Obama on Health Care and Energy - Weekly Address

President Obama declared in this week's weekly address that he has gotten off to a good start on health care reform and an alternative-energy policy.

On the energy side, Obama praised House leaders for bringing utilities, environmental advocate and unions to the negotiation table. The president said this was the first step to ending American dependence on foreign oil. It's hard to tell at this point since little has been agreed upon, but I hope he is right.

As far as health care reform is concerned, Obama met with insurance company representatives, drug company managers and health care specialists to figure out how to curb increasing health care costs.

It's only a first step in what will prove to be a very long road of negotiations.

If this type of bargaining were easy, it would have happened long ago. And Obama must be given credit for taking on the type of challenge that our last president wouldn't even put on his agenda.
