Not that you'd be surprised by this Zimbabwe update, but while things go bad here stateside, they're getting worse for the onetime breadbasket of Africa. The BBC reports that since the unity government took over there, scores of white-owned farms have been raided and destroyed, and government officials have been willing participants in the melee. Now, on the surface this may seem like a case of street (or frontier) justice, where the indigenous population is simply "sticking it to the man."
But truth be told, the raids are doing far more harm than good to Zimbabwe, especially at this crucial time. In short, any troubled economy -- as we're finding out more each day -- needs to increase production of goods and services rather than harming it. In the case of the power share led by Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai -- who are facing a cholera epidemic, 231 million percent inflation (so bad that civic workers are demanding to be paid in U.S. dollars) and sporadic violence throughout the nation -- screwing up the means of production is driving a screwdriver through the back of the average Zimbabwean. ...
Remember the L.A. riots back in 1992? Well, for as much damage as there was, certain places didn't get touched. Because Ray-Ray and them, worked at the McDonald's down the street or at the auto shop down the way, those businesses came out unharmed, because people knew that those places were how folks paid their bills.
In Zimbabwe, when white-owned farms get raided that puts black Zimbabweans out of work and adds to the hungry multitudes in a country that already has a reported unemployment rate of 94 percent. It also stops domestic food production in a country that cannot afford to import from other nations.
Mugabe put his own people in a chokehold a long time ago when he became power mad and took everyone else to hell with him. Tsvangirai, in an attempt to gain power from him democratically, has been forced to share power to avoid more bloodshed.
Now, to make matters worse, the nation cannot even feed itself because it is destroying its own farms.
Mugabe has long claimed to give power back to black Zimbabweans through the militant ZANU-PF party, but he has shown that he is little more than a Idi Amin-style despot who is bent on holding on to power until he dies, even if it means destroying the nation he once liberated.
This situation sucks, but here's a suggestion and a quick (but not shameless) plug for giving: donate to AmeriCares. This is an organization that is defying the odds in getting aid to this nation, which is only a step from total collapse. AmeriCares also work in places like Darfur, Haiti, Myanmar and several others, and your kindness will go a long way.
I absolutely believe in people helping themselves and building their own infrastructures rather than relying on the teet of celebrity-driven pittances. But there are cases in this world where the only way people will survive is from outside help.

While Robert Mugabe has to shoulder much of the blame for Zimbabwe's present economic and social condition, the writer seems to have brought into the "hype" as regards to how we got "here" from "there."
Just a little history is in order: 1) After fighting a long guerrilla war against a savage racist regime, Mugabe's ZANU managed to bring the white racist regime to the brink of complete defeat, 2) Western and European nations (mainly the UK and the US) stepped in and brokered a cease fire and the handover of power to Zimbabwe's African majority, 3) As part of the peace and power transition agreement, Western and European nations pledged to provide the funds to purchase the property of displaced white farmers and also promised to invest heavily in the development of Zimbabwe's rich natural resources.
Then when the dust settled, in typical "forked tongue" fashion, Western and European nations flat out reneged on their pledge to provide the funds to purchase white-owned property and they reneged on their pledge to assist in development. The reason? Because they decided this would set a bad precedent for the many other parts of the world where whites/Europeans had stolen land and resources-- think the rest of Africa, America, Latin America, and Asia: the paybacks (reparations) would have bankrupted Europe and America.
And thus, Mugabe was left to his own devices: he had to find a way to get back stolen farm land, and find a way to do development-- while being boycotted by Western governments, banks, and corporations and while withstanding propaganda warfare by the world's white-owned medias. It was the same old white Western trick: Make sure to set "an example" (think Cuba) of what happens when a group of Third World revolutionaries take power-- "Either you do as we say, allow us to lie to you and rip you off, and let us keep the land and resources: or we will destroy you!"
This is the legacy of the West and its effect on developing nations. It's all about the economic hit men who say: "Give us your resources at terms favorable to us or we will either overthrow your government or cripple your economy." Mugabe wouldn't play ball, so his people are forced to pay the price, and Mugabe is made to shoulder the blame all by himself.
So Mugabe certainly has his shortcomings. But to ignore the hands-on role of America and Western Europe in the current situation in Zimbabwe is a distortion of the facts and merely parrots Western propaganda.

Long story short Zimbabwe would do better if a European country took it over. corruption seems to be a common thing with some African countries. When these leaders get elected or however they come into power taking care of the common people seem to be the last thing on their minds. Not always the case but it hurts to hear about the failures of a country so rich.

Nuu thanks for the real scoop .Mugabe makes it hard to see the UK and USA seem like the bad guy when you lock up your opposition and squander what little resources your country has.

It has been mention that the countries of Africa would unite under the "United States of Africa".
Has anyone heard anything about this?
If all their differences could be worked out...this united front could be an economic advantages for all the Countries of Africa.
Africa, with all of it natural resources should be the Economic Power House of the World.
I am hopeful that a change will come
