Here's what appeared in the New York Post Tuesday:
As the Chairman of the New York Post, I am ultimately responsible for what is printed in its pages. The buck stops with me. Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted. Over the past couple of days, I have spoken to a number of people and I now better understand the hurt this cartoon has caused. At the same time, I have had conversations with Post editors about the situation and I can assure you - without a doubt - that the only intent of that cartoon was to mock a badly written piece of legislation. It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such. We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our community. Source
Good for Murdoch. This is an effective and decent response to the situation. I am pleased to read that he has spoken with people who offered insight that he then considered. As I stated earlier, my biggest beef with the cartoon was that it was offensive given that a woman had just had her face and eyes chewed out and the history of the NYPD shooting unarmed people of color. I got the "Obama as chimp" implication, but I think that was unconscious on the writer's part -- not excusable necessarily, but I do not believe that was the intended message.
I do think the appearance of the cartoon and the response to it illustrates not only how different the prisms through which we see the world are, but that people of all colors would rather yell at each other than sit down over a beer and hash it out.
It's hashing time, folks.

I hope he rots in hell for this racist garbage. Does he really think that some lame apology with a tint of ignorance would get him a pass? White people have been doing this ish for years. They commit racial crimes and act like they didn't know it was racism, when in fact they are the mothers and fathers of racism. They created the stereotypes, so now they don't know their own product? Please! The only reason he thinks its a bad piece of legislation, in addition to it being written by a black man, is that rich people will have to pay their fair share in taxes and not ride on the backs of the middle class. Anyone that agrees with him is full of sh*t too and will join him rotting in hell.

Mr.Murdoch; I believe that his half hearted excuse was not enough and how in the world did he think that was right even if he did not agree with the bill their was a lot of ways to express it. I do believe he needs to do alot of soul searching..NO EXCUSE FOR LOUSY JOURNALISM.....

I agree. This apology is half hearted at best. Notice that he said FELT offended, not were offended. That is like someone saying. Im sorry IF I have offended you when in fact you told them you were offended. The fact is this, we did not feel offended, we were offended. Murdoch is in part saying that we are too sensitive. Shame on him!

Rupert Murdoch is an evil man with far too much control on our media. Please boycott his papers and other media stations and tell those that advertise on his networks that you will no longer support them if they continue to give their advertising dollars to those media outlets.
It is time to change the way we do business in this country and we shouldn't accept his lame apology.

I think the paper should be boycotted. How dare he come up with a lame excuse a week later and expect us (African Americans and any other supporter of our President) to fall for the banana in the tail pipe (Eddie Murphy in Beverly HIlls Cop).

PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE! KEEP THE PRESSURE ON! THIS GUY IS A RIGHT-WINGED RICH REPUBLICAN WHO HAS NO - ZERO EMPATHY FOR BLACK PEOPLE. HIS CONCERN IS HIS WRITTEN MEDIA EMPIRE AND ANY LOSSES HE WILL SUFFER. THAT IS IT!! LOOK AT HIS PICTURE! HE IS OLD ENOUGH AND WHITE ENOUGH TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE IMPLICATION WAS IN THAT SO-CALLED CARTOON! THIS MAN OWNS ALMOST EVERY IMPRINT OR EVERY PAPERBACK PUBLICATION ON THE SELF! DON'T BUY THEM OR HIS PAPER!!! DON'T YOU SEE THE RISE IN THE SHOOTINGS OF OUR PEOPLE SINCE PRESIDENT OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY? IT'S TIME TO GO BACK TO WHAT WE KNOW AND WHAT WE DID IN THE 60'S. HIT THEM IN THEIR WALLETS - THE ONLY THING THAT REALLY MATTERS TO THEM! IT'S EASY, JUST KEEP YOUR MONEY IN YOUR POCKET AND NOT THEIRS!
