In the weeks following Barack Obama's election, hateful racial incidents have surged. Some are more ominous than others, some with more impact, some just kinda stupid and annoying. Some examples: Idaho school kids chant "Assassinate Obama" on a school bus and school officials are slow to (barely) react. "They just hadn't heard anything like this before," said Whoolery. "They were chanting on the bus, 'Assassinate Obama. Assassinate Obama.' Then adding in a name sometimes of a classmate on the bus, 'Assassinate Obama and Kate.'" The Whoolery's explained to their kids what assassinate means then contacted the school about what was happening. Source "I think the thing that struck us was just like, 'Where did they get the word and why would they put that word and that person together?'" said Whoolery.Young white people (mostly young men) on Facebook post racial slurs and even assassination threats against President-elect Obama, and the young man of color who exposes them is threatened with account suspension. An excerpt from a soldier in uniform:
Taylor West wrote at 1:51am What do we do!?! The antichrist is in Office now!!! KILL OBAMA!!! I didnt get to vote out here, but I hate that Obama won. I dont want some dude with the name Hussein, as my president. He dont even stand up for the national anthem. I swear on everything hes a terrorists. Source: Honky Talk blog
And according to the Associated Press:
Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.Howard Witt, of the Chicago Tribune, reports that Klan membership is up, and the Southern Poverty Law Center is alarmed while the FBI and Secret Service are investigating:
At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins." Source
"We've seen everything from cross burnings on lawns of interracial couples to effigies of Obama hanging from nooses to unpleasant exchanges in schoolyards," said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Ala. "I think we're in a worrying situation right now, a perfect storm of conditions coming together that could easily favor the continued growth of these groups."It's that last graph above that caught my attention. It's good to know that the FBI and Secret Service are investigating any conspiracies or coordinated activity against our President-elect. I for one completely believe that Barack Obama will serve out the full term(s) of his presidency in good health. I am not worried and have pretty much read about these incidents with some head shaking and eye rolling in response. None of it surprises me.
The FBI is investigating the recent Klan-related incidents to determine the extent of any possible conspiracies. And the Secret Service is monitoring the apparent sudden surge in hate incidents "to try to stay ahead of any emerging threats," according to spokesman Darrin Blackford in Washington. Source
But it occurred to me that ignoring these incidents won't make them go away. What will make them "go away" to some extent is for each of us committed to anti-racism to make it very clear to those around us that racist talk or actions will not be tolerated. Don't stand for it. And if you hear something threatening, call law enforcement and report it.
Obama campaigned on "Yes we can." We proved we could. Don't let it slip now. Stand up and speak out.

#11 you make my point exactely!!! There are inner city kids and poor kids all over the country (my son was one of them) who need help. Let their efforts and GRADES get them the loans and grants needed, NOT THEIR COLOR OR LACK THEREOF! African Americans are not the only ones who need help. Why should they get into higher education with LOWER gpa's and lower m-cat's than anyone else?? You want equality, EARN IT.

Oh settle down #8. The point 5 and 7 are making is that there were and are many, many racially motivated things going on provoked by black Obama supporters as well. Why are those issues not being discussed in this artical because they too play a part? And you're entirely and fundamentally wrong to think that BV is not part of the racial divide that still exists in the U.S. The same thing applies to any and all other organizations, groups, party's, etc. that cater to any one specific group or people...on any level. So when you and others decide to shut these sites and organizations down, then the wheels of change may start to occur in regular frequency.
Also, just as many people who wouldn't and didn't support president Bush, there will be those who feel the same towards Obama. Some may have racial issues, some may just have general disagreements with his political agendas, but just becuause one doesn't care for the guy, does not automatically make them a rascist, contrary to what the majority of his supporters say. I personally don't judge people by their skin color, sexual orientation, etc. but I do judge them by their sensibilities and make no bones about it. If you voted on Nov.4th based on emotion rather than for love of your country, then you're a simpleton in my eyes. If you voted for a person because their skin color matche's yours, your a simpleton in my eyes. If you voted against a person just because you hated the last guy in office but that person was ready to step in without a seconds notice, although it meant placing a candidate in office who had no skill or credentials to be qualfied for the job, then your a simpleton in my eye's. If you voted for a candidate because you knew everything there was to know about that person, and felt whole-heartedly that it was the right decsion for the country, then I commend you, unlike the 12 voters that were interviewed on "HOWOBAMAGOTELECTED.com who obviously voted without having any knowledge or history on their candidate of choice. It's a reckless and dangerous mindset that makes decisions on an emotional level, and that's exactly what these dolts did.
That's it.

