There has been a tremendous amount of controversy over 'The Princess and the Frog,' Disney's first animated feature to star a black princess in its 70-year history of princess-making. From her name (changed from Maddy to Tiana), to her racially-ambiguous prince, it seems that no one is satisfied. The Root is adding a totally new nuance to this heap of discontent. , asks the poignant question: Who needs a black princess anyway? She questions the value of "princess" ideals, preferring to give young women a dose of reality to counteract this fantasy.

does acknowledge that a gorgeous black icon can help blossoming women of all races better appreciate African American beauty. But Fields seems to miss the fact that enjoying a fun childhood builds inner security, allowing one to courageously face adult responsibilities. The beautiful feelings created by fantasies also build tenderness of heart, so one can retain humanity while dealing with life's cruelties.
The Web site's author is too focused on impressing kids in mental infancy with the harsh nature of reality before they are ready. I can understand her not wanting girls to believe the "princess" way is an adult mentality, but why take away the sacred joy of childhood when you are actually a child?
There is much value in a black princess, even one as incredibly controversial as Princess Tiana is proving to be.

Kids don't see things in black or white, they are such fabulous HUMANS that they see everyone as equal no matter what color until adults TEACH them otherwise. Who cares if she is Black or Asian, or Hispanic? Diversity is good and what our world is made up of. When will we ever learn?

agree with "gator". My teenaged kids attend a predominately white school but have black friends and just don't see in "black and white" like our previous generation. Hoping it continues to be less and less of an issue.

I Think that having an African American princess will make a difference in our economy because young african american girls may need a role model. The ones we have today are influencing them to do bad things to themselves and others. It will change the way some people look at African Americans and let them know that we may be a minority but we can also be powerful (take Barack obama for an example)

I really think people should stop with the Black, Brown, Yellow or White thing. We are all people and we all share the same Earth. If you just have to have something worry about start with getting something to eat for those that have nothing and stop worrying about what color their skin is.

Gator...so what you're saying essentially is that people who don't see any difference between races have the minds of children? I agree with you.
