Paulo Serodio was born and raised in Mozambique. He is a naturalized citizen who has been attending medical school here in the United States. According to a lawsuit filed by Serodio, he was subjected to harassment and ultimately suspended unfairly once he began to define himself as a white African American.Filed last week in U.S. District Court in New Jersey, the lawsuit traces a series of events that Serodio maintains led to his 2007 suspension from school, starting with a March 2006 cultural exercise in a clinical skills course taught by Dr. Kathy Ann Duncan, in which each student was asked to define themselves for a discussion on culture and medicine.
After Serodio labeled himself as a white African American, another student said she was offended by his comments and that his white skin prevented him from defining himself as an African American.
According to the lawsuit, Serodio was summoned to Duncan's office where he was instructed "never to define himself as an African American because it was offensive to others and to people of color for him to do so."
"It's crazy," Serodio's attorney, Gregg Zeff, told ABCNews.com. "Because that's what he is."
Serodio, who lives in Newark, N.J., said he never meant to offend anyone and that calling himself African American is meant to be disrespectful to any one else's cultural heritage. Source: ABC News 'White African American' Sues Med School
I do not see the problem with Serodio defining himself as an African American; he even added the "white" racial descriptor for specificity.
The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines African American as "an American of African and especially of black African descent."
"There are people of all races who are African," Serodio said, adding that he's never had a problem identifying himself as an African American until that day in Duncan's class.
[Serodio also stated] "I wouldn't wish this to my worst enemy. I'm not exaggerating. This has destroyed my life, my career." Source: ABC News 'White African American' Sues Med School
Like everyone else, Paulo Serodio has the right to call himself whatever he wants. Why is it anyone else's business? Why would anyone else care?

Well to be honest, he's truly African American. You can't call a Black person born in AMERICA an African American. Yes their ancestry is from Africa but truly their American. He's what people should refer to as African American because HE'S FROM AFRICA!

You are so right, I have been saying this when they came up with African American. The Africans do not consider the Blacks in American as true Africans, because we are so mix with just about all other nationals. So this person regradless of color he is an African American.

I am black, but I do not consider myself African-American because I was born here in the USA and so were my ancestors. I just consider myself black and I honestly see nothing wrong with the way that he has chosen to identify his self. There are many white people and asian people, who now reside in some countries in Africa and where born there. Honestly, if he was born in African and then moved to the United States, then he really is an African-American.

Thank you Jai, your comment is absolutely correct. I've never conformed to the idealogy of african american. For that matter, caucasians should be referred to as european americans, but you'll never hear or see that written anywhere.

Wake up and realize ; unless you were born in Africa.you are not african american. You are an American of African descent.I wonder what our naacp is saying about this civil right.

So Jai, a Mexican born in America claims Mexican-American, by your understanding this is wrong? I think your statement is wrong, but that's me. I applaud you for reading the article though.

No, if that Mexican American wants to claim that title then that's his/her business. But if this guy is claiming to be African American, and was born in Africa, and is being harrassed because of his demands (which are reasonable to me) then I think it's wrong.
And what do you mean you applaud me for reading the article?

I agree with Paulo S. He is a white Africian Americian if he was born of Caucusian parents, in a country in Africia and now lives in USA and has been naturalize by this country then what else is he?? He is a "White African Americian!! I'm not offended by truth!! I'm considered an Africian American. Both of my parents a considered that although, their immediate ancestors are Native Americans, Caucasicians, and Original Aficians. From this mixture I'm considered a medium reddish brown Negro or Africian-Americian with Native American and Caucasician features. I personally prefer to be catogorize as of the Child of GOD-Black-Native American Race. That's my preference. Paulo, has a right to his. No Matter what,we are all of the Human Race!!

Hey welcome to America. Where things are defined by others and not you. I wonder how black folks feel, especially the ones who were born in America and has never seen Africa?
