MLK Memorial Raises More Than $100M

More than 100 million dollars in donations have been raised for the construction of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial to be built in Washington, DC. Although construction has not begun, a ceremonial groundbreaking actually took place in 2006.

The total cost of the memorial is estimated to reach $120 million so there is still some financial ground to cover before the foundation can be laid.

The site for Dr. King's memorial sits on the banks of the Potomac river between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials.

The approved site creates a visual "line of leadership" from the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, to the Jefferson Memorial. Source
