Paris,Texas, may soon join Bensonhurst, Howard Beach and Jena on the list of communities that are less than cool for black folks.
The U.S. Justice Department held a meeting with local civil rights groups Thursday in the community located 100 miles north of Dallas to quell rising racial tensions since the death of a local man named Brandon McClelland.
This young man's death has called back memories of hate crimes just like the infamous 1998 lynching of James Byrd Jr., in Jasper, Texas.
Others, including law enforcement, say the case is more complicated, and race was not a factor in his dragging death, characterizing the killing as a broken friendship gone horribly wrong. ...
In September, motorists found McClelland's body on a two-lane county road. According to news reports McClelland was walking in front of the pickup driven by Charles Ryan Crostley, 27, and a friend. Both were later arrested for allegedly running McClelland down and then dragged him 40 feet along the road until his mutilated body popped out from beneath the vehicle. It's a sad case.
Hundreds of protesters assembled at the Lamar County Courthouse, just around the corner from the 20-foot Confederate monument dedicated to "Our Heroes."
Some have called it a hate crime just like the infamous 1998 lynching of James Byrd Jr., in Jasper, Texas, 250 miles south of Paris. Others say it was a broken friendship gone horribly wrong and race was not a factor.
The Paris, Texas, situation comes amid reports of an increase in racist activity since the election of President Barack Obama. A Staten Island man, Brian Carranza, 21, admitted attacking three innocent black teens in a racism-fueled Election Day rampage.
Carranza faces 10 years in prison and is free on $200,000 bail, pending his April sentencing.
This month's Justice Department meetings are not the first time a harsh racial light has shined on Paris, Texas.
Two years ago, the Paris school district was investigated over allegations of retaliatory behavior and disparities in discipline against African American students, particularly against those whose parents lodged complaints with the Paris school district.
The matter gained national attention after 14-year-old freshman Shaquanda Cotton was convicted of "assault on a public servant" and sentenced to serve up to seven years at Texas Youth Commission prison.
At a Justice Department meeting earlier this month, community leaders discussed cases involving harsher sentencing for African Americans in the local judicial system, harsher disciplining of African American students by the school district, and inadequate investigations and retaliatory behavior by law enforcement concerning crimes against African Americans.
Two days after the meeting, a disabled African American Paris resident had racial slurs and death threats written on the outside of his apartment. Paris police say the matter is currently under investigation.

I am from Texas and live in Georgia. No matter what you say Charlott, we have to many racist people getting away with murder. Something need to be done sooner then later. Your daughter didn't deserve to be hit by anyone, no matter who did it. But those racist {animals} killed a man and that is a big difference.

By the way Charlott, being white with a mixed family doesn't make you think as a black person would. It doesn't matter where you live, racists comes in all shades, and something MUST be done to stop it. Period!

BettyeJ.. You say that Charlott doesn't think as a black person? So again, you are seperating us from the rest of the world yet asking the white people not to do the same thing? I have lived in Paris all of my life, and I love it here. I've never been descriminated against just because I'm black (that I know of), and I could care less if I was. My aunt does not hire white people to work at her salon. Is that racist? It would be if she were white and refused to hire us. My point is, I have hung around with the wrong crowd before and of course got thrown into the mix of all the bad things that came along with them. I knew Brandon, Ryan, and Shannon and it was horrible what happened to Brandon and even more shocking that Ryan and Shannon were the ones who did it. BUT, they didn't kill Brandon because he was black! They are druggies and thugs! They did what they did because they were mad, and I hope they get the most severe sentence possible. Just for the record, they didn't hang with each other just because they were white or black either - Ryan is not even white, but you won't read that in the headlines! If this was a black on black crime, it probably never would've made the news at all and most certainly wouldn't have ever been published on this site. I love Paris. Until you've been here or at least read the whole story, don't make racist comments about it. Otherwise, you will eventually lead up to all crimes of blacks against whites being referred to as hate crimes also. It would hurt us worse than the whites since it is much more common. Racist people of every color make it harder and harder every day to live as a nonracist member of society. We need to stand up as a society and stop seperating ourselves before we can ask anyone else to do the same. Why should anyone do for us what we're not willing to do for ourselves? I am a proud American, not just a proud black woman or proud African American! I've never been to Africa, and I don't want to either! I also did not vote for Obama just because he was black which many of my friends did - the same friends called the white people racist for voting for McCain. That's what we live through here. It goes both ways and all together is ridiculous. I was not born yet when segregation was mandatory. However it remains today, because of choice.

I hope Im not being too forward but your comment is bogus. Im not from country texas. Im from Florida where we dont play that shit. Most states in the south are different from Florida in the way they handle their race realtions. Yall need to be round there busting them crackers ass every time they look wrong. This is like the third incident in Paris, Texas in the last ten years where race was probably a major factor. Get the picture. It's 2009. Not 1909. White people are already naturally intimidated by blacks. Im embarrased to even be a young black man and read this story because I come from a line of strong blacks. Show some pride for your race and take action. Don't nobody want to hear shit. We want to see it. And if you think Im lying tell them crackers to bring that fuck shit to florida.

I agree Black or white no one deserves hit however to quote...2. I am from Texas and live in Georgia. No matter what you say Charlott, we have to many racist people getting away with murder. Something need to be done sooner then later. Your daughter didn't deserve to be hit by anyone, no matter who did it. But those racist {animals} killed a man and that is a big difference. end quote. It comes down to the fact if he gets away scott free with this what keeps him from doing it again or worse say killing someone and calling self defence against a racist that attacked him?
Reguardless of what the circumstances are when one human being assults another the law should prevail and not be afraid to call a crime a crime because of fear that some one will protest, there are two types of evil in this world 1 when a bad person does evil and 2 when evil is done and a good person sets back and does nothing.

As a grandparent I have learned to never say what someone else will say or do not even my children or wife. I can only speak for myself. I am from a small town in Texas and been to Paris aswell and you cannot tell me that there is not a problem in these small East Texas towns. I know for a fact that there are problems. When they get out of that "GOOD OLD BOY" way of thinking things may change but the problem is the older ones are still trying to carry on their way of thinking.
