During his first visit to our most populous state as president, Barack Obama took a chance going on 'Late Night with Jay Leno,' which draws 5 million viewers every evening.
And while Obama's appearance displayed great comic timing in delivering several funny jokes as well as serious analysis of the nation's current economic woes, the president could find himself in a little hot water for an offhand remark about the Special Olympics, the athletic competition for the mentally and physically challenged. ...
The joke drew chuckles from the studio audience, but it will surely draw rebuke from those who believe Obama was making fun of Special Olympics participants.
Representatives of the competition have a point. It isn't cool for the president to even playfully make that statement in front of such a mammoth audience. The White House put out a statement before the taping even aired, insisting that the president didn't intend to make fun of the games' participants.
Anyone with an ounce of sense knows Obama's intention was not to make fun of the physically challenged but to make fun of himself. But that's the risk one takes when trying to be funny in front of an audience. We've all seen it before at family gatherings, office parties and the like.
This will all probably work out to the benefit of the Special Olympics in the long run. Obama obviously has a very busy schedule, right? How much would you like to bet he will find time to be at the opening ceremony for the next major Special Olympics event? And I wouldn't be surprised if you see our president cutting a public service announcement for the charity sometime soon that will likely be viewed by an audience far larger than Jay Leno's.
Don't be surprised if Obama's little late-night gaffe turns out to be a nice pick-me-up for the Special Olympics and its supporters.

President Obama wasn't making any fun of the Special Olympics. President Obama was making fun of himself. I hope that the media doesn't drag this out and make it a BIG DEAL! People that are offended shouldn't be and should MOVE ON! It was good that he was on Jay Leno. This was his way of getting across to America, in this kind of setting.

President Obama in light of former President Bush's several public gaffoos is a diamond shining in the light. His comment was not offensive to anyone it only brought light to his inability to bowl. He is "physically challenged" in that area and made reference to it...bottom line, end of story.

So far so good. Obama surpasses Clinton for being the King of Teflon. What he said appeared to be in "good humor", however, if say I don't know a certain George Bush or John McCain or any other Republican for that matter had made such a statement, they would have been fried by the media. The economy would have been taken off the front pages, AIG bonuses would have been a distant memory. President Cool and any democrat gets Disneyland "E" ticket passes. Let's be real!

OH PLEASE your President whom you elected opened his big mouth and made a horrible comment on those who are mentally or physcially handicapped and I AS A WHITE WOMAN AM OFFENDED! I am sick of the whining on blacks part whenever they think something is said about them as being a racist remark but let the President do it and you think it is okay. WELL IT IS NOT, he offended the Special Olympics and all who are part of this organization and I FOR ONE DEMAND A PUBLIC APLOGY TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY just like that lunatic al sharpton opens his big mouth to try and stir up trouble between blacks and whites. This racism on black people's part is getting out of control. Your racism will not be tolerated. Marlene

OH PLEASE, Marlene!
President Obama didn't mean to offend anyone who is mentally or physically challenge. You are IGNORANT and DISRESPECTFUL by saying he OPENED HIS BIG MOUTH! You also IGNORANT and DISRESPECTFUL talking about BLACK PEOPLE! President Obama was talking about himself! How in the HELL can you say as a WHITE WOMAN you are offended? I didn't know that people who are mentally or physically challenge are ALL WHITE! SHUT UP! President Obama doesn't need to do a DAMN THING by apologizing to the public! The day after, the White House said that President Obama didn't mean to offend the Special Olympics, IDIOT! That's more than ENOUGH!
You sound real CrAzY! You need to go back to SCHOOL to learn on how to SPELL and brush up on your GRAMMAR! WHO THE HELL ARE YOU to say that racism will not be tolerated? There are lots of Civil Rights Activists & Coalitions around this country not just Rev. Al Sharpton. If Rev. Al Sharpton wants to speak, he has ever RIGHT TO! YOU ARE NOT GOD, YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL of what PRESIDENT OBAMA or any BLACK person has to say because you took it the wrong way, and is having a PISSY FIT! Racism exists and you are one PROVEN EXAMPLE of it! I AM OFFENDED by you making STUPID IGNORANT COMMENTS and calling black people RACISTS! There will always be the Conservatives, the Republicans, or whomever trying to pick President Obama apart and bring him down! It will never HAPPEN!
GET OVER IT AND GET USE TO IT!

hi marlene, i thank you for your open and honest statements. i desire more people to be real as you and not hide behind the dogma of social phobias. i am a black man who believes in unity and anything that is a device to seperate us even more is not needed. i dont know for sure if that is your intention as to build unity or destroy it even more but i desire a more forgiving and understanding of why people do critisize. whether to tear down or to build up...we are still building this nation on a social level for all races and if your building on that then we are still the foundation of liberty..help me to continue to build this nation by building solutions then to destroy what took years to build up to this point...our united states of many colars! thank you for reading and be healthy, thomas

Marlene - the last time I checked he was the President of the United States, whereby if you live in the good ole USA, means he is YOUR President too. And as a WHITE WOMAN myself, I know exactly the way he meant the comment and trust me it was not to make fun of the Special Olympics, but of himself, because his forte is definitely on the basketball court and not the bowling alley and he knows it. Where is your sense of humor? Lighten Up!