Why don't the FBI capture those american terrorist and institutionalize them? They are no different than those that our soldiers are fighting in iraq. They want to kill and destroy Americans. Teaching childrens to hate is the equivalence of teaching them to become suicidal bombers.

And 17, if Hannity and Limbaugh are spreading racial hatred around the U.S., then what, in your opinion, is Al Sharpton, Jerimiah Wright, Michael Phflager, Chris Mathews, Keith Oberman, Campbell Brown, Rachel Maddow and Louis Farrakhan doing.....spreading the love? Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "The Liberal Mind: The Pshycological Causes of Political Madness" and save yourself from the curse you've been placed under?

I WAS JUST CURIOUS AND CLICKED ON YOUR SITE AND READ THE WHOLE CONTENT WITH COMMENTS. I AM WHITE AND 41 AND GREW UP IN EAST BOSTON IN THE 60'S - 80'S IN WHICH WAS PREDOMINENTLY ITALIAN DECENT AMERICANS. BOSTON ITSELF WAS NOTORIOUSLY SEGREGATED, BUT AS FOR PREDJUDICE IN MY HEART FOR OBAMA BECOMING OUR PRESIDENT I AM NOT. I AM PREDJUDICED AGAINST BUSH AND THE REST OF HIS REPUBLICAN CRONIES AGAINST US MIDDLE CLASSED AMERICANS TRYING KEEP OUR LIVING STANDARDS IN TACT. I AM SO GLAD OBAMA WON. SOME BLACKS MAY VOTE FOR HIM ONLY BECAUSE HE IS BLACK, BUT I BELIEVE AND SEE BEYOND HIS COLOR THAT HE IS THE MAN FOR OUR COUNTRY NOT FOR SOME FOREIGN COUNTRY OR THE OIL SCAMS IN THE MID EAST. I HAVE A LOT OF CONFIDENCE IN HIM AND HOPE HE ASKS GOD TO GUIDE HIM. HE SEEMS VERY PROMISING AND I AM PLEASED WITH HIS PICKS OF STAFF SO FAR. HE SEEMS TO BE A PRESIDENT FOR ALL OF US, NOT JUST FOR BLACKS. OUR TROOPS DON'T BELONG IN IRAQ WASTING OUR YOUNG LIVES, OUR $10 BIL A MONTH WHICH SHOULD GO TO OUR COUNTRY BECAUSE IT IS OUR TAX MONEY AND OBAMA ALREADY HAS PLANS TO WITHDAW THEM IN 16 MONTHS. KEEP ON GOING OBAMA WITH MORE GOOD
PLANS

God Bless all people! there are some good people out there in all shades & colors; unfortunately there are some evil folks with control issues that can't stand to see people progress without them and pitifully will hold a grudge for years! Just evil for no reason!reverse that hateful energy and put it into your own life; stop showing your true colors or lack of!

I am an black American. Yet I know by far that it was not just the black vote that got Obama the win. I agree give the brotha a chance will ya? Aint nothin wrong with him than if he were an eligable whit candidate. The man has a history of fundraising projects and fixing bad situations. This is just another one of his projects. I pray for his success. All that voting for Obama because he's black is malarky. I beleive he won primarily because his competion was weak!! If you're a patriot you voted Obama.

In the 60's, the United States government spent a lot of time, money, and man-power infiltrating and busting up The Black Panther Party. Why, I ask, hasn't the same effort been brought forth against the supremist groups, when those groups existed before, during, AND after the Panthers? (Actually, it's a hypothetical question, since I believe that i know the answer). A HATE-GROUP, or organization, is just about that....HATE! NONE should be allowed, if we all are to move on.

President-Elect Obama won and Mccain lost let just leave it at that .If Mccain won do you think African
Amercans would be protesting and threatening to kill him.We haven't for the last 43 presidents elected. The
picture speaks for itself .For those who feel discriminated by African Americans I am sorry but you have to try to understand negative behavior from those
white who do hate and it can be difficult to discern the haters from the hate nots.Unfortunately we have been plague by white racism for 200 years that can make a people really angry. For the whites who are enlighten and truly know it is the character of the individual and not the color thank you for being you.
