The story of the brutal murder of Little Rock news anchor Anne Pressly caught my attention right away. I try to ignore crime stories for the most part, but the slaying of this beautiful young reporter resonated perhaps because of my past profession as a network journalist and the fact that she fought her attacker with so much force and resolve. And when police arrested a black male suspect in Pressly's case, I had two immediate thoughts. My first reaction was relief that law enforcement had taken an allegedly depraved individual off the street and hope that Pressly's family and loved ones would find some comfort in having her alleged killer behind bars.
My second reaction was a mixture of anger, sorrow and frustration that a black man may have committed this crime -- and a rape linked to his DNA -- and then that race would be an issue at all.
Here is one of the first comments I read on AOL's coverage of the arrest:
ItsaGirlThing5Cross racial crime is tough terrain in the discussion of race relations in America. The image of "the scary black man" is hyper-propagated on sites like Stormfront and New Nations while white-centric spokesmen like David Duke use exaggerated crime statistics to spread fear of black men and black people in general. In October, NPR's Michel Martin interviewed David Duke on her show "Tell Me More." Duke quoted a statistic, that although later refuted by the U.S. Department of Justice - listen here - is the bedrock of many racist claims about "the nature" of black people and black men in particular. He said:
02:47 PMDec 01 2008
Duh. Why are they bringing race into this? Show me the last time a white man stalked and killed a black woman. It happens, but not nearly as much as this. Why we are surprised a black man did this is what's so amazing. What a bunch of dumb asses.
We have a vast disproportionate crime rate in this country, at 37,460 white women who are raped or sexually assaulted by black males, as according to the United States Justice Department.
Again, these numbers were refuted by the US Department of Justice and you can click on this link and then 'DOJ Responds' to listen to that interview.
Still, it does appear that more white women are assaulted by black men, than black women are assaulted by white men. Most crime victims overall are of the same race as their attackers. And it is an uncomfortable societal imbalance that when white people commit awful crimes against black people or other people of color, the perpetrators are seen as malevolent exceptions whereas when black people commit awful crimes against white people, that is seen, at least in some corners, as a call to action (arms?) of some sort. I don't fully understand it to be honest.
Should race matter when we discuss crime? Why or why not?

I had the pleasure of teaching for five years at Southern University, the nation's largest historically black university. A criminal justice professor there liked to begin his classes by driving his students through North Baton Rouge, which is predominantly black. He wanted to know from his students why all the windows had bars. What did they fear? The answer? "IT AIN'T THE KKK!!!" Most crime against blacks is committed by blacks, and the sooner black leaders have the guts to address that problem the sooner it will be solved.

No matter that he is black...,he killed the woman and he should be punished for it. I believe in the death penalty. We know that we live in a racists society but right is right. Think...if that was your sister, niece granddaughter and a white or black man did that to her, how would you feel? But also remember how the group of white (men and women) held that black girl against her will making her have oral sex with the mother and the males, eat dog poop, drink out of the toilet, stabbed her in the legs, beat her, threatened to kill her, and probably would have except a policeman heard her crying out to him and saved her. Where was the outrage outside the black community? (although I did hear a few whites say that's a shame)

Its simple. White women are protrayed as more valuable than black women, asian, etc. Always has been like that however things are changing.

See this is the kind of @#$% that makes me angry! It is not a common thing a black man raping and killing a white woman! It's not common black people committing crimes against whites for the simple reason that it brings to much heat! Just look how quickly they found this guy! When somebody white gets killed and they 'suspect' somebody black, it becomes a CAUSE for law enforcement to find the n*&&^%! What is more common is that white men rape and kill black women and GET AWAY WITH IT! This young lady here in Memphis who's body was found in a field they haven't made no headway in her case yet but it's widely suspected that a white man did it! Same thing for a young lady in Little Rock (where Anne Pressly was killed) back in 2006 she walked home one night and never made it. Her body was found later that week and no suspect has been brought in yet! And a white man was suspected in THAT murder too! Yet Anne Pressly's case is being trumpeted all over tv EVERYDAY! It was tragic what happened to her and I hope they got the right person (DNA evidence can be faked too) cause the police have a history of grabbing black people for crimes like this and we find out twenty or so years later after they've spent many years in jail, they were innoccent all along! It's tragic what happened but I want equal justice for these two young black women who were assaulted and murdered as well as for Anne Pressly. They left behind children who no longer have their mothers' while Anne Pressly left behind only her parents who are getting along quite well!

Wow, you certainly proved your ignorance amd hatred in that post. So a human life is more valuable if you have children? I hope you realize that is exactly what you insenuated in your post and I pray that Anne Pressly's parents never come across your words because I can only imagine how devastating it would be for them to read something like that.

