Two years ago, to the horror of some fans, it even killed off a character: Lisa Moore, who died after a long bout with breast cancer. Meanwhile, its cast of characters has jumped twice in time, to early adulthood and then to their mid-40's (their current age).
Batiuk decided that when Lisa Moore's widower, Les, moved on, it would be with a black woman named Cayla. The ghost of Lisa even pops up to give Les the thumbs-up on the union, when Cayla admits to being a Woody Allen fan. Later on, the two middle-aged single parents steal a moonlit lip lock in the car. It's been subject to some mild Internet chatter, but it's not exactly the smooch seen 'round the world when Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura kissed on Star Trek in 1968. I guess that fact that this storyline is so yawn-producing is actually a sign of progress.
Don't get me wrong, I know some folks still get exercised when they see black and white together. I know it personally as a black woman married to a white man, although the occasional cross-eyed looks that we receive now are a far cry from the ostracism and unveiled hostility I received back in the '80s if I was seen dating outside of my race.
And intense animosity no longer sends people to the polls to keep persons of different races from getting hitched. If you really want to push buttons, I'm thinking gay marriage is the topic to take on (something Doonesbury took on a decade ago). In fact, gay marriage advocates are actually using the landmark case that legalized interracial marriage in every state, Loving vs. Virginia, to bolster their case -- under the notion that the same kinds of religion-based arguments that were made against interracial marriage are now being made against gay marriage.
For me, the case for gay matrimony is a lot simpler: the people who want it are motivated by love; marriage is a stabilizing force in society that forces participants to act more responsibly; and the sanctity of the marriage vows I took before God are in no way affected by vows taken by someone else. To me it just makes sense.
Meanwhile, I look forward to the day when Les and Cayla attend a gay wedding, and everyone yawns.

Great post! I'm a soc major and we just discussed intermarriage and the Loving vs. Virginia verdict.
We now have a president who is the product of intermarriage hopefully that inspires more dialogue and understanding.

What a lovely post. I love your stance on gay marriage (right there with you!), and yes, definitely happy about the yawn-producing affect of interracial marriage these days. To think how outraged people would have been about it thirty years ago is to cringe. Love is love. The sooner the world recognizes that, the better off the world will be.

Gpowell, we also have a president who said during the campaign "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."
Now, of course, gay rights activists didn't get up in arms about this because, frankly, they knew he was just saying what he thought he had to to get elected (ironic, isn't it, that a politician can disingenuously say he's against gay marriage for his own personal benefit and folks give him a pass, but if a pageant contestant says it out of deep-rooted, sincere beliefs, she's Public Enemy #1).

Regardless, if we have friends who could fill the position better. It obviously doesn't take much to find a political personage with those traits.

Where did Obama say he was a Muslim? When? Got a link? Time to put up or shut up.

When we see as many white male-black female couples, then we can say no one really cares any more. Right now I would guess at least 95% of interracial couples are a black male and a white female. Your case and this one in the comics are still a rarity.

Actually,Jim,maybe you should look at the pictures right above these comments. It seems that there are as many white man/black woman couples as the other way around. Also, you should probably worry about your own relationship--if you have one.

Jim,
You are absolutely right and the U.S. Census Bureau supports what you have pointed out-as if the whole world does not know. You can clearly see it!!! White (and non-black)male-Black female marraiges are not reciprocal and in proportion to the extremely elevated numbers of black men marrying white and other non-white women. Until there is balance and equity among interracial marraiges across the board they will merely be tolerated but not truly accepted in the heart - which is especially true and applicable when it comes to the trendy "in style" marraiges i.e. white men-asian women, black men-white,non-black, or light-skinned women.

I absolutely love Funky Winkerbean. I was happy to see Les and Cayla hook up. What's the big deal about Interracial Romance anyway? I have lived thru the entire Civil Rights movement and it made me mad as Hell. Why can'twe all just get along? I mean put the past in the past and move on. I have nothing against any race, color, religion, or sexual orientation. Live your life how you want, just don't cram your belief's down my throat. It's ok to express yourself, but don't tell me how you've been discriminated against....EVERYONE has suffered some kind of discriminationat some time.
As for Tom Batiuk's Funky Winkerbean, thank you for a job well done! I love the topics you cover and look forward to reading you every day!
