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SEW. BELIEVE THAT.
