Obama YouTube Address - The White House Science & Tech Nerds

I like most Americans wouldn't know the key members of President-elect Obama's science and technology team if I tripped over them in an empty bar.

And that's too bad because while these members of Obama's core advisers lack the sexy sizzle of top diplomats, war strategists or economists, none will be as important in drawing the blueprint for our nation's scientific and technological achievement. ...

Therefore the actual resumes of Dr. John Holdren as Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Dr. Jane Lubchenco as nominee for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Dr. Eric Lander, as co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) interest me far less than the direction Obama said he will travel when it comes to science.

And so far his direction is a good one.

The debate over stem cell research was the most visible science-related topic to cross the public's view and President Bush flubbed it by allowing religious concerns to trump scientific advancement by restricting embryonic stem cell research.

How can expect the best and brightest minds in science to want to work for the government when shackled by Bush's cave-in to the anti-abortion lobby?

Obama has stated he supports the creation of new stem cells from embryos created for in vitro fertilization treatments that would otherwise be discarded.

That is good. Now government scientists will be free to deliver on the promise of treatments for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, strokes, burns and more that were doomed by Bush's science blindspot.
