Here's yet another interesting story to come out of the state of Mississippi. The state that just keeps on giving us great news content. Remember the "Cotton Picking Holiday" story from last week?
Well, now the mayor of a town is accused of doing something wrong. No, he didn't steal money or get caught on tape doing anything illegal. He supposedly is WRONG for leading a group of men to destroy an alleged crack house in the community. That may not seem like a big deal to you or me, but it is in Jackson, Miss. This is where Mayor Frank Melton is now on trial in federal court for violating the civil rights of the duplex's owner and tenant in 2006.
"This case is about government officials who took a sledgehammer to the Constitution, just as surely as they took it to Bubba's house," federal prosecutor Patricia Sumner said during opening arguments, referring to Evans Welch, who lived in the duplex.
But the funny thing about this case is that Melton really doesn't care. Melton, who has already been acquitted on state charges in the same incident, claims he was just keeping a campaign promise to root out crime in Mississippi's largest city. He does not deny damaging the home in August 2006. Melton has argued in court papers that drug dealers were bullying the tenant and using the site for drug distribution.
No matter what, Melton and his former bodyguard, Michael Recio, are facing three felony charges and a maximum 25-year sentence. Both have pleaded not guilty.
But, let me play devil's advocate for a moment. You have to admit that if you owned a home, you wouldn't want a public official coming in and destroying it no matter the reason. Of course, the other side of that argument is that it is time to get drugs out of black communities, period. Perhaps, having people come in a tear down these eyesores and havens for illegal crimes is a viable solution.
See the full story here.
It's now going to be up to a jury to decide, but what do you think?

Yes, we all know that there are laws protecting private property. But, what about the rights of the citizens as well? I think this Mayor did the right thing! It's high time that some good BM stood up to rid their communities of drugs! You eliminate the drugs then the guns and violence will follow. My question is "why" do we as a people continue to allow that kind of activity to continue in take place in our neighborhoods in the first place! Our kids, our mothers, wives, and grand parents are all exposed to that nonsense! When then are we going to get tired of the senseless deaths, and the random violence that aparently we have become "desensitized" to! What is wrong with our people, and why do we choose to live like this?

You could argue that a mayor has the right to tear down a crack house if it is on property that is owned by a city or municipality but when it's on privately owned property, certain procedures should be in place to ensure that the property owner is made aware of the situation and afforded an opportunity to respond one way or the other. If the property owner wasn't notified, then personal civil rights were violated. This mayor is known for "shooting first and asking questions later" and if he chooses to dance to that music then he must pay the piper.

With regrets,I have to agree with Cheryl due to the fact that rights have to be protected. If we start letting the "Government" do things with out due process,no matter how right that particular incident may feel. We as a race will be the first to feel the brunt of unfair tactics.

To Gerald: Respectfully, I must take issue with your comments, but yes I agree that their are laws, and that "due process" should not be abridged. But, try telling that to another BW that is looking at her young daughter/son laying face down in a pool of blood! Just, because some fools in their neighborhood got all caught up in the mix with a drug deal gone bad! How many more will it take to get everyone's attention to this death row mentality? Take a few minuets and think about some of those folks that "got sprung" on crack! And, just about everyone on these boards knows at least a few of them! I do. People that were once upstanding, now you couldn't recognize them even if you were in a room alone with them! Bottomline these are our neighborhoods, so we need to deal with them, not deal drugs in them! Where's our pride? Do we have any, or is that just more empty talk? If, we instead choose to only sit on our butts and continue to watch this self destruction like it's a movie on HBO....then we don't ever need to complain about anything! Ever again!

Listen to this, and this is just my opinion. When Obama began his campaign, he was speaking for all people across this nation, He asked for one thing from the people, and it was.... He can't do it all alone! He needs our help. The old African proverb, that is all so simple that people have gotten away from, which is, It takes a villiage! People are Idle to stand by and do nothing. Obama, is/was probably scared as hell! Your vote counted, stand up and open your mouths, be heard, and by Gods grace do your part. We all matter and can make a difference. That one time you thought you had an idea and let it pass, think longer and harder about what you can do in this life time to make a difference in someone's life. Please.....
Godspeed

It's about time people get their minds and their priorities together! Destroying a crack house is NOT a crime! It is an endangerment to the community, therefore the Mayor should have the inherit right to destroy it and all associated properties. Who ever heard of being prosecuted for destroying a crack house?! Utterly ridiculous!

I have lived in Jackson, MS. for 13 years. I voted for Frank Melton. I am ashamed that I voted for this vile person. This Mayor is a bully at best. He targeted this house because he knew that the crack using, schizophrenic that lived there was an easy target. http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/print.php?id=5957_0_41_0

I have family that lives in MS. and my understanding of former Mayor Melton is that he is a former police officer, who ran on the ticket to clean up Jackson. That is fine, but Mr. Melton went about it the wrong way. He looked at his election as an open door policy to run over the laws and rules of the land that everyone else has to follow. Mr. Melton should be prosecuted. Wrong is wrong. We as citizens need to be responsible and when we see wrong address it and call it wrong. Call the police on known drug activities in your neighborhood. Let the offenders know not in my neighborhood. It works.
