Two years ago, to the horror of some fans, it even killed off a character: Lisa Moore, who died after a long bout with breast cancer. Meanwhile, its cast of characters has jumped twice in time, to early adulthood and then to their mid-40's (their current age).
Batiuk decided that when Lisa Moore's widower, Les, moved on, it would be with a black woman named Cayla. The ghost of Lisa even pops up to give Les the thumbs-up on the union, when Cayla admits to being a Woody Allen fan. Later on, the two middle-aged single parents steal a moonlit lip lock in the car. It's been subject to some mild Internet chatter, but it's not exactly the smooch seen 'round the world when Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura kissed on Star Trek in 1968. I guess that fact that this storyline is so yawn-producing is actually a sign of progress.
Don't get me wrong, I know some folks still get exercised when they see black and white together. I know it personally as a black woman married to a white man, although the occasional cross-eyed looks that we receive now are a far cry from the ostracism and unveiled hostility I received back in the '80s if I was seen dating outside of my race.
And intense animosity no longer sends people to the polls to keep persons of different races from getting hitched. If you really want to push buttons, I'm thinking gay marriage is the topic to take on (something Doonesbury took on a decade ago). In fact, gay marriage advocates are actually using the landmark case that legalized interracial marriage in every state, Loving vs. Virginia, to bolster their case -- under the notion that the same kinds of religion-based arguments that were made against interracial marriage are now being made against gay marriage.
For me, the case for gay matrimony is a lot simpler: the people who want it are motivated by love; marriage is a stabilizing force in society that forces participants to act more responsibly; and the sanctity of the marriage vows I took before God are in no way affected by vows taken by someone else. To me it just makes sense.
Meanwhile, I look forward to the day when Les and Cayla attend a gay wedding, and everyone yawns.

I agree completely. If more than 35% of all marriages lasted, maybe the homophobics would have something to crow about. But between wedding in Las Vegas and divorce in Mexico, marriage isn't nearly as "sacred" as it was 100 years ago. And, since marriage is simply a contract between two people to consolidate their lives into a single unit, what difference does it make that they be any gender at all?

I found it ironic that she liked Woody Allen
flicks which are mostly set in NYC but have no black characters. I liked some of his work too but found the absence of black folks odd.

I like the piece on interracial couples, and am happy to see a few of my own myths proven false in some of these pics of IR celebrity couples.
I had no idea that "Mr. Big" of Sex and the City was married to a sista! Justin Chambers' wife is your average everyday looking black woman and he's hot. Again there, I am pleasantly surprised and proven wrong.
However, Cuba Gooding and Taye's wives - typical mufugly white chicks that I believe most BM are drawn to because that's the best they can get. Ice T's wife is the definition of trash, and he still thinks he's a pimp, so that's fitting. Same with the white boys that the celebrity BW are with. Ugh. Typical -- least desired.
Seal lucked up with Heidi. That's just rare, period. Even Tiger couldn't do better than a nanny. Yes, she's a cute blonde, but at the bottom prior to marrying him. Seal's catch - a multimillionare, sexy white supermodel? Rare.

It would have been nice to read about interracial couples without having to read about nasty faggots inserting their agenda and once again linking their disgusting same sex hormones with being black.

I hear you! I get tired of them comparing their lifestyle to being black! Get you own lines and stop riding on the coat tails of our struggle.

just how are these two related?
biracial relationships exist between partners of one or more groups with discermable inherited traits generally defined along the bounds of racial grouping;
homosexuality is something someone chooses to do, like picking a movie at a video store or car off a lot--in this instance, sleep with their own sex;
that is not based upon any set of inheritable traits loosely defined by race, any more than smoking or drinking or doping, nor is it any more natural;
at least the addict has the rationalisation of addiction to fall back upon to cloud the fact that they did this to themselves;

I hate to start a gay/straight war on a topic predominantly about race, but the people who back the 'being gay as a choice' argument have obviously never taken the time to do their research. Or speak to a gay person as if they didn't have the plague. Being gay isn't like 'picking a movie from the shelf'. It's like being a closet super-opera singer like Susan Boyle, or being allergic to cherries. Your body and your psyche are pre-disposed to certain things. Parts of it you can change, and parts of it you can't. I admit, some people use the label of being 'gay' to be promiscuous and live unhealthy lifestyles, but there are people of both genders who will do that, regardless of their persuasion. I am a straight woman married to a straight man in a monogamous relationship, but I can still make the effort to understand the lifestyles of others, instead of just judging them with the information I hear in the supermarket.

When I learned about racial prejudice(in school), I was shocked. I ran straight home to ask my best friend if she knew, since she was black. I had never concieved of the idea of judging someone by their skin. It seemed to me that you might as well say that blondes are better than redheads. Since then, I've had my heart broken again when I brought my gay friend to our family easter party and one of my most respected and accepting relatives was scandalized because he was a homosexual. I hope that soon, everyone will forget the differences between us that are so unimportant.
