The other night on the MTV Movie Awards, the rapper Eminem faced off with someone's bare behind. He also faced one of the most embarrassing experiences of his entire career. In a moment that has rocked the blogosphere, the rapper had another man's "significant body parts" pressed to his face by Sasha Baron Cohen (of Borat fame). The event captivated the entire world, and led to Eminem storming out of the show.
No one knows exactly what happened. But the stunt appears to have been choreographed, although it is not clear as to whether or not all parties were in on the joke. What is known is that there are some serious PR issues for Eminem, and major publicity implications for both MTV and Sasha Baron Cohen's new film. MTV gets a ratings bonanza. Creating the biggest TV moment of the last 10 years will have next year's audience on the edge of their seats waiting for the next shocking debacle. Cohen's movie is also going to sell a boat load of tickets. But what about Eminem? He may end up spending most of the revenue from his next album paying a therapist to help him get over the trauma of his experience.
Eminem was an easy target for this one. He is regularly accused of homophobia, and has made his career by embarrassing other celebrites. It seems only natural that someone would literally make him the butt of the biggest joke in America. But there is the deeper question: Did Eminem deserve this? Also, what does this do to the financial value of the Eminem brand on the brink of his album release?
"Eminem was humiliated in front of a large audience," said Dr. Alicia Taylor-Mclaughlin, Assistant Professor of Social Work at St. Francis University. "He was probably already quite insecure after having been out of the game for so long and having so many enemies in the celebrity world to begin with."
The truth is that these may have been hip hop chickens coming home to roost for Eminem, a man who has suffered through depression, drug addiction and has more issues than Time Magazine. There is also the "rep" factor in hip hop, laced with the hyper-masculinity that leads to tremendous intolerance for homosexuality. Getting punked by a gay character on national TV is not exactly good for your street cred.
One will never know if Eminem handled the situation correctly. He could have laughed it off and stayed for the rest of the show. At the same time, it might actually help his reputation that his body guards punched Cohen a few times and left the building. What about his album sales?
"I don't think this will hurt his album sales at all," said Tarin Donatien, a New York Publicist and founder of The Donatien Group. "But if I were his publicist, I would have released a statement by now."

Based on what I've heard from my friends in the industry, I don't believe that Eminem was in on the joke. There isn't an actor on earth who could make his neck stretch as far as Eminem's did to get away from Sasha's bare booty. But Eminem has been begging for this moment for years, by consistently degrading the gay community, other celebrities and perhaps even himself.

If it was deliberate, there is a reason MTV chose Eminem for this stunt. Any fan of Eminem's knows that he is not a psychologically healthy human being. In fact, the talented rapper got his career started by writing a song called "Just the Two of Us," in which he kills the mother of his child and then drives with his daughter to throw her mother's body into the river. Given Eminem's psychological challenges, the brains behind the MTV move likely knew the rapper would go off and have a reaction that is TV-worthy in an age of ADD television viewers. Eminem's flow is "sick", but unfortunately, his mind appears to be sick as well. I also can't help but wonder if this was a stealth political statement being made by an ambitious MTV producer, against the backdrop of gay marriage debates. A PR beat down of America's biggest homophobe is likely to win big props in the gay community.
Eminem's brand will probably rebound from this incident, and his albums will still sell like greasy chicken at a fat farm. But the truth is that MTV should have let Eminem know what was going on, since you "just can't do a brother like that." At the same time, Eminem needs MTV more than they need him, so he is probably just going to have sit there and "take it" - no pun intended.

MTV is run by Freemasons! This was an attack in a masonic ritual use of a Nazi angel on one of the icons that represents the hiphop community! A subculture that has taken a stand against political corruption since day one!! Hiphop fans wake up! Then they set it up so Wayne glorifies the acting industry! This is an attack on hiphop!!!!!! Eminem was not in on it! And what eminem does is use political satire and freedom of speech what mtv did was set a presidence infront of the new generation which sexually assaults hiphop!! It re-educates the new generation and discredits hiphop!! MTV is Masonic fuk that Nazi angel falling on him!

I honestly think that if they wanted to get back at Eminem, they should have made a video making fun of him etc... To physically touch and invade someone's space is something that he has not done, and I do not think that he deserved to have it done. There is a very thin line between joking and a personal attack. Which, he crosses often, but there was no need to go as far as MTV did. I am not really a major fan of Eminem, but he deserves the respect of space like everyone else does.
Namaste,
Lion

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing. Eminem's in a pretty fragile state at the moment, recently kicking drugs and obviously filled with anxiety about his return to hip hop. If you watch his live tv appearances from the past month, he seems extremely anxious, and unable to crack jokes like he used to. You can just see the far on his face. And now this happens, just as he's getting back into the game.
On the other had, he's been dishing it out like this for years. The stuff he says about Mariah and Nick Cannon for one, and on the new album there is even a song about kidnapping and murdering Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. And there's a comment about shoving a flashlight up Kim Kardashian's a**. So, while I feel bad for him and I worry he's going to back to drugs, he set himself for this.

Let's be clear - Eminem was NOT the person to do this to. This guy is crazy and he might really have some serious psychological issues over this. I wouldn't be surprised if he went home that night, got high and even thought about killing himself. Also, embarrassing Dr. Dre's money machine on national TV should make MTV open for a lawsuit. But then again, he should understand that this stuff comes with the territory.

We need to realize that Eminem was NOT the person they should have done this to. He is already crazy and probably went home and got high all night to avoid his depression. This was bad taste on their part.

I am no real big fan of Eminem's. This man sold records bashing his own mother and ex-wife and most of the people he rips or either females or the gay community. So, if you can dish the disrepect, humiliation and meanness to others, then you got to be man enough to accept it when people go in on you. I do agree, I think he could be at a fragile state in his life right now, but some of the people he has gone hard on has had to deal w/the overwhelming and maybe for some humiliating way he's attacked them. He's a grown man. All I can say is get over it! You reap what you sow. Laugh at yourself some and keep it moving!

Cohen wouldn't have tried this with Fifty Cent or any other real rapper from the streets. This was a target that he knew he could use and walk away with all his teeth in tact. I always believed that Eminem was a manufactured product of the music industry akin to old-school Vanilla-Ice or a modern day Elvis giving white kids a white face for an expression of black culture.
Cohen on the other hand is a phenomenon to me. Others find him funny but I have yet to see what amuses the masses. He's about as funny as a dead puppy. He's like Regis Philman-What did this man do or who to stay in show business? The characters are offensive and his promotional picture of him holding a black child just seems a little over the top for my taste.
In the end, I should hope that the man playing Eminem does not relapse into an endless stupor caused by drugs and he find a vocation more suited for someone like himself, and given time Cohen will offend the great masses much like Wanda Sykes, and Roseane did. Its coming.
