For almost two centuries American Christianity, including BJU in its early stages, was characterized by the segregationist ethos of American culture. Consequently, for far too long, we allowed institutional policies regarding race to be shaped more directly by that ethos than by the principles and precepts of the Scriptures. We conformed to the culture rather than provide a clear Christian counterpoint to it.
In so doing, we failed to accurately represent the Lord and to fulfill the commandment to love others as ourselves. For these failures we are profoundly sorry. Though no known antagonism toward minorities or expressions of racism on a personal level have ever been tolerated on our campus, we allowed institutional policies to remain in place that were racially hurtful. ...
Given that slave owners twisted the gospel of the New Testament to justify slavery, it is heartening and encouraging to see a college that trains future ministers, come out and profess that God's word promotes unity and celebrates diversity:
[The Bible] teaches that God created the human race as one race. History, reality and Scripture affirm that in that act of creation was the potential for great diversity, manifested today by the remarkable racial and cultural diversity of humanity. Scripture also teaches that this beautiful, God-caused and sustained diversity is divinely intended to incline mankind to seek the Lord and depend on Him for salvation from sin (Acts 17:24–28).
The true unity of humanity is found only through faith in Christ alone for salvation from sin-in contrast to the superficial unity found in humanistic philosophies or political points of view. For those made new in Christ, all sinful social, cultural and racial barriers are erased (Colossians 3:11), allowing the beauty of redeemed human unity in diversity to be demonstrated through the Church.
Do you think this statement will have a softening effect on the hearts of bigots who call themselves Christians?

A bigot is a bigot is a bigot to paraphrase Gertrude Stein. A parallel corrolary to this would be: will the passage of gay marriage laws have a softening effect on those who so vehemently oppose gays?
People are entitled to believe what they want. Just as long as they don't think they have the moral imperative, the god-given RIGHT to legislate their intolerance and prejudice into law!
That BJU "came out" of the discrimatation closet to offer an explanation and apolgia for their previous un-affirmative actions, is a beginning though. I applaud it reservedly with regards to its softening impact on Christian bigots! Pope Urban issued a catholic "fatwah" in 1099 to absolve the crusaders from murdering unbelievers in the Name of God! Talk about twisting the bible to achieve an end! Mein gott!

I've seen this segragation a long time ago when I studied the bible. In different books you would see "whites" and in other books you'd see "blacks". Thats not the way GOD made this world. If god wanted us seperated god would have made one planet for Blacks & one planet for whites. He didnt do that so all races have to get along or pay the ultimate price! No one is better than the other. just something to think about!!

Some who are not familiar with the Bible may be interested to know that the Apostle Peter (Jewish born), was resistant to preach to and testify to Gentiles (Non-Jews) about salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ, as found in (Acts Chapters 8 & 9). However, God reeducated Peter that those things which are Unclean, He can make Clean.
You know something, Peter at first got it wrong. He discriminated against Non-Jews. The Lord had to change his heart, and help him to understand that God Himself sent Jesus into this world for ALL men, regardless of whether they were Jewish born or not.
Friends don't forget your history. Yes, misguided men have wrongly discerned the Word of God to seperate and divide men in the past; these same men who have misinterpreted Scripture to enslave their fellow man.
Yet, I wish to remind you that the Abolitionist movement was born-out of Christian's who rightly divined God's word. Who then oppossed the evils of slavery.
But whatever the motivation of Bob Jones descison to reverse their former stand, I shall give them the benifit of the doubt and believe that perhaps God has changed their hearts, just as He changed Peter's heart.
