What do you think of the March 23 cover of New York Magazine? Have they created a flattering illustration of First Lady Michelle Obama, or a subtly racist makeover?
Everyone has an opinion about it. Here's one we found on Pixcetera.com:
"The image on the right was admittedly Photoshopped by New York magazine. Some people have found it disturbing that New York magazine paints Michelle to look more Caucasian. And who wears that shade of pink?
The credit deems it an "illustration." However, what's been changed on Mrs. Obama is a bit worrisome.
The makeup is overboard and almost garish. What is the point of this grossly demeaning cover image?
Do the editors want people to think a Michelle Obama Barbie is about to be released? If so, good job -- if not, why not just a photograph instead of this overdone distortion?

Practically every magazine picture of a celebrity that you see is digitally altered. This is a rule and has been written about extensively.
I don't know about you, but I can't see Michelle Obama choosing Fuscia lipstick. That odd alteration begs the obvious, overarching question: just who is deciding on how these photos are altered and what looks good?
From Wikipedia:
The growing popularity of image manipulation has raised concern as to whether it allows for unrealistic images to be portrayed to the public. In her article "On Photography" (1977), Susan Sontag discusses the objectivity, or lack thereof, in photography, concluding that "photographs, which fiddle with the scale of the world, themselves get reduced, blown up, cropped, retouched, doctored and tricked out"[11] A practice widely used in the magazine industry, the use of Photoshop on an already subjective photograph creates a constructed reality for the individual and it can become difficult to differentiate fact from fiction. With the potential to alter body image, debate continues as to whether manipulated images, particularly those in magazines, contribute to self-esteem issues in both men and women. New York Mag is a real art-icon mag, and this just looks like a classic Andy Warhol treatment. It's actually akin to being immortalized---in my opinion.
They featured alot of different artistic interpretations of our First Lady, it's great to see her immortalized. Come on, fine artists of this generation and every ethnicity, get to work.

The first picture of First Lady Obama is more beautiful than the second. On the second, only changes are her skin color and the lipstick and dress colors to match the lighter skin tone. The comparison proves having depth to skin tone is more beautiful. Recently, more Black female on air personalities have their skin tone lightened, and they look ghastly. It's taking away from the character of the depth of their true/natural beauty--Tyra is one. Andy Worhol-type immortalization or not, that artwork is unattractive. Immortalize her true image but why change perfection. Future generations should see her true skin tone. I've seen pure EBONY-toned beautiful people. Skin tone dosen't have to be almost white--unnaturally-to be beautiful. I think the naturally milky white, blue-eyed, blonded haired people are also beautiful. Beauty comes in all shades, just be natural. Don't improvise!

First Lady Obama is already so beautiful...why change her loos so drastically? Do they not like the fact that she is a beautiful brown skinned woman? I think it's ignorant and demeaning to our First Lady.

The make-up doesn't bother me BUT they did photoshop her image a bit too light for my taste. That was unnecessary. They could have done the same photoshop effect while staying true to her actual skin color.
Anywho, do you see how fierce her skin is in that original? She has such a beautiful complexion! I don't think I ever noticed it before.

She is not that attractive so they wanted to give her broader appeal. Lighter skin, whiter and larger eyes, whiter teeth, lighter hair and bigger bling. Seems the Lighter the better, according to New York Magazine.

I beg to differ with you on your comment concerning our First Lady's looks. She is as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside. I am so very proud of her looks as well as her intelligence. She has a classic look that will never go out of style, sort of like Jackie Kennedy, i.e., the chisled facial features, even skin tone, lovely hair, eyebrows plus eyelashes and the prettiest teeth that I have seen lately. Lighten up people! Let's give the Presidential family a break and constantly pray for them as they are our nation's First Black Family, whether you like it or not.

I happen to think Michelle Obama is beautiful, especially her skin color. I am a light skinned black female and would love to have her coloring. If I were her, I would make them change the color back to its original because light is not beautiful.

BlackSpin: You’re way off base. I don’t see anything wrong with the picture on the right. Everyone, including Michelle Obama could use some help every now and then when it comes to fashion and makeup, and there is nothing wrong with that shade of pink lipstick. And please, Michelle could hardly pass for ’Caucasian.' It's an airbrushed picture, and that spells 'Perfecto'. Who do you know that hasn’t been airbrushed for a magazine cover???
Stop trying to create issues when there is none.
