Young black men are being shot and killed at a rate 40 percent higher than in 2000, according to a new study, and something has to be done about it.In 2007, 426 black males between the ages of 14 and 17 were killed in gun crimes in the U.S., the study shows.
This comes even though the overall rate of homicide in the United States remains relatively low.
According to the AP, the study by criminologists at Northeastern University in Boston partly blamed Bush administration's cuts to local police and juvenile crime prevention programs, like D.A.R.E., for the surge. And guns were the most common weapon.
Let's start the discussion, what do you think we need to do about this and what can our next president do?

1st: What's missing here is the DRUG FACTOR. There is nothing said in this report about what role drugs and gangs have had in the involvement of homicides of young AFM males.
2nd: It's not in the President's job description to be Super Cop. Rather, its well within the power of Congress to adequately distribute funding to local and state municiplaities.
3rd: The judicial system has been a complete failure. How often, when police do their job, that judges recycle these criminals right back out onto the street.
4th: It's the Culture of Violence--Most of these young men are immersed in it from early on. From the music that glorifies death and so on.
Our church in Detroit, where I live, has had an outreach for young people for sometime. We've had a lot of success in rescuing many young people from being trapped into that way of life. But from my perspective I don't see any easy answers to this problem or a quick cure. I'm certainly not looking to the Federal government to solve our problems; most of those in DC are barely able to manage thier own lives let alone this country.
Anyhow, that's all ):

I think that it's a combination of things as to why our young brothers are killing each other. Mainly, though, I believe that a lack of a direct male role model in the home is the primary reason why these young brothers turn to the streets. If more of these young brothers had a strong male figure that will provide guidance, discipline, and a no non-sense way of raising their sons, then you'd see less young black males killing each other. These young brother have to realize that their own life is valuable, and if they believe and understand that, then they will less likely take someone else's life.

I don't understand this. How can this possibly still be happening. Growing up I remember black men killing other black men as if they were attempting to cause genocide. I'm talking at least 20 years ago. Is this problem ever going to go away or will we still be looking at another 20 years of male genocide.
I don't have an answer, but the only thing I know is if this keeps happening there will be no black men left.

There is no need for the "white" man to do anything but sit back and watch the self destruction. If the bullet doesn't get them, AIDS will.

We as a people are enabling bad behavior in every facet of our social life style. Home is where character begins, churchs, and schools are essentials in life, therefore the parents, preachers, and teachers must retool coordinate on our precious comodities. Our youth nationwide have been exposed to a sublimal group of conspirators in our federal, state, and local governments this institutionalized methodology used by our government to bring drugs, guns, and dumb down our citizens lays at every "administration" in my opinion. Our schools became prime targets justifying mind controlled drugs on ADD students that have been left un challenged by concerned parents. Ritalin, etc.,and effects have destroyed our inner cities where child abuse are administered by unskilled minded personnel K-9, where most troubling drop outs begins. Those students hit the street without any sense of responsibility, they fall victims to the street underground criminals who then become their illegal business associates. Our schools have ignored or could care less of their plights. Our street corners become their career immolations. America, wake up our elected officials. They are not serving us, the are busy bailing out corporations, banks and funding a God forsaken war. Our financial drain definitely taken the toll on poor whites, and African Americans economy. We must unite our change must come from exceptionaly great leadership whom will reset out out of control behavior.

Continued incarceration is not the answer! What is needed are programs put in place inside the jails and prisons and made available when they are released. Also, some of those AFMs are sent to jail and prison on medicore charges: given 5-25 years just for possession while the "big fish" gets no time at all ( tru-tv report). They need to make the sentencing fit the crime and make the "big-fish" pay a big price for smuggling the drugs into this country and getting into the hands of the "little-fish" whose doing all the time.
Finally, women are spitting out these children and not taking care of them. Using the school system as "baby-sitters" and when the teacher tries to correct the discipline problems the mom is the first one at the school raising he!!

I went to school with a girl who had her first baby at 12 years old. By the time she was 20 she had 5 boys-not one of them has ever had a job other than that of a drug seller.

What can you expect when babies are having babies. Young and old black males are not taking the reponsbilty to take care of the babies they sire. Black males are the highest in spreading STD. And many black churchs only preach about damnation, salvation and tithing.
I don't think that the election of a black president will have much effect on inspiring many young blacks. Faith in God, better parenting and education will be the three key elements for the black youth. But I also must add that Black African Americans must stop the drugs from being sold in their neighborhoods. And there must be more efforts to get the suppliers, than the sellers.
