In the weeks following Barack Obama's election, hateful racial incidents have surged. Some are more ominous than others, some with more impact, some just kinda stupid and annoying. Some examples: Idaho school kids chant "Assassinate Obama" on a school bus and school officials are slow to (barely) react. "They just hadn't heard anything like this before," said Whoolery. "They were chanting on the bus, 'Assassinate Obama. Assassinate Obama.' Then adding in a name sometimes of a classmate on the bus, 'Assassinate Obama and Kate.'" The Whoolery's explained to their kids what assassinate means then contacted the school about what was happening. Source "I think the thing that struck us was just like, 'Where did they get the word and why would they put that word and that person together?'" said Whoolery.Young white people (mostly young men) on Facebook post racial slurs and even assassination threats against President-elect Obama, and the young man of color who exposes them is threatened with account suspension. An excerpt from a soldier in uniform:
Taylor West wrote at 1:51am What do we do!?! The antichrist is in Office now!!! KILL OBAMA!!! I didnt get to vote out here, but I hate that Obama won. I dont want some dude with the name Hussein, as my president. He dont even stand up for the national anthem. I swear on everything hes a terrorists. Source: Honky Talk blog
And according to the Associated Press:
Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.Howard Witt, of the Chicago Tribune, reports that Klan membership is up, and the Southern Poverty Law Center is alarmed while the FBI and Secret Service are investigating:
At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins." Source
"We've seen everything from cross burnings on lawns of interracial couples to effigies of Obama hanging from nooses to unpleasant exchanges in schoolyards," said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Ala. "I think we're in a worrying situation right now, a perfect storm of conditions coming together that could easily favor the continued growth of these groups."It's that last graph above that caught my attention. It's good to know that the FBI and Secret Service are investigating any conspiracies or coordinated activity against our President-elect. I for one completely believe that Barack Obama will serve out the full term(s) of his presidency in good health. I am not worried and have pretty much read about these incidents with some head shaking and eye rolling in response. None of it surprises me.
The FBI is investigating the recent Klan-related incidents to determine the extent of any possible conspiracies. And the Secret Service is monitoring the apparent sudden surge in hate incidents "to try to stay ahead of any emerging threats," according to spokesman Darrin Blackford in Washington. Source
But it occurred to me that ignoring these incidents won't make them go away. What will make them "go away" to some extent is for each of us committed to anti-racism to make it very clear to those around us that racist talk or actions will not be tolerated. Don't stand for it. And if you hear something threatening, call law enforcement and report it.
Obama campaigned on "Yes we can." We proved we could. Don't let it slip now. Stand up and speak out.

Trust me when I say this. Those fools really do not want to do anything so stupid. We do not live in the same America their grand parents grew up in. My concern is one of these under educate White Power idiots will do something stupid, and the result will be that the Civil War will become the second worst conflict in American History. Believe me, they don't want to do anything racially stupid.

AOL may be a little divisive at times, but I personally think this article is only shining the light on what's really going on. White folks (some) are running scared. And what do scared dogs do when they feel threatened? They growl, bark, scratch and occassionally bite. Undoubtedly, all the "closet racist" will start to reveal themselves and those who have always lived in ignorance will began spreading their hate and intolerance ttriplefold. Black people are not surprised by this (or atleast we shouldn't be). White America and the media seems to be a little taken aback. They assumed that after the Civil Rights Movement everything was "fixed". Sorry that the election of Pres. Obama burst everyone's bubble.
I think we will see, most attempts on the new president's life (we all know there will be at least one) will prove to be nothing more than a backwoods plot conjured up by some good 'ole boys with more time on their hands then they have teeth in their mouth. (Maybe we'll recognize some commentators from this blog!)
And I'm so very sick and tired of you people pondering the question of why Black Voices is even in existence. There's a Black Voices for the same reason there's an option to set your language setting to Spanish (or every other language for that matter). Truth is, we are not all "one race". To say that, takes away from the individuality and beauty of each culture that makes up this country. People need to stop chanting the "we are 1" fantasy and realize and acknowledge that people are in fact different. But to accept, respect, and appreciate that difference. Learn about your neighbors culture or country of origin. Ask them about their religious/spiritual beliefs. The sooner this country starts having an open dialogue about race and stop trying to lump everyone into a "melting pot", the sooner we can move forward.

I don't know why folks are shocked at what is happening. Although the MAJORITY of Americans elected a man for president..there are still those who would like to have seen an incompetent man and unknown female in the white house...because no matter how unqualified they are...mcCain and palin are still white. In this country..and I have witnessed it personally...no matter HOW intelligent, well spoken, etc you are...if your skin is NOT white...it does not count. This country STILL has a LONG way to go. I pray for Obama and his family constantly, because they have their work cut out for them. Although they have both graduated from the TOP colleges, have had prominent occupations, have a solid family, two beautiful daughters...THAT STILL IS NOT ENOUGH FOR THOSE RACIST HATEMONGERS WHO CALL THEMSELVES 'AMERICANS'..it truly makes me sick and ashamed of this country. The rest of the world looks at us in shame. If you ever travel to Europe, or outside of the US of A..the color of your skin is not an issue....thanks for reading

WOW!! After reading all the comments, it makes me wonder how many hateful people there are out there. How can anyone believe that assassination can solve the issue of the presidency? This is really scary and I hope and pray to GOD above that the Secret Service, FBI, and all the other authoritative people are REALLY looking into this and by all means: TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!! There are some sick and twisted people out there who won't mind implementing this if they were allowed an opportunity. TAKE THIS THING SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE!!! Speaking as a black man, I want Obama to succeed. If a white man would have won, I would want the same thing. I am just tired of the same ole, same ole...elect change, and you just might get it!!