PEOPLE ARE SO IGNORANT, THE FACT THAT A LIFE WAS TAKEN IS THE ISSUE HERE AND IT'S A SHAME, RATHER HE WAS BLACK, WHITE, PURPLE OR GREEN HE IS RIGHT WHERE HE BELONGS. WHO CARES THAT HE IS A BLACK MAN? THE FACT STILL REMAINS THAT A BEAUTIFUL INNOCENT LIFE WAS TAKEN. WOULD YOU THINK IT WAS OK IF IT WAS A WHITE MAN? ABSOLUTELY NOT. SO SHOULD ALL BLACK MEN IN THIS AREA OR A ROUND THE WORLD BE TREATED DIFFERENTLY FOR ANOTHER BLACK MAN'S ACTIONS? ABSOLUTELY NOT! SO GET OVER IT, MOVE ON... AND BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR ANY AND ALL RACES WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR SAFETY AND SAY SOME PRAYERS FOR THIS YOUNG LADY'S FAMILY WHILE I'M SURE THEY ARE STILL IN MOURNING! END OF STORY.

No. Race should not matter. The only thing that matters is that a woman was raped and murdered. If they have the right man, I pray that he is punished severely. We as black people have to stop being embarassed when a black person commits a crime. We should just be happy when they are taken off the streets and try to do our part to help prevent more people from going down that same path. Unless you are a relative or close friend of the criminal, it really shouldn't reflect on you.

MY HEART GOES OUT TO ANNE PRESSLY'S FAMILY AND I HATE
THIS HAPPENED TO HER.MORE SELF ESTEEM PROGRAMS ARE IN PLACE AT THIS
TIME TO HELP THOSE BLACK BOYS THAT HAVE FALLEN THROUGH THE CRACKS AND BEEN FAILED BY SOCIETY. WITH MORE INTERVENTION AND HELP, THOSE THAT CAN'T CONTROL THEIR
ANGER AND OTHER THINGS THAT CAUSE THEM TO COMMIT CRIMES OF RETALIATION. MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN JUST
FINISHED A SPEAKING TOUR AND POINTED OUT WE NEED TO BE
CONCERNED ABOUT THE "CRADLE TO PRISON PIPELINE". THE
LITTLE ROCK MLK,JR. COMMISSION HAS INITIATED L.E.A.D.
(LEADERSHIP,EDUCATION&ACCEPTANCE OF DIVERSITY). THIS PROGRAM IS TO HELP TEACH YOUNG ARKANSANS OF ALL RACES THE PRINCIPLES OF RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS HARMONY AS WELL AS LEADERSHIP SKILLS. THE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS
ACROSS ARKANSAS ARE ALSO HELPING THOSE THAT CAN'T MAKE IT IN TRADITIONAL SCHOOL SETTINGS. THESE SCHOOLS HELP KEEP STUDENTS OFF THE STREETS. ALL OF
THESE INITIATIVES ALONG WITH THE WONDERFUL, POSITIVE,
IMAGE THE NEW PRESIDENT OF COLOR OFFERS, WILL BRING
ABOUT THE CHANGE NEEDED TO HELP OUR YOUTH ACHIEVE AND
INHERIT A FUTURE THEY DESERVE. A CONCERTED EFFORT
ACROSS THIS NATION TO HELP OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN
YOUTH IS NEEDED TO ASSIST IN THIS CHANGE. IF THAT IS
DONE, THE STATISTICS ESPECIALLY ABOUT BLACK BOYS
AND MEN BEING THE MOST ENDANGERED SPECIES WILL END.

First let me be the first to say that any crime committed by anyone should not go unpunished. The race of the victim and the race of the accused should not matter, but sadly it does.
We live in a country that was founded by slave owners and said slave owners had set the ideals that our nation thrive upon. One of those ideals is that white life is worth more than that of any other race's life.
You can see shades of Emitt Till in the first O.J. case. Most of the fanfare was not the death of a woman and her friend or even the fact that she was a former/current drug addict... it was the race issue. In North Carolina a popular female student named Carson was murdered and the men convicted were black. Evidence in the woman's death point to the fact that these men were hardened criminals but it took the death of a 'pretty' young blonde to get these men off the streets.
The case of the Central Park Jogger was mentioned and it was one that had the whole city sympathizing with the victim and made 'wilding' a new verb. The young men in this case were prosecuted and jailed for over fifteen years before it was proved that they were innocent. Unlike the Duke Lacrosse case none of the prosecutors were harrassed into leaving their jobs/dissbarred or to my knowledge sued by the young men.
Jeffry Dhama made it a habit of picking up young black, Latino and other men of color and it was because of this and the (Gay asspect) that he eluded law enforcement for so long. In fact one of the victims (a non-English speaking Asian man) was brought back to his house and left there by the police.
We are in a nation that holds dearly onto the ugly legacy of the three fifths laws and the theme from G.W. Griffth's 'Birth Of A Nation'.
Until we learn to appreciate life no matter what color skin it is wrapped in we as a nation are doomed.