To the ignorant posters of number 5 and 7. First of all black voices does not mean for "blacks only" as you can see all races and ethnic groups are free to voice their opinion here, as your ignorant posts were added. It simply means the topics are based on what is going on in the African American communities. To say that this is racist shows that you are true racists. Otherwise you would deal with it and move on. Yet you felt compelled by some force inside of you to take a stance on such ignorance. I pray for you my friends. I pray that your ignorance and hatred does not spread on to those that you do love if any. I pray that you begin to love yourself enough to start to love those that are different from you. This kind of hatred has to stop in our country. This is a time where we shoudl all unite and not divide because we have a president that is outside of the normality. If we don't come together to break this cycle now it will continue forever. To the woman who feels like she has been a victim of reverse discrimination I empathize with you and also pray for you. I pray that you see what blacks have endured for years and understand why some laws were put in place to even out the playing field. No it is not fair but imagine this, multiply what you have went through by about 17 million people and that is what blacks go throughout our entire life. So, im sorry that you have went through reverse discrimination and i'm not condoning it or justifying it at all becuase it is wrong. You have to understand that when you are dealing with people who were suppressed for so long their is going to be negative feelings. So I pray for the success of your child in college and the health of you and your family and ask that you seek understanding.

Hello America, Obama is our new elected president. For get about whether you wanted him to win or not. Enough people of all color voted for him;so support him and get on with your life.
Are you afraid that he will do a great job? I am sure he will do a great job.
You really do not want to be racist;you are just scared of what this beautiful, young, black man can do.
Obama is president for all American.
How could you hate something that God loves?
If you are doing the things in life that you are put on earth to do;you would stop all this ugliness because "A change has Come". You cannot change the fact that "America voted for Barack Obama"

You know it's sad but reality I understand the issue about Black Voices but there is also a AOL Latino site too. AOL once had mostly mainstream which is White interests and it's trying to appeal to all their consumers. Have you seen some of the Blogs on the regular AOL? It made me cry to read some of the hateful things that's been said. I pray for peace and understanding for all of each other...

Poster #37. I too frequently have to remind/convince myself that there are a good number of enlightened people out there of all races who are ushering in a new generation of enlightened children God Bless you.
JESSIE is part of a loud tragic minority who blames anyone not "like him" for the problems of the world. Hate and bigotry are symptoms of being emotionally disturbed. What is more disturbed than reapeatedly reading, posting and re-posting on a site that you think should be abolished? One has to wonder if Jessie's as diligent with the countless sites dedicated to hatred and white supremecy, or if it'st just black folks he targets? Hmmm.

Why Hasn't Anyone Commented On How Treasonous And Anti-American It Is To Make Threats Against A President Or The President Elect? I Hope These Individuals Have Been Arrested Or At The Least Detained And Informed That If Anything Were To Happen To The President Elect, They'd Be At The Top Of The List As Suspects To A Conspiracy.
And To Posters #5, 7 & 10... There Are Sections For "White Voices" They're Just Listed Under Other Names; Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, CNN, Fox News, Etc... The World Caters To Europeans & European Americans - So Why Does It Offend You When People Of Colour Have The Opportunity to Vent In A Section Specifically Set Up For Them? Futhermore, People Of Colour Have Had To Perform Twice As Hard And Endure Racism And Prejudice Sentiment From Med-School Professors, Colleagues And The General Public - Constantly Questioning Their Capacity To Do What They've Chosen To Do As Their Profession. Racism And Prejudice You Or Your Son Will Never Experience Or Understand.
Stop The Stupidity And Ignorance And Walk In The Next Man's Shoes For A Day - And Realize Why The World Is The Way It Is And Why We're Still Dealing With Issues Of Race Today. A Whole Race Of People Were Enslaved By Another That Thought They Were Superior - And They Were Used And Abused For Hundreds Of Years. And Your Most Pressing Question On A Blog Venting Against Threats of Violence Directed Towards The President Elect Is... "Why Is There A Sections Called Black Voices"? The Answer Is In Your Question - Because Of People Like You!

The worms are coming out of the woodwork. The stench of rottenness is filling the air. Hipocracy will eventually bear its ugly face no matter how sophistcated it is veiled, simply because truth cannot be buried. This condition of resentment has been building in greater momentum since Obama announced his interest in running for the Presidency.
Talk Show Right Wing Extremists, have been fueling the flames of resntment in ways that the Black majority is very much aware of in terms of being spit upon and told that it wasn't spit but must have been a drizzle of rain. We are aware of the presence of the snake more so than the perpetrator that spews the venomous poison of hate and open resentment. When the ratteler strikes he turns away and slithers out of sight. That is his nature. (to put it mildy) He has been biting for more than two years. We are the ones that will eventually suffer the greatest when a reaction to the snake bites will be called reverse racism. There is still no let-up. Many of the bloggers remarks are spewing quotes heard over and over on A. M. raido shows.
to respond to propaganda of negativity.
